It was fantastic! Kylie Minogue's part wasn't as bad as I feared it would be, and the actor who played Richard on Keeping Up Appearances was on too. I'm so glad Doctor Who is back on Sci-Fi Fridays. There really is no other show I love to watch more after a long week. And every time the Doctor puts on his glasses...rawr.

Doesn't Singapore use PAL TV format? You should be able to buy the UK region discs soon.

Failing that, if you have a proxy in the UK, you can watch each episode on the BBC iPlayer (you may be able to do this elsewhere in the world - check the BBC webiste for details).

fresnelly 04-19-2008 04:10 PM

Stupid CBC won't be playing it here in Canada until Hockey is over.

And they wonder why so many are turning to uh, other avenues in order to get it.

Daniel_ 04-20-2008 04:07 AM

This week's was good. Spoiler: The oponent was the evil corporation that controls and distributes the Ood to be servants

Next week's trailer looks cracking fun too. Spoiler: The Sontarans are back - last seen in the original run when I was a kid

Head Writer Russel T Daies is clearly working the story arc this year too Spoiler: Once again this week, there was talk of loss and all things must pass, which co-incided with use of Rose's theme from the BadWolf episode in series 1

Hain 05-01-2008 01:03 AM

This episode was great with the Sontarans. The cliff hanger was perfect. Spoiler: The general and the kid talking at the end, as well as the kid joining in with the Sontaran warriors' Sontar chant for some reason captured me. Just damned cool.

ShaniFaye 05-01-2008 03:01 AM

I have now seen thru epi 4 and I honestly cant decide if I like Donna or not, Im leaning towards not...I cant put my finger on exactly whats bothering me about her

Aw she's good.

I loved the Spoiler: part in ep4 where she told the Doctor she was leaving and he got the wrong end of the stick

I like the fact she's a grown-up, and not a little girl who wants to bed the Doctor - Donna just wants to TRAVEL with him.

ColonelSpecial 05-01-2008 10:48 AM

Shani, I am with you on Donna. I have seen interviews with her on TV and she seems really sweet and cool but the writing/story arc they have for her seem really awkward. I am hoping the reason for this comes out in future episodes.

ShaniFaye 05-03-2008 05:45 PM

ok.....I just have to say.....the line in tonites epi (pt 2) Spoiler: when he put on the gas mask and said "are you my mommy" was genius lol

Daniel_ 05-04-2008 08:29 AM

Spoiler: MUMMY, damnit! Bloody Americans. :p

I thought the second part was very good. Next week we've got Spoiler: The Doctor's Daughter to look foreward to!

ShaniFaye 05-04-2008 08:48 AM

ok ok, yes you're right...I typed it wrong lol

and yes Im interested in see how next week is going to play out

SecretMethod70 05-04-2008 05:53 PM

some trivia: the actress playing The Doctor's Daughter (Georgia Moffett) is Peter Davison's (Doctor #5) real life daughter.

Datalyss 05-04-2008 09:47 PM

I think The Doctor's Daughter is on June 6th on SciFi.

ShaniFaye 05-05-2008 02:42 AM

The wait isn't what bothers me...it's the 10-15 minutes of missing episode cut for commercials. Totally ruins it.

it might look that way, but the original BBC broadcasts (not including the Christmas specials) are 45 minutes long.

SecretMethod70 05-05-2008 07:44 PM

You're right, my time was off, but I could swear they cut stuff. Even if they don't, it screws with the pacing. That's me being picky though.

ShaniFaye 05-06-2008 03:20 AM

I know for a fact the sci fi version of Pompeii was cut down from the UK version....I watched both, I know what they didnt show us here, and part of it was the the ending. Voyage of the Damned was cut when they showed it on Sci Fi too

If you want specific examples of what was cut out of our versions, they are elaborated on the doctor who forum

Until America stops cutting the original version...I will be watching the UK version

Those are my thoughts exactly. :paranoid:

And that was genius, Spoiler: "Are you my mummy?" Funny as hell. I did like the end with kid. That kid was not one with whom to fuck.

