Haptonomy

My docter advised me to go to a haptotherapist.
Is there someone out here that can tell me what to expect? I did a little research on the internet but it all sounds very vague...
What is your experience with this?

(I also posted this question in Health&Fitness almost a month ago but I'm not getting reactions from women. Since the men there don't react other than 'it's just a load of crap' I really would like some women's reaction. Thanks!)

What is it exactly that your doctor suggested this for? It seems like some applications of haptonomy are legitimate, along with traditional medicine, but others i am a bit sceptical about. I think if i knew more about why you might be doing this, i could give you a better opinion.

Thanks for your reactions!

A month ago I had really bad headaches and I was extremely tired. After about a week I went to the docter and we came to the conclusion that I had too much to cope with the last year and that I needed some time off. To make sure this wouldn't take more time that absolutely nessesary (I hate being sick and not working) the haptotherapist could help me to find a way to cope with this stress without having these headaches...

I'm just not sure how this will work and why. I was wondering if someone here has experience with this and would like to share it. I already had an appointment but we only talked and she didn't give me more information than I already found.

This sounds like something that i would probably have gone to a regular therapist for... but since you've already gone once, maybe you should stick with it for a while and see how it works. Unfortunately, i can't really tell you what to expect, cause i've never seen a haptotherapist. It doesn't seem very common in the states, although germany and the netherlands seem to be more up to date with it. Good luck. Let us know how everything goes for you.

i'd love to help but i've never heard of it. i too would have thought to just go to a normal therapist. if you learn more let us know how things are going, cause now you have me curious. good luck.

Here is something that I found. http://194.68.145.1/ALBEDA/UK/HAPTONOM.HTM
And if you have the time for a LOT of reading there is this as well. http://www.nel.edu/22_4/NEL220401X02_Veldman_.pdf

I don't know how helpful it would or wouldn't be. From what I've heard, this type of therapy is similar to acupunture in theory. It is based on activating points in the body through touch that will help to heal the individual.

I don't know anything about it's success. To me the theory sounds very reasonable. There are so many medical studies showing how touch is so important to the healing process physically and mentally. Children who are held and nurtured with touch develop more fully and are generally more healthy. "Kangaroo" care in premie nurseries is implimented in so many places because they've found that the child thrives so much more when placed in skin to skin contact with the mother. Just a hug is healing emotionally and physically.

I would be open to trying this kind of therapy. I'm curious to know how it goes. I hope you find help.

I think I'm beginning to understand this concept. Sounds good, since you are see both this and a traditional tharapist then you'll probably be able to make your own decision. good luck.

Haptonomy

Hi there, I had gotten a treatment when visiting St Marrten about 4 or 5 yrs ago. It was absolutely wonderful. I had become so relaxed, it just took all of the stress from my body. I do not know how to explain the experience any other way, but it was amazing. I was sad to find out when I revisited, that the lady had gone back home. I have not found any places in the US that specialize in that technique of energy work. (if that is even what you call it)

Dont know about the hap stuff - but you describe exactly the way I felt after visiting the local buddhist monastary. I was a religious studies student at the time, so we visited all sorts, but the buddhists were wonderfull. One of the monks just had us go through breathing. I went in with loads of worry, essays, dissertation, kids and job etc. When I got on the minibus when we left, it was like I had not a care in the world. I would certainly recommend it to anyone with an open mind. When I had an attempted spinal tap or 8 - I went back to the breathing like at the monastary. Take them food, they can not ask for or take it, and they do not eat past mid day as I recall.
