Growing up and makeup
I was watching a recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians where Kim's 11-year-old sister is starting to wear makeup (LOTS of it), pushup bras, and revealing clothing. It made me reminisce on the days when I first put makeup on.
1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before? 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? For me: I wore kiddie makeup as far back as I can remember. It was always the same kind. Strawberry scented sheer lipstick with edible candy blush and a plastic mascara wand and tube and those fake glittery nails with those sparkly stickers. My friends and I would always put on our "makeup" and get our plastic and vinyl purses (I had a Minni Mouse one) and strut around the cul-de-sac pretending to be ladies of luxury. We even smoked real cigarettes in my friend's room. XD Then, I grew up and turned to a double-digits gal (I turned 10). I went to the dollar store near my house with my best friend and we bought some bright red lipgloss and fake red nails. We put these on and danced around her livingroom to NSync and Britney Spears and the Spice Girls. One day, I dared to go to school fabbed out in this and I ALMOST got to class with it all on. but my teacher saw me and told me to take it all off. ~le sigh~ I grew much older. In fact, a whole year older, and I got my very own bra! Not some retarded training bra... that was so third grade. I was in six grade now, and that meant I had boob...lets. And that meant I could wear bras! And platform Soda shoes! Even though my mom bought me HIGH heels since I was 6... all the other girls finally got their own high heels and we could finally talk about it with eachother! I turned 13.. and my booblets turned to B cups.. and my age was a TEEN. so, this, of course, meant it was time for a pushup bra! and low cut shirts! And tight pants! AND real makeup! I turned Goth and wore corsets and short skirts and tall boots and lots of makeup. I wore tons of black eyeshadow and eyeliner and deep red lipstick. It was fun. I turned 16 and my makeup got more colorful. I wore purple and blue eyeshadow, bright glittery lipgloss, crazy colored hair. I showed off my tatas! (I was already a D by then) Wore thongs! Used tampons! 16 year old me was always on-the-go.. I was a rainbow blur. 18 came and I got a job... got a life... got bored. My makeup was the same as it is now: beige, tan, and 'mushroom' eyeshadow, no liner (usually), mascara, and chapstick. I gave away my many boots. (Though, I saved my combat boots in case I feel a revival coming on!) I wear simple clothes.. stuff I would've never shopped at when I was 13: American Eagle, Forever 21, H&M, Aeropostale, Macy's, Gap. Most of my peers are finally embracing their womanhood. Some finally have gotten those C cups they've always wanted.. some D cups.. and they've grown into those low cut tees. They either wear tons of makeup.. or almost no makeup. In fact.. a few months ago I assisted my friend in finding her very first pushup bra. ![]() |

Interesting bit of reflection.
I obtained my first bra in the sixth grade. My mom sat down with me and had a chat that I couldn't wear training bras anymore, that I was too big and needed something real. I said "Finally." Apparently my sister put up more of a fight about this than I did. Unfortunately my mother thought she knew how to fit me for a proper bra, but didn't really. Years passed with me purchasing bras that didn't fit right at all. In 2005 or maybe 2006 I finally figured out my real bra size. It's a bit of an obscure size and I wasn't shopping in places that carried it. It makes a big difference on appearance. I had play makeup as a kid. Never did much with it. I would occasionally put it on my dolls and wash it off. I was much more into nail polish. Starting at about age 8, I constantly had some rediculous color on my nails. I dropped nail polish in high school. It jus wasn't worth the hassle to keep it up. Picked it back up in college and have stuck mainly to neutral tones ever since. I wore high heels every sunday to church starting at age 12. I didn't like them very much at first, mainly because I was wearing a size and style that didn't really work for my feet. Once I figured that out, I looked forward to wearing them. I became very comfortable in heels. During high school I was in the show choir and danced in heels (character shoes). In college I took ballroom courses wherein I also danced in heels. I'm fairly comfortable in heels. I wear them nearly every day now. I had to wear so much makeup for performances that I had no inclination to wear makeup when I had the option to avoid it. I had quite a full selection of stage makeup. None of this would have worked for every-day use. The few times I decided to do my makeup in high school my sister teased me mercilessly. I started wearing makeup on my own when I went away to college. Even then, it was sparingly. I didn't have much when it came to reasonable daily use stuff. I was mainly trying to work with my old stage makeup. It didn't work well. I had friends that would go to the mall and spand rediculous sums of money on makeup, then apply it terribly. I wanted nothing to do with that trend. Most of the time people didn't realize that I didn't wear makeup. I have fairly distinct features and can get away without it, I suppose. In preparation for my wedding, I finally purchased makeup for the first time. Real every-day use makeup that I enjoyed wearing. An artist friend of mine showed me how to play with colors and tones, and helped me to pick colors that would work well with my skin tone/eye color. The same friend stepped in and did my makeup for the wedding when the makeup artist bailed. I currently do my makeup several times a week. I'd like to do it every day, but sometimes I just don't have the time before I run out the door.