Daniel_ 05-06-2008 12:45 PM

I bet that they have to cut out a lot to fit a 45 minute show into an hour long slot in the US with adverts. :(

ShaniFaye 05-06-2008 12:58 PM

Put it this way Daniel they cut Spoiler: the entire ending scene of Pompeii " 6 months later" where the family was in their new house and the son was kneeling before the Dr and Donna house idols....along with other bits from when they exit the escape pod and enter the house

Really! Spoiler: I thought that ending was crucial demonstrating that as aliens are becoming more and more known, so are the works of the Doctor. Before now, the Doctor has always left before credit can be given to him... which I felt made his character better.

Daniel_ 05-06-2008 01:14 PM

That's insane - they didn't edit it, they switched it off when they needed a final ad break!

Daniel_ 05-10-2008 10:37 AM

This week - "The Doctor's Daughter". Great story. You're going to love it!

I really liked the newest episode. The story wasn't what I was expecting at all and you got some backstory on the Doctor (I'm not saying anything more) which is always nice. I like Donna the more I see of her. I hope she stays around for awhile.

Also, Spoiler: she was actually supposed to stay dead, but Stephen Moffatt convinced them not to kill her. I can't wait until hopefully he takes over and RTD leaves. There was a glaring plot hole regarding the age of Cobb and when asked about it, RTD's response was basically "gee, I never thought about that."

Dunno if it airs on sci-fi, but I download it. Haven't ept up with watching it though. I think I'll have to make sure and watch the most recent one if it means I get to look at Georgia Moffett some more!

I wish they'd bring back Carey Mulligan too (Sally from "Blink").

cookmo 05-13-2008 08:34 AM

Ok, so I really really dont like Donna!

Hain 05-13-2008 09:23 AM

@cookmo:
Eh she has her faults but I like her.

I believe this was brought up in a 'Confidential. The original Doctor Who companions were kind of useless, always needed saving. The new series, the creators wanted to do away with that cliche female role. So Piper was supposed to create this new aura of the Doctor's companion. However, I still felt like she was a kid, and did not fulfill this role. Freema Agyeman did a much better job at this. I think Tate has done the best job at this. She is quick, she is assertive, and she doesn't just give up.

Hold on a minute!

Starting at the beginning:

Susan Foreman - the Doctors grandaughter. Left his care to rebuild an Earth ravaged by Daleks.
Barbara Wright - a shoolteacher. Stood up to the Doctor and looked after Susan.
Ian Chesterton - rides horses, fights with swords, goes on rescue missions.
Jamie McCrimmon - 18th Century highland warrior
Dr Elizabth Shaw - civilian doctor in UNIT (sounds familiar)
Jo Grant - civilian UNIT operative
Sarah Jane Smith - the only old companion who came back in the new run (so far).
Harry Sullivan - a member of the Royal Navy, and another Doctor in UNIT.
Leela - savage descendant of a crashed Earth spaceship. Nice line in leather bikinis and killing things.
Romana (and Romana II) - time lady. Nuff said.
Nyssa - Helps defeat the Master after he kills her father. Mathematical genius.
Adric - a bit of a git, but he does die in a blaze of glory and self sacrifice.
Ace - clobbered a Dalek with a baseball bat. That tough enough for you?

ShaniFaye 05-14-2008 02:58 AM

I know this is totally offtopic, but for any Doctor Who fan that reads the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, do you know that Jamie's character was based on Jamie McCrimmon....its true, she explained it last year when I went to hear her speak

Spoiler: Definitely should have stayed dead. Not because it was cheesy-it was. Not because it's a bad premise-it is. But rather because she's such an annoying little thing wasn't she? Nice to look at, I won't argue, but much, much too annoying to listen to for long...

Quote:

Today the BBC announced that Steven Moffat, writer of several brilliant episodes in the time-traveling adventure show Doctor Who, will take over as showrunner next year for the fifth season of the network's rebooted series. Like current showrunner Russell T. Davies, Moffat has been a fan of Doctor Who since he was young. He told reporters, "My entire career has been a secret plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back because the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven." Many Doctor Who fans have been worried about the fate of the show as Davies steps down.

