Welcome New Member! I'd like to show you some cool things you can do here....
I'm going to take time every so often to show off some of the new things that this site does. We worked hard in upgrading the system and making modifications for better interaction and usabilty. (zzzZZzzZZZzzzzzz...)
Basically, there is some really neat things you can do here that I'll try to share on a regular basis. The important thing to note is that my example will always have 2 spaces to remove behind the first bracket. Those should not be there when you want to use the bbcode. I'll start with some tame things because it's only the beginning of the show. [ GOOGLE]Apple pie[ /GOOGLE] bbcode allows you to put the search window right on the post. Apple pie [ WIKI]Apple Pie[ /WIKI] bbcode allows you to link directly to Wikipedia. Apple Pie -----Added 24/7/2008 at 04 : 45 : 41----- Fan mail already... I didn't think anyone would PM me. I figured they'd just ask here. But I'm game for the PM. Quote:
type your words Pay the Writer and highlight them, and click the WEB LINK button. It will popup a small window for the URL; paste in http:// youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE. you should wind up with [ url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE]Pay the Writer[ /url] For images, you upload your pictures to a site like Photobucket.com or Flickr.com and paste the URL and then click on the EMBED IMAGE button. [ IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v141/cynthetiq/7-24-20084-11-37PM.png[ /IMG] But here are a couple of really cool things that the site does for you automatically. Take the Youtube URL and put it right into your post http:// youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE will get you and automatic embed like below. http://youtube.com/watch?v=mj5IV23g-fE It will only do that for some sites (about 155 and growing,) but for all sites, it will pick up the window title and convert the URL into the words. So if I put in http: //www.cnn. com/ 2008/LIVING/personal/07/24/rs.time.for.yourself/index.html I wind up with How to grab more time for you - CNN.com automatically.

For Firefox users, another way to accomplish what Community Member #1 wants to achieve is the Make Link extension. You can right-click on a page to generate a perfectly-formatted URL link to paste here, using the page title and page URL. Or, you can select some text before the right-click, and that text becomes the link title.

Let's talk about harnessing the power of the internet to get people to read your posts!
If you ever write a lovely post here on the TFP and are feeling quite proud of yourself, you don't have to just WAIT for people to read it. Here are a few ways to get publicity for your post: 1. Use the Bookmarks links at the bottom of the thread. Digg, del.icio.us & StumbleUpon are social bookmarking sites that will attract users to your links, depending on the appeal they have to other people. The more people who use these features, the more people who are more likely to check out the links. Simply click on the icons and follow the instructions to distribute the link across the internet. 2. Use your blog as a recap of your posting. Its totally acceptable to use your blog to promote the posts that you make on the general forum. Every 10 minutes, the "featured blog" on the main blog page will rotate and you might find that your post is now being viewed by everyone hitting the page at that time. That's a good way to call attention to your great post. 3. Use the tagging feature. Also featured at the bottom of each thread is a section for Tags. If you click on "Edit Tags" you will be able to add tags to the thread. Tags are words or phrases that are relevant to the content of the thread. What tags do is link threads with similar content together. So, if someone is looking at a different thread on a similar subject to yours, they can click on one of the tags and your thread will show as a common tagged thread. If the subject is popular enough, it will show up in the tag cloud which allows even more access to your threads. 4. Link to blogs/sites that utilize trackbacks/linkbacks Some blogs have a feature called either trackbacks or linkbacks. When a website links to their blog post, it can detect the traffic that comes from that website and then puts a link back to the site on their page. The end result is a two-way link between both sites. Essentially, by linking to that blog, the blog will link back to your post. Hope you all take full advantage of these tips! They only work if people use them.

How to share your last.fm widget
Here's how you do it: From your Last.fm profile page, go all the way to bottom to Resources. Hit the link for Widgets. Hit the button that says Show Me the Code. Within the first few lines of text you should see a number like this: 6fb0c82741154ba2d1b5c62268fbca66 Code the number like this: [lasfm=yourlast.fmusername]6fb0c82741154ba2d1b5c62268fbca66[/lastfm] ...don't forget to include the 't' in last. and you will wind up with something like this: And here's the perfect place to share it: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/general...aylist-us.html

You'll figure out most of it along the way - just focus on reading and replying to posts. If you happen to hit the chat when people are active, just say you're new and ask for help.

threads - you are in one right now!!!! look out behind you! really this is a thread, the whole discussion right here. Each individual entry is a post. The first entry of the thread is called the OP or opening/original post.
bbcodes, those are a bit trickier, but they are how you can change the function of your post, to make bold, italics, underline, different colors or even the different things here. take your time, if we sit and explain it to you like in school, you'll forget most of it. I know that I do. I forget all the different functions that came with the forum, and then the modifcations I made that peoeple asked for, and the ones that I thought would be useful. enjoy your visit!

Yes, I forgot all about it. I had gotten an email from Mixwit about their demise and how they were shutting down. He was hopeful that they could operate in some limited fashion even just as an archive of sorts.

It would be payo, but 15 posts isn't a lot of posts to contribute. This 15 post limit accomplishes a couple of things. First it helps us weed out spammers. Second it helps us get people who truly are willing to contribute to discussions by trying to hit the 15 post mark with good thoughtful posting. We monitor the new registrations here and see if they are just running up post counts so that they can get access to posting links. If we find they are spammers, we nip them in the bud quickly. If they are trying to contribute thoughtful content, we encourage them the post the 15 to unlock the ability.
This place is all about contribution and if you continue to post past 15, there are different areas that open up at different posting spots. I spend a lot of time making sure that the back end gets useful mods that help the community contribute more. I don't see how 15 posts is so far out of reach. Also, I don't see how posting internal links makes it any better or useful than achieving the full unlock at 15.

What, exactly, is your signature? Thanks.
---------- Post added at 08:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 AM ---------- Oops! I think I just found out. I filled in the field a couple of days ago, but it didn't add it to my post, so I thought it must be something else. Sorry! I'm still learning my way around the sight.

At the risk of sounding like a dumb-ass, how do you go about quoting all or part of someone's message, in your post. I clicked on 'quote message in reply', but nothing happened. Sorry, but I'm a slow learner Thank you.

Using the green/default skin, you should see 2 buttons in the lower right of a post. One says "quote", the other says "quote+". If you want to quote multiple people, toggle the "quote+" button on for each of those posts. When you reach the last one you want to quote, hit "quote". That will take you to a new screen where you'll see each of the posts where you toggled "quote+" on.
If you just want to quote one person, click the quote button. It will take you to a new screen with the quote already embedded in the reply box. If you want to manually quote someone, you can use the [command] and [/command} box. Just insert "quote" (without the quotes), put the text between the two commands and replace the "}" with "]". It should work just fine.
