Your Favorite Scene/Moment in a Novel...
Inspired by the Recommend A Good Book thread.
Simply put, state what your favorite moment/ Scene from a good novel. Moments that were either thought provoking, comedic, inspiring, or mabey even life altering... "what ever floats your boat" as they say - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Green Mile - by Stephen King Set up - The prision guards Brutus Howell and Paul Edgecomb are trying to scare their fellow prison guard Percy Wetmore from trying to cause more trouble... Paul trys the subtle approach but then Brutal restates what Paul means but in his own way - "Straight Out" Brutal - "If you rat us out, most likely we'll take an ass fucking. And if we do, we'll find you. If we have to go all the way to Russia, we'll find you. And we'll fuck you, in every hole you own. And we'll pour vinegar in parts that are bleeding..." OUCH! the imagery and intimidation there is just too much! |

"The Two-Bear Mambo" by Joe R. Lansdale.
The first two pages. Hap Collins, drives to see his friend Leonard Pine on X-mas eve. When he hears sirens, he realizes that Leonard is busy burning down the crack-house next door for the THIRD time. When he gets there, he realizes it's true, with Leonard standing in front of the burning building "like a Honky's nightmare". In the meantime, Leonard's boyfriend is standing on the porch, screaming. Crack-dealer ass-whooping ensues.

Favorite scene! Arrgh! They're all so good.
Best I can do is to refer to my entries on "Recommend a Good Book" and cheat by saying that, the reasons that I recommended Zelazney was because every scene in Lord of Light is my favorite. Honest to god, the whole book is about powerful scenes. That's how it's written. Dune only has a couple that rate: The post Gom Jabbar scene ("No, they tried and died."), Alia bantering with the Emperor. The opening Essay and the very last scene in Small Gods. Last scene in Watership Down always brings a tear to my eye. There are a half dozen or so masterclass scenes throughout the Vlad Taltos books. OK, I've well overrun my mandate. Sorry.

Umberto Eco's Foucaults Pendulum, about half way through the book. The protagonist, Jacobo Belbo is having a conversation with his girl friend in which she warns him about playing with peoples beliefs. She says (I'm paraphrasing) " Be careful Jacobo. People are so desperate to believe in something, that once you start them you can't take it back and say you were kidding."
I read the book years ago, but I still remember how much sense that made to me then and today. |
