I have googled this many many times, in my mind it is one of the most interesting films I have ever seen. There are TONS of sites that have explanations and almost are all different and similar in their own way. I think the best thing is to google "Donnie Darko Explanation" or Donnie Darko FAQ" OR another cool thing is to hit up the official site and try to get into all the seceret links and stuff, there is a huge amount of information on the official site if you take the time to look for it. But in my opinion, I think the movie is to be interpreted the way you see it, there is no one simple explanation.

Has anyone actually been to the official site, because I went there and I was only able to go so far...? I've tried multiple times, but I just can't get any farther!

I think it leaves you with so many questions because Richard Kelly, the director, wasn't able to put a clear vision on the screen.
By the way, in the DVD commentary Kelly says that he meant for Donnie Darko to be a kind of superhero. Jake Gyllenhaal mentions that you could interpret a large part of the movie as being in Donnie's head, but Kelly makes a point at saying that he didn't mean for any of it to be imagined. I liked the movie, but Kelly really didn't get the vision he wanted across to the audience. That's why there's so many interpretations because the movie's kind of a mess. Still, it's entertaining. |

that is so sad, sadatx....
that's why i hate (and love) being an artist. nobody REALLY interperets the piece as the artist creates it.

I agree it's difficult to convey your vision to your audience (I'm a writer, or I should say trying to be, so I know this too well). And some would say that the artists vision doesn't matter (Roland Barthes, "Death of the Author" and all that). What matters is how we interpret the art. Of course, this applies to someone like Shakespeare. We can't really go on ask him what his true intentions are. However, most great artists certainly know how to convey their ideas to their audiences. That's what makes them great. Hitchcock knew how to lead his audience and make them feel what he wanted them to feel during his movies (well his good one's anyway). Last edited by sadatx; 02-20-2004 at 05:09 PM.. |