Davies, best known before Doctor Who for creating the show Queer as Folk, has become something of a legend among fans for rebooting a show it was thought might never return. Though the show had been on the air pretty much continuously since the early 1960s, it ground to a halt in the late 80s. After over a decade on hiatus, punctuated by one 1990s movie and a lot of great audio plays, Doctor Who finally returned to life when Davies reimagined the doctor as a more modern, dangerous, and sexy character. Taking his cues from the witty-scary style of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Davies truly managed to reinvent Who for a new generation, garnering top ratings for the show, which currently plays all over the world.

Steven Moffat's writing on the new Doctor Who has been part of what has made the show so compelling. He's worked on some of the most memorable stories like "The Empty Child" (which introduced the character of Captain Jack, who later got his own show, Torchwood), and the much-awarded "Blink," about some seriously creepy aliens who only move when you aren't looking at them. He also wrote the awesome BBC miniseries Jekyll last year. So you can count on Doctor Who's fifth season to have a lot of horror in it.

Davies will be working on four Doctor Who specials in 2009, but Moffat will be running the show proper. There have been rumors that the current Doctor, the fauxhawked, goofy-adorable David Tennant, may leave after this season but they have not been confirmed. If true, it could mean Doctor Who's fifth season will start with a clean slate: new showrunner, new actor in the role of Doctor.

Hain 05-20-2008 09:35 PM

Moffat-- don't let a new Doctor come in!!! We have so few left!

Seriously, unless they are going to get Paul McGann for a lost series of Doctor Who... I don't know what they are going to do.

SecretMethod70 05-20-2008 10:02 PM

It's Doctor Who, they can do whatever they want. They've always been quite forthright about the fact the "rules" serve the story, not the other way around. So, if The Doctor "runs out" of regenerations, they'll just write a story that has him gain more. (And if they bring back the Time Lord, this will be really easy, seeing as how they've done similar things before.) Really, they could just have The Doctor miraculously regenerate and "Whoa! Don't know how that happened but cool!" We'd all accept it (because Doctor Who is not about creating scientific realism) and continue watching.

ColonelSpecial 05-21-2008 02:12 AM

I think it is cool that the creators/writers can make up new rules for the Who universe. So many times, sci-fi/fantasy shows get canceled before they really are able to stretch around in the created universe. Doctor Who, having such a long run, is able to reference rules from past seasons and change them to fit radical situations. It is usually done really well and when it is, the result is stellar.

Hain 05-22-2008 10:01 AM

SecretMethod70 05-22-2008 10:37 AM

Yup. It's a really interesting (and sad, and sorta scary) situation.

I only hope that most people already know about the situation, so that when they hear about it on Doctor Who (and, undoubtedly, eventually see some Doctor Who explanation, seeing as how disappearing things seem to be a pattern this season) they don't think it's just something the writers made up.

SecretMethod70 05-24-2008 12:41 PM

I just downloaded the Doctor Who Confidential for The Doctor's Daughter...Georgia Moffett is really cute even with different hair colors! :p :D (Her hair is dyed red in the Confidential.)

Willravel 05-24-2008 12:47 PM

Cute? Georgia Moffett is HOT. I've got a soft spot for hot women with british accents. And I usually hope they have a soft spot for me.

SecretMethod70 05-24-2008 01:26 PM

And the next trailer is great.

Spoiler: It's got Rose, Daleks, and (probably) Davros in the shadows

Min 06-12-2008 12:32 AM

It's good to see a Whovian community here.
I do enjoy Donna best, of the new companions. No lovey dovey between them, thank goodness. The move of the Doctor in a sexual being, honestly, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The aloof, powerful and asexual Doctor suits the idea, to my mind, of an alien with the capacity to travel space and time. Time Lords would certainly be more detached from the experience, while caring.

They have turned him into an emotional cripple with companions that swoon and bat their lashes. At least Donna has the verve to tell him what she really thinks.
Another "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" and I'll curl into a ball of self-hatred because I, like a dutiful fan, watches every week hoping for the best.

I have gone back and watched the old series and don't feel that lose one sometimes does because shows just don't make the transition. The stories do feel timeless. The acting is quality and I am so enthralled, I frankly don't care about the cheesy effects. Heck, it gives it some charm.

