I can't believe no one mentioned:
Green acres is the place for me. Farm livin' is the life for me. Land spreadin' out so far and wide. Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside. New York is where I'd rather stay. I get allergic smelling hay. I just adore a penthouse view. Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue. ...The chores. ...The stores. ...Fresh air. ...Times Square You are my wife. Good bye, city life. Green Acres we are there.

while i think knight rider is one of the coolest, another theme caught my attention because of it's brilliant expository function.
renegade. lorenzo lamas motorcycles his way to foil plots of many a pastier-skinned villian. unfortunately i don't have a link for this musical gem (renegade fansites seem to be dead for some reason!) but imagine a gravely voiced man uttering the following words: "He was a cop, and good at his job. But then he committed the ultimate sin, and testified against other cops gone bad. Cops who tried to kill him, but got the woman he loved instead. Framed for murder, now he prowls the badlands. An outlaw hunting outlaws, a bounty hunter, a RENEGADE! " i'll admit this raises more questions than it answers, and sounds like it was written by a fourth grader. but he's a renegade. he makes his own rules and looks damn good doing it. ok, i admit i've never seen this show. but those are words from the actual theme song. this song ranks right up there with stan bush's "the touch" from transformers: the movie. covered by dirk diggler in boogie nights, "the touch" offers wholly unprecedented self-assurance. (not techincally a tv theme, but certainly entertaining) |

Wow, most of my favorites are already here.
The Munsters The Incredible Hulk (the closing theme, mainly) Get Smart Galaxy High School (just watched a tape of this the other day. The Eagles' Don Felder composed the opening theme) Spider-Man (60's version, not so much the 90's one) Cartoons used to have great opening themes. If you watch Fox toons lately, there isn't one out of the bunch that isn't a crime against humanity.

Have to agree with the frist post M*A*S*H and the theme song is Suicide is Painless.
Through Early morning fog I see Visions of the things to be The pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see (chorus) That Suicide is Painless It brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please Try to find a way to make All our little joys relate Without that ever present hate But now I know that it's too late And (chorus) The game of life is hard to play I'm going to lose it anyway The losing card I'll someday lay So this is all I have to say That (chorus) The only way to win is cheat And lay it down before I'm beat And to another give a seat For that's the only painless feat 'Cause (chorus) The sword of time will pierce our skins It doesn't hurt when it begins But as it works it's way on in The pain grow stronger watch it grin For (chorus) A brave man once requested me To answer questions that are key Is it to be or not to be And I replied "Oh why ask me." Cause (chorus) And you can do the same thing if you please for the rest i would have to say Transformers G.I. Joe Las Vegas Evangelion (import anime) Theme from Macgyver.

Of course, it should be said that the words were only used in the movie version, and were never part of the TV theme song. (Probably too depressing).

Well I'm not the kind to kiss and tell
but I've been seen with Farrah I've never been with anything less than a nine, so fine I've been on fire with Sally Field Gone fast with a girl named Bo But somehow they did not end up as mine. It's a death defyin' life I lead I take my chances I die for a livin' in the movies and TV But the hardest thing I ever do Is watch my leadin' ladies Kiss some other guy while I'm bandagin' my knee I might fall from a tall building I might roll a brand new car 'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that made Redford such a star. I never spend much time in school But I taught ladies plenty. It's true I hire my body out for pay, Hey Hey I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs blown up for Raquel Welch. But when I end up in the hay it's only hay, Hey Hey. I might jump an open drawbridge Or Tarzan from a vine 'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that makes Eastwood look so fine.
Who'd'a thunk it? Lee Majors could sing. Sort of.

Hate to be a party pooper but are we just listing our favorite tv shows, or the shows we grew up with now? Seems they'd be the themes we remember/like the best; i.e. for me it's macgyver/murder she wrote as they were on together when i was a kid. nowadays i geek it out with ds9 being my favorite star trek theme...and stargate sg-1's is cool too. all the old school disney cartoons...haha ducktales, woo-ooo. the late-80's sitcoms like cheers, cosby show, growing pains, night court, etc i can all remember too. ah the good ole' days...now everyone just uses the pop song of the month.

There's a new show called Rescue Me that has an AWSOME theme song!
C'mon C'mon Lyrics by The Von Bondies url=http://www.warnerreprise.com/asx/vb_cmoncmona_128-a.asx On another day c'mon c'mon With these ropes I tied can we do no wrong Now we grieve cause now is gone Things were good when we were young With my teeth locked down I can see the blood Of a thousand men who have come and gone Now we grieve cause now is gone Things were good when we were young Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon) Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon) Will I ever learn? (c'mon c'mon) (c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon) As I make my way c'mon c'mon These better nights that seem too long Now we grieve cause now is gone Things were good when we were young With my teeth locked down I can see the blood Of a thousand men who have come and gone Now we grieve cause now is gone Things were good when we were young Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon) Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon) Will I never learn? (c'mon c'mon) (c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon) Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon) Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon) Will I never learn? (c'mon c'mon) (c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon) And know this day these deepened wounds don't heal so fast Can't hear me croon of a million lies that speak no truth Of a time gone by that now is through |

I love the Firefly opening song:
Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand. I don't care, I'm still free, You can't take the sky from me. Take me out into the black, Tell them I ain't coming back. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me. There's no place I can be, Since I found Serenity. But you can't take the sky from me. Absolutely awesome, and it captures the feel of the show exactly. Understandable, really, seeing as the song was written before any real work began on the show |

Spiderman (60s version)... a groovy classic
Angel... moving and moody Gilligan's Island... gives a perfect plot synopsis in a catchy tune. Barretta... you can't go wrong with Sammy Davis Jr. singing The Sparrow (Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, no... Don't do it!)

Cheers was the first one to pop into my head. I also loved the Animaniacs one.
Also, the theme to Sanford and Son. It was so groovy and catchy.
