Just saw this movie tonight... Thought is was worthy of a thread simply because it was one of the few movies this year that I found myself carrying around in my head afterwards.

No sympathetic characters - no one to cheer for. Digs deep into the selfishness of relationships and sexuality, and props this selfishness up as a value at times. Dysfunction can be hot.

Not a fan of Julia Roberts, but wow. Fearless and unexpected from an actress that makes millions from crowd apeasing performances.

Watched many people in the theater leave because they were hoping for a Jude Law/ Julia Roberts romantic comedy. Anyone else enjoy being challenged with this?

I liked it. I thought it gives a realistic look at love. Kind of depressing in a way though. I walked out of it feeling like there's no point in getting into a relationship anymore....like that it's great at first, but chances are that it will just end with everyone getting hurt. I think it's making a lot of people feel that way.

Oh, and Natalie Portman looks AMAZING in it.

I actually found every character sympathetic. Every one had flaws that I could recognize.

SPOILERS

I remember being really surprised when Clive Owen's character comes back from America and confesses to having had an affair with a hooker, then gets all wacky when Roberts confesses she's back with Law. In anybody's else's hands, Owen's would have been set up as the naive, innocent guy we're supposed to feel really bad for. But the film handled it like reality. Nobody's really clean in these kinds of relationships.

END SPOILERS

And oh yeah, big ups to Natalie Portman. She's PHAT*. I've always had a thing for chicks with strange hair colours.

*Pretty Hot And Tempting.

I saw the stage play a few years back and hated it. All the characters were of course hate-filled pricks and none of them were at all likeable. However, my dislike mayhave had more to do with the shitty actors in the production I saw (especially Larry).

I hope to check out the movie this week, mostly because I like to watch both Law and Owen, great actors. As for Portman and Roberts...meh. Good thing they're hot.

Hey MasterShake, you may want to use the "Spoiler Tag" to hide stuff like that next time.

IE: Spoiler: This way you can hide plot points

I also enjoyed this movie... I think I need to see it again to understand the characters a bit more. I felt Jude Law's character was the one I was feeling sorry for. He was as flawed and brutal as the other three, just so happened everyone came out ahead accept him... I think I would have enjoyed it more if it would have ended with all 4 apart, and all alone.. (if that makes any sense)
Also, for some reason I loved the simpleness of Natalie Portman's explanation as to why she left the U.S., and then that being the very same reason for returning.

Saw it last night, really enjoyed it.

Breaks down the mix-up and emotions of lust/love, sex and emotion real well. And ended on a good note, not some happy everythings worked out, but a 'here's the reality of things' type of ending.

Well done.

Ok, there's one thing, and one thing only, I need to know about this movie: does Natalie Portman, at any point, take it off?

Saw this movie last night..wow, very intense emotionally and sexually. I did like that the big named starts were evenly matched. I liked it.

OK... I need a bit of an explanation. My take on the ending is that she was once again playing games with Dan (Jude Law) with the whole name thing, that she wasnt clean in the relationship either. But I dont really get the last scene, of her walking down the street... Whats it mean? Whats the significance? The director didnt just put it in there so we could gawk at how hot Natalie Portman is, it has a reason, but I cant figure it out. Any help?

First, i loved, loved, loved the movie . . . it was realistic, people are intense and i think it reflected that.

I think the significance of having her walk down the street at the end was to show that she was still intact as an individual and happy with herself . . . that she could live her life and walk on her own . . . that is my take on it. I don't think it was meant to be a complex scene . . . the whole film was realstic and simplistic . . . i think the ending reflected that feeling IMHO.

And and ya, totally sad she didn't take it all off . . . Natalie is . . . whew! . . . she is hands down the hottest actress ever

That and maybe a nice return back to the beginning of things. Kind of a "things went around full circle".

Yeah, I think Ill accept that ending.

I still cant quit thinking about this movie... Ive heard people complain that there was no good guy, no one to root for, but I think in this case, thats a plus, not a negative. And the acting... Whoa. As big of a fan of Ms. Portman as I am, I must say, Clive Owen completely stole the show. Incredible performance. Of course, it probably doesnt hurt that he was in the original play performance, playing Jude Law's character actually.

I really want to see this one again. I still think that the online chat scene tried to be shocking just for the sake of being shocking, but the rest of it... Incredible stuff.
