I went straight for Robot Jox because I read about how that movie was put together with damn near no money, like no one could tell, yet Gordon still went for so much. Poor production planning on his part... probably. Doesn't change the fact that those miniatures still feel more real than CGI. OK, and Gordon has a special place in my heart for bringing Herbert West to life... so to speak.
And it was in the theater?? I thought it went straight to video! |

Wow... I am amazed my father somehow did not take me to go see it when I was a kid.
Still, back to why I am afraid of an emphasis on CGI. We as the consumers of the entertainment industry have had some rather bad comic book adaptions forced on our plate... yet we ate it up. I won't drop any names //cough// ELEKTRA //cough cough// DAREDEVIL //cough// -excuse me- of the ones I didn't care for. Some movies pull it off. I will admit I loved the comic book feel del Toro accomplished in Hellboy and am stoked about the next one. Yeah some of the effects were hokey, others were great. Overall, it was a really fun movie that got me to just relax and enjoy. For me, I would not expect Iron Man to be a movie where the comic book feel would be emphasized. Think Batman Begins or The Punisher. Yes, Punisher had a lot of crazy things going on in it, just look at the Russian, but the movie was, in my opinion, a character-intense movie that Jane pulled off. Travolta's kinda sucked at the end... but c'est la vi. Both the movies mentioned are about an intense portrayal of the characters, not on the comic book feel... OK let's forget about the microwave emitter. The character Stark suffers his demons and keeps some dark secrets (drinking, fragment in his heart), and went through an intense ordeal. To me, these make a perfect opportunity to make another intense-character based flick, and not some popcorn action-packed darkly-humorous with side stories up the wazoo flick. Iff (if and only if) RDJ can make a really believable Stark, or some jerk gazillionaire engineer I want to become, I will probably just sit back and let the characters have their way with me, regardless of the CGI. -Yes, that did sound bad- |
I refuse to get excited about this movie. The last batch of Marvel movies (Spider-man 3, X-men 3, Fantastic Four 1&2, and Ghost Rider) have sucked so much that I wont get my hopes up for Iron Man. Who knows maybe I'll be surprised if it isn't horrible.

Damn, as soon as I finally get DSL, the Iron Man Super Bowl clip goes bye-bye. :(

Edit: Just a reminder to everyone Tony Stark is a NeoCon. He loves war, he's a conservative through and through, and he probably voted for Bush. When you see Iron Man, assuming it's true to the comic, you will think that it's a government conspiracy. It's not. Iron Man is to comics as Fox News is to news. I hope everyone is clear on this so they can turn off their brains and enjoy the movie. |
Did you just introduce math to this thread, will? ;-P
|
Wow that new trailer looks good. I hope it is.

In case no one noticed the universe imploding upon itself over the past 2 days, Iron Man has been released to critics and it's getting absurdly good reviews. We're talking 95% on Rotten Tomatoes with a sample size of 81 reviews. This is ground breaking...even the best of comic book movies never have that high of a tomatometer.........

I am so hyped for this movie. get to see it tonight. Buddy scored prescreening tickets for us. I'll let you know if it is worth it or not. :D
|
Oh my sweet fucking Jesus, this movie fucking rocked! They did EVERYTHING right. See it, see it now, see it often. I will not give any spoilers, but I will say this. Do NOT leave before the credits are over. You MUST watch them to the end.
|
96% after 120 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes - THANK YOU JESUS
|
I am so looking forward to this! I am trying to get someone to go with me this afternoon.

Spoiler: Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury is actually kinda lame.
|
Iron Man was the SHIT!! The only action movie in recent memory I've wanted to go see again.
Sort of a spoiler, but not really: I kept waiting for Obediah to make a White Russian. They should have had John Goodman in it long enough to call Obediah "Dude." Because Spoiler: Jeff Bridges "The Big Lebowski" is Obediah. You might not recognize him at first. And Halx's spoiler is right on. |

What is lame is Hasselhoff as Nick Fury. LINK By the way... I saw Iron Man last night... and it was very good. I highly recommend seeing this one. I think I might be even better than the comics (which were always kind of boring). |
Did anyone catch Spoiler: the War Machine reference?
|
Question with spoiler in it:
Spoiler: The name of the terrorist group was The Ten Rings. Is that a reference to Mandarin? I'm not a big Iron Man fanboy, but aren't they mortal enemies? |

This movie was great. It was really well done and everyone seemed to fit their roles very well. |

Next time, baby. :suave: |
It was pretty good. I'd give it 3 stars out of 4. The only thing I was disappointed with was Spoiler: how the business partner turned into generic "I'LL GET YOU GADGET!!" bad guy with a huge mech suit at the end. Come on, the entire movie was smarter than that, why did they have to settle for that bullshit??
|
Fantastic.
It managed to live up to the spectacular trailers. I think they even actually read the comic. I look forward to the inevitable Iron Man 2 with great interest. |
Spoiler: this thread looks like some confidential whitehouse document

Just got home from the movie, and can safely say it was great. My wife liked it too, and she's not normally a fan of big action comic book adaptations.
My only not of dissent was actually that throughout the movie they use snatches of a cover of the Black Sabbath Iron Man riff, but use an anodyne instrumental version with no bite in the closing credits - it would have worked really well to have a full vocal version by someone (if not Ozzy etc). |

I have yet to see this film and therefore cannot comment on it's quality. However, I just received a phone call from my sister's boyfriend telling me that when I go see it I have to stay right to the end of the credits. I am now passing this pearl of wisdom onto the TFP.

19-year-old daughter's reaction to the film: It was awesome!
48-year-old boyfriend's reaction to the film: eh, it was alright... Think I'll be waiting for the dvd. |

Quite frankly, I could give 2 shits about it. Spoiler: Samuel L. Jackson hasn't impressed me since Pulp Fiction or MAYBE Die Hard 3. |
I would have stayed to the end (I normally do) but the teenage wankery of the pricks in the row in front of me caused us to leave.
Ho hum. |

Excellent acting, perfect pacing, fantastic special effects...everything just seemed to work, even the "Dude" as Stane. I don't like Jon Faverau stuff on principle, but...wow....very well done. As far as bad guys go, meh....but it's a classic and I just don't see how they could've started with anything else. Plus now that that's out of the way, it's on to bigger and badder....baddies? |
