So Johnny Mnemonic or The Matrix?

Of course I'm talking about the very first Matrix. I remember when I first saw it I thought it reminded me of Mnemonic a lot. And I don't know why, and I think I'll prolly be the only one to ever say this but, I think I like it better than the first Matrix. I guess I just like the characters more like the badass dude with the thumb, the Jesus freak android, Ice-T and his organization too. I just thought it was a really great movie. I guess I am kind of torn and I haven't entirely convinced myself I like one over the other I guess I'd have to watch both back to back in order to decide for certain which I prefer. Some would say The Matrix has the better plot of the two but they're both very intelligent and scientific movies. Perhaps Matrix is better because it's an epic that includes 4 films all together and because of that I guess you can't really seperate them into 1's, 2's, etc. because really it's all 1 story that won't fit on 1 video. So I guess I'll say help me make up my mind. By no means are either of them crappy movies I don't care what anyone says so is it really all a preference?

Well, I agree that Johny Mnemonic wasn't so bad... but it is nowhere near as quality of a movie as the Matrix. The Matrix was revolutionary in film style and is all together a better story and movie.

Thats only because it was made a different time with better graphics and a better budget. Most of what attracted fans to the first matrix was all the graphics and special effects which to me are cheap. Fun for one watch and not again. Then you had the technical plot of the whole movie which gets lost in all of that...the world being taken over by machines and Neo being the one who will save them all. So yeah the story was good but if you took out all of the flying across buildings and dodging bullets it would be in the same quality of movie as Johnny Mnemonic. Johnny Mnemonic was made much earlier and the technology was not as good but the whole story behind it was pretty facinating as well. Sure now when you watch it it may not be as impressive but the movie was made in 1995 a whole 4 years before The Matrix and a couple of advances in computer technology came around that could smoothin out the older graphics and make them look more realistic eh? Well you pose a good point but if ya don't argue it ya don't know how good it really is so thats why I'm here.

Maybe if you had been asking about one of Gibson's novels I might have had to think longer. But in this case its as simple as choosing the movie that doesnt suck.

I'll have to go with rogue on this one... Mnemonic was groundbreaking because of the subject matter... Matrix was groundbreaking because of the whole.

Johnny Mnemonic was TERRIBLE, with an incredibly thin plot, that holds up to no level of scrutiny what-so-ever.

Is the movie Johnny Mnemonic based on Gibson's novel?

I've never seen that film, but Gibson's fiction is very good.

I find the Matrix a little trite. Actually, whilst I liked the first movie (kind of...), I haven't even bothered with renting the second.

Yes actually it is from William Gibson. Most movies based on books aren't nearly as good as the books themselves so having read the book I don't think the actual movie would do you justice you'd probably hate it like everyone else seems to do. I looked on Rotten Tomatoes.com and found nothing but bad reviews about the movie saying it's a "Blade Runner Knockoff" and "Just a remake of Tron". I think most of those people are just assholes who think a little too much rather than just enjoying the fuckin movie. Like Christopher Null's review for example

The main problem with Johnny Mnemonic (as if I hadn't listed enough already) is the plot: the bad guys are trying to get Johnny's head in order to extract the information. What's the point of a human courier if you can get the info out just by chopping his head off? Maybe a portable hard drive would be cheaper next time.
This guys obviously trying to sound fuckin smart cause what he said has no logic to it all what a psuedo he thinks obtaining a portable hard drive is harder than a persons head? It's obvious why they chose to place the information inside of a persons head rather than a disk. I mean the information was on a disk in the begining of the movie and they would have had it easily if they hadn't burned it. Johnny got away though...with the information. What a tool.

For those who have asked, Johnny Mnemonic is a novella that is collected in Gibsons book, Burning Chrome. Well worth reading.

Johnny Mnemonic is a better Story than the Matrix, marginally. They cut so much of the good stuff from the book to make the movie on a budget.

The Matrix, on the other hand is 50 to 100 times the film that Mnemonic is. It is coherent, surprising, and innovative. So much is missing from Mnemonic's story that the plot is dumbed down to trivialities. Further, comparing the grand vison of the book to the patchwork of the movie cannot but be to the movie's detriment. THey did a better job than Lynch did with Dune, but not by much, and, of course, Keanu phoned it in on Mnemonic, but showed up in person for the Matrix. Neither was he called upon to play a smart guy in the Matrix, and, lets face it, though he has about the breadth to his acting ability, Woody Allen he ain't. Joe Pantoliano would have made the better choice for Mnemonic; he can do Shrewd, at least.

Actually it was me. It's not so much a vote for Johnny Mnemonic so much as a vote against the Matrix. Don't get me wrong I liked the matrix... I just think it's over-rated.

AND funny you should ask... I think Johnny Mnemonic is under-rated. So Vola! -My vote.

I saw Johnny Mnemonic in the theatre and fell asleep. When I saw the Matrix for the first time on DVD I fell asleep. I just realized that I fell asleep to two Keanu Reeves sci-fi movies, which wouldn't be that strange except I NEVER fall asleep for any other movie. I honestly think it is a Keanu Reeves thing. Maybe his screen presence doesn't exactly grip me.

Wasn't Henry Rollins in Johnny Mnemonic?

Yeah he was. He played a doctor. Did a fairly decent job too. Ice-T is also in the movie, and Dolph Lundren, and other peoples. So the counts up to 4 now I never would've expected 2 much less 4 but i guess the other 2 are just people who don't like the Matrix and not necessarily people who liked Mnemonic. Oh well.

the Matrix was impressive visually when first viewed in the theatre (and especially before the Max Payne bullet time look was beat to death in cheap copies), but still not enough overall to win my vote. Also have not seen the Matrix sequel and have zero desire to. Can say the same for the last or the upcoming Lord of the Rings films.
