PETA == The Iraqi Information Minister?

These guys are actually starting to be amusing to me, in the same way Baghdad Bob (RIP) was.

BTW, the pic isn't the billboard, but from PETA's site http://www.jesusveg.com.

Clergy: Veggie Jesus Ad Is Sacrilegious

Thu Apr 17, 9:21 PM ET Add AP - Feature Stories to My Yahoo!

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Christian and Jewish clergy say a billboard that promotes vegetarianism by claiming "Jesus was the prince of peas" is historically inaccurate and sacrilegious.

The billboard includes a picture of Jesus with an orange slice in place of a halo and was erected by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, to coincide with Passover and Easter.

PETA's Bruce Friedrich said the campaign is meant to provoke the thought that if people are eating meat, they are promoting cruelty to animals.

"The way that animals are treated on factory farms and slaughterhouses is egregiously cruel and mocks God," Friedrich said.

But Rabbi David Ostrich of Temple Beth-el, said historical evidence indicates that Jesus, like other Jews of the time, was a meat eater. He said a ritual part of the Passover meal was a lamb slaughtered in the Temple in Jerusalem.

I support PETA's cause, but that advert's just silly.

These people are just dumb. I think I'm gonna slaughter some meat later today and stuff my belly full, and I'll have a big greasy smile on my face while I do it.

I would support petas cause IF their cause was hey we don't eat meat... we seem to like think you might to.. But their cause is more along the lines of "hey we don't eat meat and eventully none of you will either."

Crazy

I wish PETA wasn't so set on offending people because I really do agree with treating animals properly. They need to relax a little bit and turn down the shock-value knob for now. Maybe if they tried to educate rather than tell people what to think they'd be more successful. The best thing about their webpage is the celebrity quotes. Quotes from people like Ja Rule saying they're not eating beef(even though i'll bet he's not a vegetarian) are much better than offending someone so much they'll hate you and do the opposite. Any parent will tell you that the more you push someone to do something the harder they will push back.

Honestly, though-

The reason people don't belive eating meat is ethical is that they say Animals have rights to life- IF so then why can animals eat eachother?

answer: Because they HAVE to in-order to survive. Humans, on the other hand do not

Reply: I wont argue about the fact that humans DO need meat, but just on the fact that it seems contridictory to ever belive something is right only because there is no other way? It seems, then, we should give animals training in eating vegitables.

But why do people think animals have rights?
Answer: Because they can feel. What is different between them and us
Reply: Intellegence and ability to reason.
Objection: But don't retarded babies have rights? Because that criteria leaves them out!

Finally, the debate goes to the real knockouts-

Retarded children have rights because they are humans, and most humans are rational.
Reply: Thats specisism, which is the same as nazi facism
obj: No it is not- racisim is not specisism. It seems ok to think that animals are less than my species is
reply obj: But African Americans were considered animals and they were enslaved and tortured because of specisim-

While that conclusion sounds very moving, think about it this way-
Do Cows have the rights of a Black man or woman? Should they?

And one last argument-

The reason something has rights is because it can exercise the rights as well as desire and need rights. This is called being a moral agent- But trust me, a lion or a cow isn't thinking about what it should and should not do- only what it might eat.,

This is all not to say animals have no rights. BUt I will say the only rights they have are not self evident like our rights. They are simply rights given to them by people. Torture isn't allowed not because an animal has a natural right to not be tortured, but rather, because Humanity belives that animals have pain, and sensless pain for any creature is unnacceptable.

If one wants to say that death, early, is wrong for any animal than I say this is rediculous.

LAST POINT:

If someone is Pro-Choice and Pro-Vegatarian, they need to think about that. What gives an animal rights that an unborn child doesn't have? Eating meat and aborting babies are both, usually done for the same reason: Convienience. So its not ok to eat an animal but it is ok to kill an unborn babie.

Yeah, it almost sounds like PETA's never opened a Bible...

I think this is ridiculous. PETA's guerilla, hardcore tactics do nothing to attract new members to their group. It's fine and dandy that they want to shock people, but that isn't going to get people to stop eating meat. In fact, I would think that quite a few Christians will look at said ad campaign as sacreligious. I say we have a barbeque in response. Mmm. Ribs.

Does anyone hear watch futurama? All I can think of now is the episode that had M.E.A.T. (Mankind for ethical animal treatment) and they taught a lion to eat tofu (que pan to lion who is skin and bones and coughing) ah good times...