I was excited Moffat was taking over so there'd be a move away from this addle-patted drivel of catchy one-liners, plots with holes enough to be a sieve, and blatently and construed emotional moments. It doesn't do to have a character die if you just don't give a damn about them.

Last week's Forest of the Dead, well, without splashing spoilers, I will say, the series hit my saturation point of tolerance. They are breaching the sancrosant territory of Mystery. Anymore 'startling revelations' and there's nothing left of the character.

I have much more to rant because my passion is strong for one of the few fandoms I belong....but all that said, I wait with anticipation for every episode, Confidential and commentary.

Then, the sad news that Moffat was in the 'ship' camp of thoughts. My hopes have been dashed upon the cliffs of anticipation.

The latest episode, Midnight, is another filler plot to me that RTD writes before his "extravaganza" finales. I can't say I'm disappointed because I expected it to be bad.
If that wasn't shades of The Hand of Fear, I'm not sure what is.

Yay! I just got introduced to Doctor Who and I love it, I want to watch more and see the old series! Thank you Hain!

Hain 06-22-2008 05:49 AM

Because I once again have free time: The Doctor's name, what is it?

I have had some ideas since they keep repeating in the new series that his name is a guarded secret, or it is more than a secret. The only incorrect reference I remember was Drax from the Armageddon Factor calling the Doctor "Pete" (he was actually calling Thete, short for his nickname from university days as Theta Sigma).

So: names? Since the Doctor has nothing but bad luck following him I would have so say that his name can't be too good. Loki comes to mind.

ShaniFaye 06-22-2008 07:09 AM

Really really enjoyed Turn Left!! ugh now I gotta wait for next week and we get Captain Jack woooohoooo

question: Spoiler: Dave and I noticed that Rose sounded REALLY funny when she talked, almost like she was talking with her mouth full...anyone else notice that? It was really annoying

freelod 06-22-2008 11:45 PM

i have enjoyed it a lot...

Hain 06-23-2008 09:29 AM

@ ShaniFaye: I agree.

For a second there, I thought they were going for Muse's Apocalypse Please as the ending song of that episode. Looks like a no holds bar season finale for Doctor Who is coming over the horizon.

"He’s like fire and ice and rage. He’s like the night, and the storm at the heart of the sun. He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe"

Daniel_ 06-23-2008 11:06 AM

Shanni: If you look cosely at the last episode, you'll notice that Billie Piper seems to have had dental work - her top lip wasn't moving right, and he voice was odd.

Hain: The Doctor's "real" name is such a secret that it's never been created. In the "confidential" for the library ep, Steve Moffatt confesed that he has no idea what the Doctor is actually called, and the director was asked to shoot the whispering scene so that you can't even tell how many sylables it is.

The true name of a timelord is like the true name of a wizard on Earthsea - it gives one power over the timelord.

BUTSpoiler: the doctor lite epi coming up with Rose looks interesting

I cant believe there are only 3 more epi's left!!

Those two episodes were fantastic. The best two hours I've spent doing...well, anything really in quite some time. Once I realized Moffat wrote them as well...it just makes me that much more excited to see Davies step down.

I've been trying to catch up, but I think I'm going to watch those two again before moving on.

SecretMethod70 06-27-2008 02:01 PM

And they wonder why people download instead of watching it on TV. Sci-Fi Channel may end up cutting 20+ minutes from this season's finale.

Wait, did I miss something? RTD is stepping down and Moffat is taking over?

From what I understand after reading that post, we're going to have a proper season with 4 of those episodes being written by RTD?

ColonelSpecial 06-28-2008 10:14 AM

There will be only four specials next year with a new full season starting in 2010 (if I read correctly). RTD will help write these four specials and then be done. Moffet will still be overseeing everything starting with the four specials.

Daniel_ 06-28-2008 11:53 AM

Oh my fucking word!

"Tha Stolen Earth" is one of the best episodes so far. If you onlyget sci-fi's cut down version, do yoursef a favour and find a way to watch the full version.

Can't wait for next week.

Willravel 06-28-2008 11:57 AM

I cant' wait to see Richard Dawkins on Doctor Who.

Well, so that happened. Spoiler: I wonder who will replace Tennant. I must admit I was pissed that Eccleston was replaced or rather regenerated so quickly, but Tennant has done a brilliant job and really grew into the Chuck Taylors quite well. Who do you suppose could be next?