My first bra was a B cup. I got it when I was 11, before 6th grade. Though friends of mine wore training bras, I didn't see the need. I didn't want to wear something I saw as uncomfortable if I didn't have to. My boobs were a major source of woe in middle school; I blossomed from a B to a C by 7th grade. Compared to the other girls, I had quite a rack, and I got mercilessly teased because of it. One pair of girls on my bus proved to be real bullies. One of the girls made a habit of asking me for tissues on the bus in 7th grade; she quit when I very nearly flashed the entire back of the bus to prove that thanks, but these are real, sweetheart. The other girl stuck gum in my hair; I ripped it out and threw it back at her in front of the bus driver. She got written up for it, as the bus driver had known me since kindergarten, and this girl for six months.
![]() I don't wear pushup bras; I find that my breasts do their best to pop out of them. I prefer Body by Victoria bras with no padding or lining. Comfy yet lots of lift, so the girls always look great. I wore makeup for the first time in 3rd grade. A classmate and I snuck into the girls' bathroom together during recess and made up our faces. We didn't look terrible or obvious because we didn't want to get caught. I didn't like the sneaking around aspect of it though, and quit wearing makeup until 6th grade and middle school. I don't wear makeup often now--my SO doesn't like the look of it, but I do and I think it's fun, so I will wear makeup for special occasions or when I get dressed up. I last wore makeup at Easter. I used tampons for the first time during my first menstruation, at 12. We were going on vacation, and I wanted to be able to go in the pool and on the waterslides. I'd read in Seventeen magazine that using tampons was perfectly fine for someone my age, and my mom agreed. And honestly, I dress about the same. I've upgraded the snarky t-shirts of my youth to nicer tops and blouses, but they're still paired with corduroy trousers and cardigan sweaters. I even have a pair of Doc Martens from high school that I still wear from time to time. All in all, I turned out all right. I think my parents did a good job of guiding me through adolescence and beyond, and I thank them for it. They provided autonomy with clear boundaries, and it worked very well.

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before?
Yeah! Hell, I still occasionally pick up a Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker on occasion. But yeah, I liked playing with makeup in childhood. Usually just lipstick and nail polish, I wasn't real big on eye makeup. 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? I started trying to wear my mom's makeup in 6th grade to cover my acne. I had no idea what I was doing and went for a "more is more" policy. My dad was the one taking me to school, and God love his heart didn't know the difference. Finally my mom caught me and made me buy my own. 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? Way too much foundation, but I do more with my eye makeup now. 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? Um...seventh grade maybe? I wore sports bras constantly until that point. 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? 15. 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? I had no style then. The end. 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? I have no idea what they thought of my looks, and I really don't talk to a lot of the same people anymore...but I've noticed changes in some of my friends' style of dress just in the transition from student life into "adult" life. More polish, less "cute".

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before?Like SF (hey same initials as me lol) I lived to save my allowance for Bonnie Bell, especially the huge bubble gum lip "gloss" stick. My mama also sold Avon when I was little in the early 70's so I got to play with her "trial" sizes. Another thing I did was wear the makeup that was supposed to be used on my Barbie Head...I couldnt WAIT to be able to wear makeup for real.
2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? In 8th grade(13) I was allowed to wear kissing slicks (maybeline), especially the cinnamon kind and a little bit of mascara...when I started high school at 14 I could add eye liner and eye shadow (didnt need foundation). 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? I wore much more back then than I do now 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra?I was 10 when I got my first non-traning bra 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? I was a D cup by the time I was 14, I never needed a pushup and to this day I've never owned one 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then?I spent my paychecks at Lerners when I was in high school, I dressed very cute and current (for the 80's lol). I would dress the same way now, but 80's clothes from back then just havent made it back yet lol 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? I have no clue what they thought, I dressed for guys, not for other girls, and it must have worked because I was never guyless...and I didnt pay attention to what they wore either.

