I thought the guy that looked similar to The Mandarin in the movie was actually Mandarin? He had a huge freaking ring on the entire movie so I figured he was already on his quest to get all 10.

I thought that when I saw the ring to, but Obediah is not the type to leave lose ends behind. More likely he was just a high ranking lieutenant and the ring was a symbol of rank. Mandarin got all ten pretty much at the same time when he found the space ship he made them from.

Building the Real Iron Man
04.09.2008 at 11:11 am
by Gregory Mone

Abstract: "While audiences flood theaters this month to see the comic-book-inspired Iron Man, a real-life mad genius toils in a secret mountain lab to make the mechanical superhuman more than just a fantasy with the XOS Exoskeleton"

Utah. A secret mountain lab. Software engineer Rex Jameson backs into a headless metal suit that's hanging from a steel I-beam by a thick rubber cord. He clicks into the aluminum boots, tightens belts across his legs and waist, and slides his arms through backpack-like straps, gripping handles where hands would be. It looks as easy as slipping into an overcoat.

Then he moves, and the machine comes to life, shadowing his every motion. He raises his fists and starts firing sharp jabs while bouncing from one foot to the other. He's not quite Muhammad Ali, but he's wearing 150 pounds and he looks light.

He could easily knock a nearby coder to the floor, or fling one over a desk—but even more impressive, he could do it all day. To show off his superhuman endurance, he walks over to a weight rack and yanks down a bar loaded with 200 pounds. Then he does it again. And again. He stops somewhere around 50, but he's been known to rip through 500 reps in a row. Even then, he quits out of boredom, not fatigue.

It's fantasy versus reality, and the spread is shrinking. The latter, the XOS, is the latest and arguably most advanced exoskeleton in existence, developed by one-man idea factory Steve Jacobsen and the engineers at Sarcos, a robotics company he started in 1983 that was recently purchased by the defense giant Raytheon. The flame-throwing monster? That's the star of the superhero blockbuster Iron Man, due out May 2. The film follows a prolific inventor named Tony Stark who builds a robotic suit of armor that grants him fantastical abilities. Iron Man has been thriving in comics for more than four decades, but this is Hollywood's first go at the story. And the timing couldn't be better. Not only is Iron Man—a hero born of pure engineering—the perfect idol for our gadget-obsessed era, but for the first time since the character appeared, the suit is more than just an illustrated dream.

In the past seven years, a handful of engineers have taken the military's 40-year-old fantasy of mechanically enhanced soldiers that can carry heavy loads and begun to make it real. Funded with millions from the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), Jacobsen and others have finally begun marrying artificial muscles and control systems into suits that could soon be available to soldiers, firemen and the wheelchair-bound. There are still serious challenges—powering these wearable robots, for one—but Sarcos's XOS, the most capable full-body suit, one that moves seamlessly with its wearer, has even the comic's creators feeling like the real world is catching up to their vision. After Adi Granov, one of the main illustrators of the comic and a consultant to the film, watched a clip of the suit in action, he was startled. "I knew that's where we were heading, but I didn't realize we were this close," Granov says. Aside from the lack of flight and weapons, he adds, "that's Iron Man."
Check out video of the XOS in action here, and for a brief photo history of the man-made exoskeleton, see our gallery here. Continue reading this feature below.

This cannot be serious.

In other news, Army scientists are close to cracking the super soldier serum, and scientists are at a loss to explain how a leaking fission reactor granted the power of flight to nine individuals.

aberkok 05-08-2008 05:26 AM

I saw it again last night, and while watching the credits, I noticed that the solo piano piece Obadiah was playing (you know, at the beginning of the pizza scene) was composed by Salieri. Nice touch!

Charlatan 05-08-2008 02:25 PM

That *is* a nice touch.

Hain 05-08-2008 02:32 PM

Guess the movie lines

Dude... where do you get your weed?

