I haven't posted any of my work since the Great Crash, but I got started by playing with Bryce and Poser. Bryce has a very intuitive interface and has a fairly broad range of uses. It's great for terrains & simple objects, and it's a good (and cheap) primer for more expensive 3D tools like 3D Studio or Maya.
I wouldn't go for Poser unless you have Bryce or another 3D suite at hand... it's good for setting up figures, but not so good at placing them in scenes with other objects & rendering the total package. Consider it a side-application for putting people into the worlds you can create with Bryce.
