Being bald, and the importance of hair.
A couple weeks ago there was a benefit going on at one of the local bars, called St.Baldricks. For some crazy reason I decided to raise some money and have my head shaved for the cause. I had the longest hair there, and for that reason they made a huge deal about me chopping it all off. Anyways I never realized before how important my hair was to me! I used to hide behind my hair and now I feel naked and insecure. I was just wondering if any of you ladies have done anything like this and how do you get over your own feelings of insecurity about your looks?

I shaved my hair off once...it was maybe a 1/2" or so longer than yours is now. I actually kind of liked it...even though I've never been tempted to do it again, lol. I liked the way it felt under my hand, though...kind of like a short-haired dog's fur, lol.
For what its worth, I think you look beautiful. You have a very striking face and you shouldn't hide it behind your hair.

Well I didnt shave my head, but I did just cut 8 inches off it this week, shortest its ever been in my life and Im having a VERY hard time with it. seriously....I dont want people looking at me. I've always used my hair as the focal point (least I tried to) so people wouldnt really look at my face. Even when Im not over weight I have the worst chipmunk cheeks and I always feel thats what people are staring at.....its 200% worse now that I have no hair (or to ME I have no hair)
you look beautiful though bald

Never been brave enough to do it myself, but I wanted to second what mixedmedia said about you looking great without the hair. Your face deserves all that attention! And you look much more sexy and mature, in my opinion, with the new look. Give it a fair trial!

Wow, you look great with a shaved head. Wear it proudly--not many people, especially women, can get away with such a look. Like abaya and mm said, you have a beautiful face, so don't hide it Plus, with a shaved head, you can rock some awesome scarves and do-rags if you so desire.

First of all I agree that you look beautiful with a shaved head! If I did that //shudders// it would not be pretty, I have marks all over my head.
I know what you mean about 'hiding' behind your hair. I have very long wavy hair and I could never cut it. I once had to cut it about two inches below my chin because I had such extreme damage to the ends. But just remember you did it for such a worthy cause for those kids! Plus they have TONS of magazines on short hair when your hair starts to grow back that would look amazingly cute on you!

By the way, you new "cut" makes your eyes look HUGE! I seriously think you should consider a pixie cut when it grows back. In the meantime, try wearing cute hats and scarves.

Went into a hair salon one day and asked for my 5 inches-below-my-shoulders length hair to be cut down to half an inch. The stylist wouldn't do it. She asked me to have her cut my hair to a pixie-ish length and then if I still wanted it short, I could come back in a week and she would do it for free. I came back after the week and walked out with super short hair and loved it. I haven't grown my hair out past my shoulders since.
Your new 'do looks really good! It will be wonderful as summer hits.

Honestly - your hair was masking your true beauty. Really - you're gorgeous!
It is interesting how hair defines us. I have never shaved my head, but I have chopped it off a couple of times. Always felt fresh, clean, and good. Made me feel perky and light to have super short hair. But there is a difference between getting a cute, short styled cut vs. a shave. I'm not sure I could handle your extreme!

Wow! I have to go along with the Ladies of this Lounge... you look lovely. Your eyes really shine with the super short hair, and you've got this awesome vibe going. I hate to make the reference, because I SO don't want you to take it the wrong way, but you remind me of the alien from the very first Star Trek movie. This is a compliment.
I'm a geek. I can't help it. She was one of my very first girl crushes. And you're prettier than she is.

Yeah, like everyone else, I think you look really pretty - with or without long hair. And good for you for doing something like that in the first place!
I've never gone bald, but I recently got a really short hair cut, not on purpose. The stylist did exactly what I didn't want her to do. So, I feel you. I felt very insecure and I didn't even want to go out in public. I still had SOME hair left so I got really expensive extentions... and that helped. But they're about ready to come out and I'm worried because I know my hair isn't grown back enough to look good. But like I said, you still look beautiful! |

You do look really great with the shaved look. It takes a strong face to pull that off, but you've got it!
As for me, I've never gone completely bald but one day I decided I wanted a faux hawk and I ended up with hair about an inch long. It's still only about four inches and I'm having a real hard time growing it out. Watch out, you'll get used to having it short and never let it grow out!

I have short hair too, and like you, before this it was very long - past my shoulder blades.
I didn't realize this at the time, but my hair was limiting me. I have very thick but fine hair, so it's prone to frizzing and it took FOREVER to do in the morning if I wanted it to look the way that I liked it to look. Who knows how many potentially productive hours I spent messing around with my hair. There were also certain activities I avoided at certain times, because I knew if I planned to look presentable after that, it would be another long session of dealing with my hair after that. And honestly, I never even really liked it. I'd just always had it long, so I always kept it long. Even as a teen I wanted short hair and my over-controlling mother would never let me try it, so long it was. I think that once your hair grows out a bit and you get used to short hair you're going to really like it. It takes a lot less time to do, you can try different styles and if you don't like one, it grows out in no time, and you might just notice a spike in your self confidence if you learn to rely on YOU rather than hair to interact with people. |

I just have to third everyone else's opinion here. I couldn't do it, I had mine cut short recently and about cried once I got out of the salon.
You look beautiful hon, don't change a thing. You sorta remind me of Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta after V shaves her head in the "torture champer." Not a flattering description, and I apologize, but Natalie is so beautiful, and so are you! (In other words, that's a compliment. =) ) Hold your head up high, not many women can pull this off!

I have to say thank you. My mom was diagnosed with cancer last year, and I can tell you that one of the hardest things for cancer patients to deal with is "looking sick." I know it seems strange, but my mom's wig really helped boost her self-confidence and get her through chemo.
So, thank you; I know what it means to the kids who got your hair. And I know it's been said, but you look gorgeous with short hair. You were pretty before, but now you're stunning. Thanks again! |

I am sooo jelouse. I have the biggest love hate relationship with my hair. It takes so much work and when it doesn't look good, I feel incredibly ugly no matter what.
However, honestly, I think you look better bald. Your eyes just look so big and feminine. I love your look. I'm so jealous of people who can pull off the bald/practically bald look. I really wish I could be bald. I think it would make my life so much simpler. |

It's wonderful that you donated to such a worthy cause. I really admire you for your bravery in doing this. I don't think you should feel insecure. You look gorgeous. In my opinion, I honestly think you look better without the hair than with the hair. Now you can see your big beautiful eyes and full lips.
