15 year old dies as a result of kissing boyfriend.

http://www.cbc.ca/montreal/story/qc-kiss20051125.html

The story:
Kiss may have been fatal for teen with nut allergy
CBC News

A 15-year-old girl in Quebec's Saguenay region is believed to have died as a result of an allergic reaction to her boyfriend's kiss. An autopsy will be performed on the body of the teen, who was allergic to peanuts. Officials said she did not consume the nuts, but they believe she had a reaction to kissing her boyfriend, who had eaten peanut butter. The apparently fatal kiss was last Sunday in Jonquière, Que. Although an adrenalin shot was administered almost immediately, the teen did not recover, the Montreal newspaper La Presse reports. The girl was rushed to hospital, where she died after suffering respiratory failure. Her death was confirmed Wednesday.

****

I read this today and thought it was amazingly tragic. I had no idea an allergic reaction could be this bad.

Well, the question becomes: Did this guy know his girlfriend was allergic to peanuts?

If he did, then he's an idiot for eating them anywhere near his girlfriend.

If he didn't, then this is quite the accident. I think i'd go nuts (no pun intended) if this happened to me.

The question i'm wondering is... if she was that allergic to peanutbutter, how did she make it through kindergarten-grade3?

Not to be an ass or anything, but I think it's a miracle she made it that far.
In retrospect, her peanut threatened days were probably nearing their end. If not for the kiss she mighta been home free with a long life

when my son was 2.....his grandpa gave him a little taste of peanut butter.

within seconds.......his face and hands blew up like a ballon,we rushed him to the hospital, told then it was PB....they gave him a shot.........and then the onslaught of tests for the next few years insued.

poor kid was like a pin cushion........and we found out he's allergic to quite a few foods.

so it was up to us to inform the school of his allergies.

and nowadays.....the schools are more than aware.

it can happen just like that................tragic story

I've got a friend like her. She is severely allergic to a number of different things including some types of alcohol, pine cones, certain types of wood and foods. I can't keep track of it all. The wood thing is weird because she can die on a visit to a lumber yard without ever touching the wood. I doubt he knew a peanut butter sandwich could be fatal.

I have a friend who's peanut allergy is so sensitive, she had to wait for a different flight because they had loaded dinners with peanut butter chews for dessert onto the plane, and the traces of peanut in the recirculated air could be enough to cause an allergic reaction. Nut allergies are rediculous.

As big a fan of dark humor as I am, there is a difference between "dark humor" and "just posting a joke because you want to be funny, not because that's how you cope".

Yeah, allergic reactions can very easily be this bad, especially allergies to nuts. For some reason, they seem to be very fast-acting and potent. In all likelihood, he had no idea of her allergy. At 15, she definitely knows enough to stay away from them herself, but I highly doubt she'd bother to tell the boyfriend. It's not like anyone would see THIS coming, even if he knew. Normally, as long as you yourself don't consume the nut, this type of second-hand exposure would be mild or "bad", but likely not "severe", or deadly.

This is General Discussion, not Tilted Nonsense... so everyone who posted because they thought they were funny, and not to take part in the discussion, your post is now gone.

It just seems a bit strange to me that someone could actually DIE from second-hand peanut butter exposure.

I would have never thought about kissing a person and having an allergic reaction to something on their lips unless they slathered it on there and then (without cleaning) proceeded to kiss you.

Guess this goes to show how unpredictable life can be.

As for the dark humor... it's my way of dealing with sad things. I'm sure the girl is among the honored dead. No one deserves a death like this. At least she kissed someone she loved last (I hope).

I'm sure the kiss went a little past the lips. Even if there was no tongue, the result is still perfectly realistic, they're that bad sometimes.

And...

Dark humor to deal with sadness is one thing... to post just to make a remark because you think it's funny, is another...

It is so scary when something like this happens. Makes you realize that you never know what can happen. Hug your family today. My heart goes out to the girls family and her boyfriend.

She made it this far because her parents were probably informed about the situation and made arrangements with her schools. If my daughter was in a class with a child allergic to peanut butter, she was told she could not bring it to school at all. Peanut allergy is something you find out rather early in life, and the hard way. Most kids are given PB&J at a young age. It is a hard allergy to deal with, since the outcome can be so deadly.

I understand that peanut allergies are so bad that if someone walked through a room with something that was canned where there were also peanuts and waited half an hour or so and then the allergic person came in they could still have a reaction. The reaction itself is not based on how much nut they are exposed to but how strongly they react. One nut second hand can be as bad as a vat of peanut butter. Hard to believe her bf wouldn't have heard about her allergy at some point and sure he wouldn't have thought about kissing transferring it, but she should have. Poor love and so tragic. Years of therapy for the poor bf too!

A number of years ago, I did a play with a girl who apparently had a peanut allergy. I had no idea until she freaked out after seeing me about to unwrap a peanut butter cup. We had a kissing scene, and she informed me that even just a simple kiss could cause her lots of problems. I barely knew anything about peanut allergies before talking to her, let alone the extent. What a tragic story.

