Poems in Movies/TV shows
plenty of them. which one gave you the strongest impression? which one made the movie more memorable? which one was so good that you had to look it up after the movie?
for me, one of them would be \"funeral blues\" by w. h. auden, used in the movie \"four weddings and a funeral\". a very touching and emotional piece indeed: Funeral Blues W. H. Auden Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead, Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for ever; I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now: put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun; Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood, For nothing now can ever come to any good. |

Fire and Ice
-Robert Frost Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. I hadn't actually heard this one spoken aloud until, of all things, they recited the first stanza in a commercial on the Sci-fi channel for Firestarter:Rekindled. But I was hooked on it from that point on. There was just something about hearing it aloud that triggered a big emotional response that I still don't understand. |

I had heard of 'In Flanders Fields' a long time back, but when I heard it again last night on t.v. and saw this thread today, I went looking for it and its origin on Google.
(I'm not sure if I saw it in Mr. Holland's Opus or on a tv show) Quote:

The movie was really bad, Dangerous Minds, with Michelle Pfeiffer, but one of the scenes had her as the teacher comparing a song of Bob Dylan to that of Dylan Thomas. (I am drawing a blank on the Dylan song right now) It was interesting. I have always loved this poem
DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT Dylan Thomas Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Kirsten Dunst has some interesting quotes from poems in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Can't remember off the top of my head though.
And of course Walt Whitman in "Dead Poet's Society"

I also like this little piece a lot, from an episode of \"Sex and the City\". Credit goes to the writers of the show. It is a very touching piece for a wedding, short and sweet:
His hello was the end of her endings Her laugh was their first step down the aisle His hand would be hers to hold forever His forever was as simple as her smile He said she was what was missing She said instantly she knew She was a question to be answered And his answer was \"I do\" |