RetroGunslinger 05-08-2008 03:03 PM

I actually read about that exo-suit in a magazine--I'm pretty sure it was Pop Science, actually--and it actually looks pretty cool and, after a few years of testing and alterations, feasible.

Hain 05-11-2008 12:42 AM

It was a 4 hour train ride- with a connecting train delay of little more than 2 minutes- to the nearest city that was playing it in English. Then two subways later, I watched it. Waited all the way to the very end of the movie. I had to run to the subways, and run to the train station and made it to my train with only four minutes to spare.

Movie was so fucking worth it.

Martian 05-11-2008 10:55 PM

So I finally saw this damn thing. I went into the theatre thinking that after all of the hype I'd been hearing and my own dreams of how awesome it was going to be, there was no way this movie could live up to my expectations, but somehow it did.

I diligently avoided spoilers leading up to viewing the film, without ever realizing that, having read the comics, I'd already have a broad idea of the plot going in.

My only question is why they felt it necessary to make Jarvis a computer. Maybe they felt he'd compete with Pepper for screen time or something?

Ah, well. Bring on Cap and the Avengers!

Bruce Vain 05-20-2008 08:06 AM

One of the best comic-book movies made to date. Go see it if you haven't already.

Abstract: "According to reports, Favreau directed the first Iron Man for a very modest fee, and was looking for a slight bump in his fee for the sequel film. However, despite the financial success of Iron Man, Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel is apparently unwilling to pay a higher fee to Favreau. Reportedly, the studio believes the film will be a success whether or not Favreau is involved."   click to show

Iron Man 2 may end up being Iron Man vs. the Incredible Hulk, summer 2010. Still, I'd much prefer if Favreau directed. He really created the perfect popcorn movie.

Hain 06-10-2008 11:40 AM

Let's put more emphasis on "perfect," Will.

KellyC 06-10-2008 10:11 PM

It should be more like the entire Avengers Team vs the Hulk, Will. Have you seen the cartoon? Even then he kicked all their asses, and then some. The Hulk much badassery for Iron Man to handle alone.

Edit: I am outrage reading the news.

Destrox 06-11-2008 03:17 AM

Hain you have made me sad :(

I wish I had not read those articles.

speshul-k 06-11-2008 06:13 AM

That really is a shame if Jon won't be directing Iron Man 2. It was one of the few Marvel films that actually worked in the super hero context.

Ugh.

I read World War Hulk. Believe me, they could explain any Marvel sueperhero(s) fighting the Hulk. Still, it's a good idea to establish the Marvel Universe instead of just Hulk Universe. Spiderman, the X-Men, Iron Man and Hulk all exist in the same world. Crossing them over make sense.

Hain 06-11-2008 07:49 AM

@ Destrox: Why do you think I posted them? It is an outrage. Favreau made a an amazing movie! Marvel should be throwing him money and buying women that lick his toes--- if... if he is into that.

Oh yeah, I remember that...it's ridiculous sometimes.

From what I've heard, Marvel Studios is planning an Avengers movie, so their trying to keep the heroes in the same universe.

blktour 06-11-2008 02:49 PM

anyone watch the jay leno interview a while back? ( May 5th I think.) well Robert downing Jr was on there, and he stated his "big headednes" and reiterated it with his attitude. it just rubbed me the wrong way.

ill wait for it to come out on DVD.

RUMORS!!! HURRAY!

Quote:

Abstract: "We told you earlier that there seemed to be some conflict between Marvel Studios and Iron Man director Jon Favreau over whether or not the director would be returning to helm Iron Man 2 ... those rumors are just that - rumors, and an offer has been put on the table to Favreau by Marvel ... the offer is definitely for a higher fee than that which Favreau took for Iron Man. The source said "They're not paying him the same wage. They're definitely paying him a higher fee to direct this one. What, do people think Marvel is stupid? Of course, the movie was successful, so they're offering him more.""   click to show
