I was just wondering; what are the legalities for the purchase, sale, or possession of a few cannabis seeds in California? I see sites online that sell them, and I'm not even sure if they sell to the U.S., but would it be illegal for a California resident to buy from them?

I'm just asking 'cause I want to try cultivating a small plant for education (learning how to properly grow and harvest) and of course personal use.

Lemme put it this way: cultivation is a felony in California. I don't think buying seeds would go over well with any officials.

Thanks. My friend was telling me that seeds are legal to possess, but of course he hails from the UK (been in the U.S. for two years). That's why I decided to come here and ask the experts.

His logic was that as long as it's not marijuana (grown), they were legal.

I live in a California college town where a lot of small-time entrepreneurs market or manufacture hemp-based products -- hemp oil, hemp soaps, etc. Some of them bring in have brought in hemp seeds from Canada that have been certified as sterilized through some process, for use in manufacture. But I think that even then, there's been trouble.

As for the real thing, possession of seeds is illegal, as is growing marijuana for personal use. Although it really depends on where you live. In the town I live in, I don't think anybody's been busted for having a pot plant and grow light in the closet since before the Reagan administration.

But.... to let you know how sick law enforcement can get on such things... there's a hydroponics supply store in this area that used to be just out of town, in the county. Of course a large proportion of the customers were growing weed in their house, in garages or wherever. The county sheriff figured this out and put a regular stakeout on the store. If anybody made big buys or came back regularly, the sheriffs would investigate, get a search warrant, and bust 'em. I think once or twice they raided people growing _legal_ exotic plants. There was a lot of criticism, but the sheriffs wouldn't stop. Finally, the hydroponics store moved inside the city limits, away from the sheriff. And in this town, the cops don't care.

Moral: some people say marijuana makes you paranoid... but sometimes _they_ really are out to get you.

I always thought the stuff in high times was false weed (other than the pictures, of course). And of all mainstream media, wouldn't high times have the highest chance of being under full, constant investigation?

Marijuana, although legal in CA, is still federally illegal. But, to answer your question, I'm not sure. Frankly, I think it's SO stupid that it's still illegal! You know, the only reason they made it illegal in the first place was because in the 1920's the cotton industry was afraid that hemp would surpass cotton in revenue, so basically greed and money made marijuana illegal!

la petite moi: I believe the alcohol and tobacco industry had a say in it, too. Although I still drink and once in awhile I'll throw in a bit of tobacco when rolling, if I were to pick only one, I'd choose ganja. I drink only sociably, or when my depression kicks in way too hard (only done that twice). I only smoke tobacco when I have whacky tabacky to throw in it. I smoke buddha almost daily. Of course alcohol and tobacco industries would oppose it.

Actually only partially decriminalized. You get a fine for posession of under 28g of it, and any more than that is jail time (though only a misdemeanor).

purchasing/trading seeds is quite small to the buyer. Often the worst that
happens is that the seeds are intercepted and the buyer receives a letter
from customs explaining that illegal contraband was found in mail addressed
to them and that they may contest it (which one should NEVER do). Always
have seeds sent regular first class mail to minimize legal risks.
