I haven't posted any of my work since the Great Crash, but I got started by playing with Bryce and Poser. Bryce has a very intuitive interface and has a fairly broad range of uses. It's great for terrains & simple objects, and it's a good (and cheap) primer for more expensive 3D tools like 3D Studio or Maya.

I wouldn't go for Poser unless you have Bryce or another 3D suite at hand... it's good for setting up figures, but not so good at placing them in scenes with other objects & rendering the total package. Consider it a side-application for putting people into the worlds you can create with Bryce.

3d Studio MAX does rule, I started with that after playing around with poser and bryce. I've also used lightwave, but the interface is the suck compared to MAX. Bryce and poser are good for beginners, and MAX is a good step up. I want to learn Maya, that program can do some amazing things...

and I think my friend's sister goes there too, dilbert

I wouldn't reccommend starting with Maya, I'm still not sure what the hell I'm doing with it.

Heheheh... that's exactly how I felt with 3DS Max. Didn't help that the damn program kept crashing every time I tried to save anything.

But with Maya I did this in about 2 weekends. Unfortunately, being such a newbie with the program, I let that thing get to an unmanagable polygon count. Looks great, but I had to scrap it to start over with a more tolerable size.

Don't get discouraged though... Maya is tons of fun once things click
