Top 12 Gangster Movies
I pulled this off Fark, but here's the link (http://www.askmen.com/toys/mrtech_60...h_gadgets.html), and the basic list in a nutshell.
1) The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990) 2) Goodfellas (1990) 3) Miller's Crossing (1990) 4) Scarface (1983) 5) White Heat (1949) 6) A Bronx Tale (1993) 7) The Public Enemy (1931) 8) Donnie Brasco (1997) 9) Bugsy (1991) 10) Casinos (1995) 11) Once Upon a Time in America (1984) 12) The Untouchables (1987) Any thoughts? It looks like a Joe Pesci filmography, almost.

I've seen several of those on the list and I agree for the most part. I would add Road to Perdition and move The Untouchables up a little.
Couple of movies there that I need to watch though

I love Miller's Crossing, but I'll agree it is a bit slower than the others. I'd like to see Sexy Beast on that list. Ben Kingsley is the most frightening 5'2" 110 lb man on the planet in that movie. But if you are keeping with American gangsters your list is pretty damn good.
I don't know if you could classify either of these as gangster movies but, True Romance and Leon:The Professional are a couple of great twists on the genre. "I'm the anti-christ. You tell the angels up in heaven you never saw evil so personified as you did in the man that killed you." Christopher Walken in True Romance There's a great early role by James Gondolfini in it too. He delivers a hell of a monologue about the first time he ever killed somebody.

lock stock and two smoking barrels was good, is that a gangster movie per se?

while its not a movie per se, I think The Sopranos (especially the first two seasons) should be required watching with regard to cinematic treatments of the "American Gangster" genre.
The first episode of season two is as good as it gets, IMHO.

On the 'Non-Italian' gang front, how about movies like "American Me" and "Blood in, Blood out" for the hispanic side of things?
BTW, the only thing I would really change on the original list is to swap Bugsy with The untouchables. <sarcasm> Oh, and how come nobody has mentioned Sly's great ode to Organized Crime, "Oscar" </sarcasm>

Road to Perdition was a good gangster-esque movie, but I found it hard to watch, as Tom Hanks dosnt make that well of a gangster, a gangster that kills lots and lots of people.... just me.

What about Blood Simple? I know the Coen Brothers already got a shout in with Miller's Crossing, but Blood Simple is one of the best "criminal related" movies of all time.
IMHO that is. I also agree that Sexy Beast should be up there. And the original Get Carter was simply superb. Did anyone else see the excellent Terrence Stamp in The Limey? I love that movie! Mr Mephisto |
