Top 12 Gangster Movies
I pulled this off Fark, but here's the link (http://www.askmen.com/toys/mrtech_60...h_gadgets.html), and the basic list in a nutshell.
1) The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990) 2) Goodfellas (1990) 3) Miller's Crossing (1990) 4) Scarface (1983) 5) White Heat (1949) 6) A Bronx Tale (1993) 7) The Public Enemy (1931) 8) Donnie Brasco (1997) 9) Bugsy (1991) 10) Casinos (1995) 11) Once Upon a Time in America (1984) 12) The Untouchables (1987) Any thoughts? It looks like a Joe Pesci filmography, almost. |
Well I havn't seen most of those movies but there are a number on there I want to see. All I will say is I am pretty sure they ment casino not casinos

So leave the gun. Take the canoli. |
That should be Godfather Trilogy minus #2 :)
|
what??? only Italian Gangs???
What about Black Rain (yakuza) A Better Tomorrow (triad) A Better Tomorrow 2 (triad) Colors (crips and bloods) New Jack City (urban) Warriors (urban) |
<I>'forseti-6
That should be Godfather Trilogy minus #2 </I> HAving jsut watched teh godfather trilogy with my friends over 3 nights i gotta go with that as my #1 set of gangster films... and yes.. unlike forseti i'd include #2 BUT take out about the first hour of #3.... |
I'll get flamed for saying this but Road to Perdition needs to be on that list!
|

You meant minus #3 right? Parts I & II are classics, part III is pure crap. Incest what the hell is that all about, and nepotism Sofia Coppolla cannot act. |

I agree, road to perdition had a very gang-related deal goin on...
|
I've seen several of those on the list and I agree for the most part. I would add Road to Perdition and move The Untouchables up a little.
Couple of movies there that I need to watch though :) |
They don't have "The Roaring 20s" on that list. Or even any other Bogart movies. They need to see more old classic gangster flics.
|
warrrreagl youve pretty much summed it up for me.
A couple of ones that made me laugh were Analyze This and Mickey Blue Eyes |
i absolutly hated the god father movies the only gangster movie i cared for was scarface.
|
One of my ooooold favorites....
Angels with Dirty Faces Bogart, Cagney, And the Dead End Kids |
I like the Coen Bros but I found "Millers Crossing" as boring as bat shit!!
|
I love Miller's Crossing, but I'll agree it is a bit slower than the others. I'd like to see Sexy Beast on that list. Ben Kingsley is the most frightening 5'2" 110 lb man on the planet in that movie. But if you are keeping with American gangsters your list is pretty damn good.
I don't know if you could classify either of these as gangster movies but, True Romance and Leon:The Professional are a couple of great twists on the genre. "I'm the anti-christ. You tell the angels up in heaven you never saw evil so personified as you did in the man that killed you." Christopher Walken in True Romance There's a great early role by James Gondolfini in it too. He delivers a hell of a monologue about the first time he ever killed somebody. |
ok this is a streach but isn't boondock saints a gangster movie? lol
|
lock stock and two smoking barrels was good, is that a gangster movie per se?
|
Yes British Gangster.
Like: Get Carter The Krays Snatch (ish) The Italian Job (ish too) Gangster No. 1 etc etc |
while its not a movie per se, I think The Sopranos (especially the first two seasons) should be required watching with regard to cinematic treatments of the "American Gangster" genre.
The first episode of season two is as good as it gets, IMHO. |
Two more oldies:
Little Caesar (1931) with Edward G. Robinson White Heat (1949) with James Cagney |
On the 'Non-Italian' gang front, how about movies like "American Me" and "Blood in, Blood out" for the hispanic side of things?
BTW, the only thing I would really change on the original list is to swap Bugsy with The untouchables. <sarcasm> Oh, and how come nobody has mentioned Sly's great ode to Organized Crime, "Oscar" </sarcasm> |
Gangster No 1
and my Fav asian movie all time, Friend def check that one out |
Road to Perdition was a good gangster-esque movie, but I found it hard to watch, as Tom Hanks dosnt make that well of a gangster, a gangster that kills lots and lots of people.... just me.
|
From that list I've only seen Scarface and some bits of the Godfather trilogy so far. Man, I have a lot to catch up to :s

How about the Freshman ?
|
the freshman was a good one but it didnt push out the gangster feel as much as others do
|
i liked road to perdition, don't know if it belongs on the list because sadly i haven't seen a lot of those...but i support goodfellas, casino, and especially scarface.
|
What about Blood Simple? I know the Coen Brothers already got a shout in with Miller's Crossing, but Blood Simple is one of the best "criminal related" movies of all time.
IMHO that is. I also agree that Sexy Beast should be up there. And the original Get Carter was simply superb. Did anyone else see the excellent Terrence Stamp in The Limey? I love that movie! Mr Mephisto |
Just change it to TOP 5 MAFIA MOVIES that's what the list is.

BLASPHEMY! Part II is arguably the best one. Or did you mean minus number 3? 'Cause if you you didn't....:D |
