goethe (fixed the picture)

here is an artwork that i have just finished creating. it's johann wolfgang von goethe's silhouette projected on the wall. the light that is aimed at the wall hits the trash that i hung from the ceiling with fishing wire and forms his shadow.

magntus, i spent around 2 weeks working on the project, and have been planning on doing something with shadows for a little while longer. it was a project i did for the bauhaus universität.

That's incredible. Wow.

I really like the ambiance that this piece gives off (to me at least).

I always wish that I could do truly inspired work like this! Have you had much gallery or media exposure?

I can't remember where I saw it but this reminds me of a Japanese artist who created the shadow of a motorcycle with a huge pile of silverware. Very impressive work! Are you trying to say something about Goethe by making his silhouette with garbage?

quiggles, no commisions =) i'm still not that desperate... maybe in a couple of years =/
bermuda: sure i am trying to say something about goethe, in a contemporary fashion. and i think it's also important to see this as an installation: it is in weimar, germany, where goethe spent almost 45 years of his life, and for the most part where he wrote faust and his philosophy on color theory. he has become a pop-status in weimar, and is now basically a tourist trap (much like strattford is for shakespeare, im sure). not only am i trying to scream out in a whisper that goethe's poetry was naive and 'eingebildet', but rather more trying to state that goethe's mystique or prescence in the city of weimar has become as banal and used-up as the trash that i throw away in my apartment.
please do not get me wrong, i very much like goethe. he created beautiful, dreamy poems and plays and some of the most profound literature, but he has his weak sides and realities that he chose to deny. if you are interested, look at some texts by einstein about goethe. he despised him =)

Great concept beautifully realized. I remember watching the Lion King musical when disparate elements suddenly came together to create the head of a great lion. Things forming with intent from such unintended sources is very moving. Congratulations jaker.

sultana, the whole thing took about 2 weeks to create. it was very complicated to put together because the fishing wire was taped to the ceiling (or just tied in a knot) and sometimes i would come the next day and part of the sculpture had fallen down, so i had to start over again.
and when you walk by it, the whole thing moves from the air your movement creates, it's incredibly brittle :-/
thanks all for your comments, they are very kind and motivational, i want to work further now :-)

jaker-

First, awesome piece!

Second, you said that the breeze of walking by it moves it. Would it be possible to use a fine wire? What limitations would you have with something other than string? What about two strings per piece to keep them in the right spots? I'm just curious...

Third... awesome piece!
