Jaws has that ability to stay with you. Years later I was swimming in a lake somewhere and out of the blue I started thinking abt sharks freaked me out. I think it depends on the mood your in when you see it. I have seen a couple that weren't that scary but I sure had nightmares that night.

Hm, I think I'd have to say Ringu and Ring2. But I saw them both in the theater, and that's always scarier. The american version scared me because I can't believe anybody could ruin a film so effectively.
For everybody who's saying the Excorcist, you should really see Excorcist, you should try Excorcist 3. Excorcist 2 was possibly one of the worst films ever made, but 3 makes my top ten horror films every year.
Um, I guess I would rate Evil Dead 2 higher than Army Of Darkness, just because AoD was funnier than it was scary.
The Legend of Hell House used to creep the shit out of me when I was a kid, but I was a kid, so who knows. I can't seem to find it on video.
I still get kind of freaked out by Planet of the Vampires and Cannibal Holocaust. Those films with random madness and no explanation appeal to me.

Aside from the usual suspects (Exorcist, Jaws, etc.) I found that these movies creeped me out pretty good.

The Blair Witch Project : I thought the movie itself was only semi-creepy, but it just so happened that I went deer hunting the very next day. I really don't scare easily, but sitting in a treestand, in pitch blackness at 4 am, I started to think about that movie and was absolutely TERRIFIED. If I didn't have a flashlight I probably would've gone insane waiting for the sun to come up.

Signs : Once again I only found this movie semi-creepy, but once I got home and had to sleep at night, my imagination made the concept of aliens invading my house a little too real. Especially since I live in a rural area.

Alien vs. Predator 2 : This is the scariest game EVER. Turn off the lights, slap on some headphones and play that Marine campaign. Probably the only game that's ever truly startled me while playing.

But yeah, playing as marine will have you crapping your pants.
Another scary game is Silent Hill .

Prince of Darkness definitely has my vote for scariest. In the Mouth of Madness was pretty scary too. But then again, I really like John Carpenter movies.

While the film itself was marginally scary, I found the isolation aspect of Event Horizon to be very frightening.

The first Halloween was very scary to me. Donald Pleasance definitely helped set the creepy factor on high in that one. I don't care much for any of the other films. Your standard rip em up fare (the Friday the 13th series, the Nightmare on Elm Street series) bore the hell out of me (Jason X was laughable). Most of them are far too predictable.

I dont get scared at movies as a general rule. They just piss me off. Why dont they just pick up a big stick and belt the crap out of the bad guy. Sometimes they do. They have the bad guy down and vulnerable. The smart thing would be to keep going untill all fear and adrenalin has been played out. But noooo. They drop the big stick and run away like a lunatic. Just stupid.

A few years ago when Blair witch came out I went to see the midnight session. It freaked me out so much that I had goose bumps on my arms for 2 hours after the movie. That was the first time I had ever been scared by a movie.

A couple of years ago they brought the Exorsist out at the movies again. I had never seen it but heard some pretty good stuff so I went to check it out. It freaked me out heaps. It was such a good movie.

I found "The Omen" to be the scariest. Not a lot of blood and guts. I look the horror movies are based on religion.

In no particular order:

Poltergeist. I saw it in the theaters with my older sister and dad when I was 13 or 14. Seriously screwed me up for a long time. I picked up the DVD last Halloween and it's still scarier than most of the crap that passes for horror these days.

The Shining. Jack Nicholson + Stephen King + Stanley Kubrick. What more do I need to say?

Exorcist 1 and 3. Both great. I found 3 scarier.

If you're a zombie fan, check out Della Morte Della More (spelling may be wrong). It was released in america as Cemetary Man. It's more artsy than scary, but worth watching.

Alien scared the hell out me as a kid. I remember seeing that at the drive in. It was freaky becuase you never saw it. No one had ever seen the alien before. Not until the end. And then when you finally saw it, it was mean as hell looking! The original Halloween was scary. Before all the sequels. At least you think the kids have a chance. That maybe Michael Myers is human and can be killed or at least they can get away.

The Ring is the scariest thing I've seen in awhile. It's the only thing on screen that's made me jump since this one episode of the X-Files when I was 8 or so. Especially the part at the end when that fucking girl crawls out of the tv and fucking transports 10 feet forward. And that one girl's face, the girl from the beginning, remember? Fucked up.
Loved it, though.

Blair Witch Project: Got my father to go with me to see it when it was in limited release, before all the hype. First time in my life I couldn't sleep because of a movie.

Audition: Maybe not horror, but definatly one of the darkest and most disturbing movies I've sad through. To this day just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable.

Session 9: Underrated little film that is chilling at times.

poltergiest- could not have any "snowy" tv's on anywhere in the house (ok, so I was 6)

a trilogy of terror- that little doll freaked me out, and still does...

Event horizon- never freaked me out, just way too much loud noises and flash- not enough substance, or maybe it just did not get to me.

Candyman was a great movie. It has some really scary moments.
But the scariest movie for me of all time is Gremblins. I saw the original when I was little and it gave me nightmares for days.

Event Horizon was a great movie, and it did freak me out like few movies have.

Also, does anyone agree most "horror" movies today are just gore-filled-body-count-films with nothing scary at all in them really? Most of the scary movies that freak you out are the Supense movies. Signs was the last scary movie I've seen but the ending left me with mixed emotions.

Here are two new additions to the list of Rings and Shinings.

1. Jacob's Ladder
2. 28 Days Later

Lots of blood and guts in 28 Days, but it works because it's subordinate to something scarier. The implications of that film keep me up at night.

I'm also surprised no one listed Jacob's Ladder. Makes the hair on my neck stand up just thinking about it. It's been a few years since I've seen it and I don't think I'll see it again.

The scene when the girlfriend is repeatedly asking Tim Robbins 'is anybody home', each time she asks the camera does an immediate zoom on her face which begins to look more and more like a demon with each zoom. But it happens so fast you barely notice. Yikes.

I have to add Requiem For a Dream, I know it isn't a scary movie, but it seriously gave me that freaked out feeling when the movie was over. And you have to love that 1 song they play over and over in the movie, does anyone know what its called?

If you can suspend your disbelief long enough to watch St. Francisville Experiment, I highly recommend it. I thought it was a real documentary when I first saw it, and it scared the bejeebus outta me. It does seem to get just plain silly after watching it once though.

I'm sorry to say I havnt seen of the classic's like "the exorcist" and "the shinning", so "The Ring" would be the scariest movie I've seen to date.

The first horror movie I ever watched was the first Nightmare on Elm Street. I watched it on a Friday nite on HBO when the babysitter was over, and she only let me and my brother watch it if we promised not to tell my parents she let us. FREAKIN' SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!!!!
