good day, dober dan, guten tag, góðan daginn etc

(seemed to not go through. hope it doesn´t end up posted 6 times...)

*sigh* i already see myself spending too much time here. i´m not even sure where to start given this place seems to cover everything under the sun and be full of people who appear to speak their mind without fear of prejudice. this could be fun.

had a good look around from cars and music sections to the philosophy, sexuality, the photography section (i have so many of the wft photos accumulated on my pooter...) i have to admit to peeking into the ladies lounge (i promise i´ll only lurk occasionally :þ) and even found the 2 sided thread about the breakup where both parties vented in this very forum. it´s already well past my bedtime but thought i´d get something down before i head off to sleep (have to get up early to with my little bro a happy b-day back in au.) as you will have noticed by now i have a love parentheses and use them liberally.

anyway, me: i always love describing myself as "male, middle class and white" which is all true but as always there´s always more of a story behind it. lived my 1st 27 years in australia then went on a (typically australian) european stint spending some time in austria and slovenia before finding myself in iceland. and i´m still here a year later. and it looks like i´ll be here a while yet, if i get accepted into my masters. my taste in music leaves ppl scratching their heads (although i´ve just come off the back of living for a month and a 1/2 with my closest musical neighbour on last.fm...) and my taste in cars always raised an eyebrow (especially back in australia) since i love nothing more than driving a volvo family sedan. no matter how hard i try i just can´t get into beefed up american muscle cars or japanese coupés that drive like they´re been launched from a slingshot. ok, i´m already rambling (something i´m good at.) what else to say? er, i like cheese?

sleep time now i think...

Velkominn! Your Góðan Daginn caught my eye... we've got a few Icelandophiles on TFP, and ktspktsp (my husband) and I currently live in Iceland as well. (Have I got it right that you're an Aussie living in Iceland?) Perhaps we'll even meet you in real life, sometime!! (We had a 4-person TFP meetup in RVK last fall, which was fun.) And yes, I like to use parentheses liberally as well.

Góðan Daginn!

I just got my bank statement from Glitner yesterday... too many charges at Ísbúðin during our last visit to Iceland.

Welcome!

..and thanks

i´m not used to people getting my really subtle hints but i figured people would pick up on góðan daginn since it´s so common here. i also figured from looking around this place that many of the icelanders i know would fit right in here. i do wonder where in iceland the TFPers live and how many there are here. myself, i´m in the vesturbær part of reykjavík in an old kindergaten just off the street which would have to have my favourite name, bræðrarborgarstígur. i´ve lived in this part of town now for only 3 months but it´s my all-time fave already due to the quiet i get (i used to live on hverfisgata *right* in the middle of downtown...)

i´ve always been curious about icelanders and icecream. where i´m from icecream is strictly reserved for temps above 25° (i have no idea about farenheit...) and here they eat it in the middle of winter by the bucketload. i swear these people are crazy.

Welcome to the TFP!

For what it's worth, I drive a '94 940 Volvo station wagon (with turbocharger). It may make me look like a soccer mom, but it hauls balls when necessary. I'm something of a Volvo snob, but the fact that I've only ever owned Volvos might play a small role in that. So, no, you're definitely not alone, and you're definitely not weird or odd. I love driving my mom-mobile.

you need to clean your living room (j/k) are you on bræðrarborgarstígur? i´m on holtsgata less than a block down. i´m getting used to everything happening near me. it seems everyone is moving next to me.

i went and looked at a 94 850 wagon but the price was a bit too high for me so the other day i picked up a 93 850 sedan. i had a 740 wagon briefly back in au and i took it camping for a week and it was awesome to sleep in the back - juet perfect for a matress. the folding seats in the 850 are giving me some hope

you´re married to a waterfall?? (a beautiful one at that)

i have thu night off although i´m meeting friends. perhaps they´ll be convinced to come (at least they´ll understand the icelandic - mine is still horrible)

in answer to the last question: a hell of a lot of time on a plane. the skyr (and lately skyr drykkur) makes it all worthwhile. i´m yet to meet a person not partial to kremkex but i´m trying to eat healthy :s

sorry... it's the scandinavian house here in NYC... didn't mean to confuse...

the wife loves Iceland with OZ a close 2nd. I proposed to my wife at Skogafoss in Nov. 2000 on my first trip to Iceland.

we live in NYC and travel to Iceland about 1 time per year if we can. My Icleandic is horrible....

Bjossi er kennari = Bjossi is the teacher.

that's about it after taking 2 sections of classes in Icelandic. But I can read better than I can speak, but that's always the case for me.

so you just up and left Oz, no job no love? just decided to move to Iceland?

bjossi er kennarinn. believe me i´m not too much better. my favourite phrase is still "getur þú talar ensku?" followed closely by my 2nd favourite phrase "ég er bara heimskur útlendingur!"

guess i´d finished uni and figured this was my best chance to get out and about. and it would appear that i have stayed out and about...

fickle weather. i just drove home 10 mins ago and it was fine and after reading the last post i look out the window to see snow. guess i didn´t come here for a carribean summer....

if you´re only 2 blocks away you´ve probably already seen (more likely heard) me coming and going in what´s left of my old green vw golf. the trip to aldrei fór ég suður wasn´t kind to it. thankfully the volvo is a bit quieter and in much better shape. next time you see the golf out please salute, i´ll be driving it to hringrás which as we know here is a one-way trip...