gg, I dunno how you can stand heels almost everyday! My friend is like you and wears heels a lot.. she is so used to them that she can run pretty fast in them.
snowy, that's weird how you were teased for having a big rack.. I never experienced that.. but I guess that's because I showed them off in my lowcut tops and corsets. SabrinaFair, DrPepper lipsmacker is awesome! XD My roommate and I still have those, too! They just smell so awesome and leave a sheer color on lips. ShaniFaye, I'm a D, too, but I still look for pushup or "uplift" bras. Some days my breasts feel draggy and saggy.. and other days they just lift up on their own. They have their own moods. |

Ametc I ended up an F cup, they dont really make push up bras for women that big, when I had my reduction 2 years ago it included a lift, so now they are as high and perky as they were at 14 lol

I was a total tomboy growing up, and except for a month-stint in 7th grade, I didn't wear makeup on a regular basis (plenty of stage makeup in high school, but that was it.) I didn't start wearing makeup until I was 27. I STILL can't do eyeliner.
As for bras...hmmm... I think I got my first one in 6th grade (putting me at what? 11? 12? something like that.) I discovered the wonderfulness of underwire in high school, but I don't think I owned a pushup bra until I was in my 20s.

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before? In grade school (80's) I used to get those fruit flavored roll-on lip glosses that were all the rage. I'm actually surprised my mom let me have them. 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? 16. Makeup was forbidden in my household and my mom finally relented after years of begging. I was pissed because she let my sister start wearing it at the same time and she was 14. 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? I wear far less now. I used to do the whole thing - foundation (which I didn't need, I'm genetically blessed with good skin), powder, eyeshadow/liner, mascara, blush, and lipstick. Now I usually just wear blush and mascara and if I'm feeling adventurous, a little lipstick. 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? Probably 14. I was a late bloomer. 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? I've never had one, and I don't have the desire to buy one. 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? I've always been simple - jeans and t-shirts mostly. I'm actually getting tired of it and would like to revamp my wardrobe and add some dressier shirts and slacks.

Hm. I've never heard of Lerners. A quick google search implies that it is the same as NY & Co. Is this the case?

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before?
Nope! 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? Tried to sneak it in jr high but was caught and didn't really start wearing any till junior year in high school 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? I wear more now only because I wear different stuff, like foundation, mascara, and eye liner and stuff 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? 6th grade 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? 19 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? I dressed like a loner outcast lol. Guys jeans and t-shirts and even when I tried to wear other stuff, I still gt weird looks. 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? I didn't really stay friends with many people from when I was younger, my bff says I still look the same. She has always been flamboyant.

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before?
Other than the occasional lip gloss, nope. I'm allergic to everything. 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? I started to wear eyeliner and mascara when I was about 20ish... finally found a few brands I could wear. 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? The same. 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? I was in an underwire at 11... sigh 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? I didn't feel the need to eat off them until I was about 25. ![]() 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? I hid myself in black clothing and baggy clothing for years. Now I wear what is comfortable, but I'm only marginally more comfortable with revealing my body since I gained back some of the huge amount that I lost. I do enjoy v-necks a little more now, though. 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? My peers before were all as dorky and weird as me. All of us were undergoing very awkward metamorphoses. I did wear less blue Debbie Gibson eyeshadow than most.

1. Have you ever worn fake or kiddie makeup before?
No. 2. How old were you when you first started wearing real grown-up makeup? I used to stop at my best friend's house on the way to school to put on her Maybelline cake mascara. It came in a tiny red box and you'd add water (we'd spit on it!) to a tiny brush. I was about 14 when I started using it. 3. Compared to now, how much makeup more or less makeup did you wear? It was mascara only until I was about 18. After my first child (I was 25) I began to wear more makeup. 4. How old were you when you got your first real bra? 13 for the trainer. About 14 or so for a real bra. 5. How old were you when you got your first pushup bra? 30. 6. Compared to now, how did you dress back then? I was into the preppie look throughout most of my teens, after 18 very sexy. 7. What about your peers? What did they think about your changing looks? Did they have their own changing looks as well? I moved out of the area when my style/look changed, so I don't really know. __________________

Oh, yeah...missed the "how do you dress now" question.
Back then, I wore jeans and a t-shirt. Now...well, I still wear jeans, but now I prefer tank tops. I'm also much more likely to wear dresses and skirts now (but still not on a regular basis.)