Church 06-28-2008 10:54 PM

Spoiler: You know I'm actually kinda upset. I really hate it when the doctor regens. I become so attached to the actor playing him that I really don't want to see them go. I loved Eccelston, but I think Tennant grew on me more.

Edit: I was just thinking, does anyone think its possible that Tennant may be returning for the next "season"? Is it possible that all this is another alt timeline since that albino woman told Donna she still had something on her back..? I was on IMDB and someone brought up a good point. Back when the Dr. and Donna went to Pompeii, Lucious said to Donna that she had something on her back, and this was long before the events of Turn Left. So I don't know what to think, just throwing it out there!

Willravel 06-29-2008 01:35 AM

I think your edit might be right, Church, but it could just be wishful thinking.

Hain 06-29-2008 02:44 AM

@ Church:

Spoiler: Does the woman tell Donna there is something or there was something on her back? Because if she said is, given what was said in Pompeii, yes this could all be an alternate universe.

And I get pissed when he regenerates too!

Daniel_ 06-29-2008 03:02 AM

Spoiler: David Tennant is in next week's episode, and has already filmed the Christmas special, as well as signing up for several specials next year.

The "regeneration" therefore can't go through fully, or gets undone by a McGuffin - my bet is that it's something to do with the Doctor's living hand from "The Christmas Invasion".

There's also the fact that the Medusa Cascade has been time stepped a second off reality, and that Dalek Caan broke into the time bubble that the Time War was trapped in - so it may well be that the entire story is in a non-universe.

ShaniFaye 06-29-2008 10:25 AM

OMG what an awesome episode!! Spoiler: really could have done without rose's selfish bitch crap at the Noble's house though, but I guess thats what makes Rose, Rose. Also....LOVED the part with Donna pointing to Jack asking who he was lol......*sigh* I've missed Jack

I know David's ben filming stuff for future epi's so I cant wait to see how the story plays out

Daniel, is it set to air next weekend? I know they arent showing one here because of the 4th but I dont see that messing up y'alls schedule

oh and... Spoiler: did anyone watching the Confidential notice that Mickey and Jackie were sitting there next to the Doctor at the first read through?

Daniel_ 06-29-2008 01:11 PM

The episode is running next week, and it's an hour long - but last I heard Sci Fi US were set to run it down to 40 minutes.

And as for the cast on the final ep, there was a publicity shot that the BBC put out that shows everyone that was on screen in confidential, so it wasn't a total shock...

ShaniFaye 06-29-2008 01:21 PM

Well since finding out sci fi is cutting all the epi's they play here I havent watched any that way. I heard the final epi is actually 65 minutes over there.

I cant wait im so excited!!!!

not that I give two figs for Richard Dawkins, but just as trivia did you know he's married to the 2nd Romana (she married him after marrying/divorcing Tom Baker)

 That's awesome. I miss Tom Baker. My stats prof was an avid fan of the [T.] Baker years- he even had a TARDIS model in his office. We once talked about how if Baker didn't leave the show, he probably could have been keeping the fans happy all the way through the 90's and we would have then missed Peterson (somewhat a loss, in my opinion), Colin Baker (no loss whatsoever), and McCoy (a big loss). However, I think this would have allowed for McGann to come in successfully. I always drew a line from T Baker to McGann; McGann being the even younger-at-hearts Baker replacement. Replacement is the wrong word in my opinion, but I can't think of anything better.

I'm sure that's why he was on. It's a shame she wasn't on, too. There are so few time ladys about these days.

We can only hope Spoiler: Rose is far away from becoming one.

EDIT: You have no idea how loud I was cheering when I Spoiler: heard the Dalek, hoping it would shoot her just before she got to the Doctor. As Tom Baker's Doctor said after he dared not to destroy the Daleks before they were ever created, "While they are a great evil, I know there will be great good in time because of them." I was hoping for one of those great goods then...

ShaniFaye 06-29-2008 04:10 PM

I just want it to be next saturday damn it!!

Sadly that's no longer the case, Hain.

Spoiler: She made it back to Gallifrey and became president - check out the Big Finish audio adventures