Most schools in the Toronto (Ontario) area, and I am sure in Quebec have a peanut free policy. As parents, we are not supposed to send the kids to school with any peanut products. Not that that is fool proof, older kids often go to the store at lunch time and eat chocolate bars (for example Reeses Peanut Butter cups).

But it is conceivable to go through school well protected. Plus, at risk kids are identified to the school staff, and they have epi-pens at the ready for the teachers that have to deal with it.

The saddest part is the number of people who are not aware of food allergies. They can be dangerous to fatal as this story shows. I feel that all people around an allergy sufferer should be made aware of what can happen and what to do if it happens.

Avoiding A Kiss Of Death

NEW YORK, Nov. 29, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) A 15-year-old girl from Canada, Christina Desforges, died last week after kissing her boyfriend. He had eaten a peanut butter sandwich nine hours earlier and she was allergic to peanuts.

Having an allergic reaction from kissing is actually not uncommon, The Early Show medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay explains. A study of nut allergies a few years ago found about 5 percent of people in the study had an allergic reaction through kissing.

If you have a food allergy it can happen easily. A food allergy is when the body's immune system reacts against a specific component in a food that is not normally harmful to the body.

It doesn't take very much at all to provoke a reaction from the immune system, so even a tiny trace of food on a person's lips or mouth could be risky. Peanut allergies specifically can be easily triggered.

About 1.5 million people in the United States are severely allergic to peanuts and 50 to 100 people die every year because of a peanut allergy.

Common symptoms of a food allergy include flushing, wheezing, hives or a skin rash.

More severe reactions can include vomiting, difficulty breathing, a drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and even a very severe reaction called anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock, which can result in death. That's what happened to Desforges.

Many people with peanut allergies do tend to have severe cases, but you can have an allergic reaction from a kiss with any severe food allergy.

Peanuts and shellfish are very common allergies. Other foods that make up most food allergies are: milk, eggs, wheat, soy, and other tree nuts such as walnuts, pecans and almonds.

The best way to avoid a food allergy is to avoid the food that causes it. So when it comes to kissing, you should remind loved ones to wash their faces and brush their teeth if they know they've been eating something you're allergic to. And don't forget to read ingredients — a food you think is perfectly safe might not be.

Desforges was given a shot of adrenaline almost immediately, but it didn't save her. That's an unusually severe reaction, but it can happen.

If you think you have a food allergy but aren't sure, talk to a doctor who can help you be prepared by having an EpiPen on hand or other medications in case of an emergency.

Peanut kiss did not kill Quebec teen: coroner

A Quebec teen with a severe peanut allergy did not die from kissing her boyfriend following his snack of peanut butter, a coroner has confirmed.

Michel Miron says the sudden death of fifteen-year-old Christina Desforges in November 2005 was not caused by a peanut butter sandwich.

The tragedy made headlines around the world.

Miron would not reveal the official cause of the teenager's death because he said he hadn't yet submitted his final report and is still waiting on some test results.

But Miron said he wanted to speak out before the case was mentioned in a forthcoming initiative by the Canadian Association of Food Allergies.

"The Canadian Association of Food Allergies intended to use the Desforges case to launch an education campaign," he told Saguenay's Le Quotidien newspaper.

"I had to tell them the cause of death was different than first believed."

Miron also said the teen, who lived in Saguenay, Que., did not receive a shot of adrenalin immediately after being kissed by her boyfriend.

Earlier reports suggested the shot hadn't penetrated her skin.

Miron said scientific journals had contacted him questioning the use of the adrenalin shot and how it was injected.

He said the teen did not use her syringe to give herself a shot of adrenalin because she didn't have an allergic reaction to peanut butter.

Saguenay is about 250 kilometres north of Quebec City.

Girl Died From Asthma, Not Peanut Butter Kiss
By LES PERREAUX, AP

MONTREAL (May 12) - The infamous peanut butter kiss originally thought to have killed a Quebec girl had nothing to do with her death, a coroner revealed Thursday.

Christina Desforges died from an asthma attack after "physical exertion" with her boyfriend, not from an allergic reaction to a peanut butter-laced kiss, said coroner Michel Miron.

The 15-year-old girl stopped breathing in the early morning hours of Nov. 20, 2005, after kissing her boyfriend. He had eaten two pieces of toast with peanut butter about nine hours earlier.

The initial suspicion that lingering peanut allergens triggered an allergic reaction was wrong, Miron said. Instead, he blamed a sudden, severe asthma attack following physical activity with her boyfriend.

"Nine hours passed between the time when the young man ate his two toasts and 3 a.m. when he kissed Christina," Miron said in announcing his findings.

"A recent study shows at the end of an hour, there is no allergen left in the saliva. It's not very probable that peanut butter is implicated. Nine hours later, I don't believe it and studies show the same thing."

The girl had spent hours at a party with smokers at a home in Saguenay, Que., when her breathing problems began. She also had smoked pot in the previous hours, Miron added, another factor that can cause problems for asthma sufferers.

Around 3 a.m., Desforges told her boyfriend she was having trouble breathing. She went in the basement to get her inhaler and had trouble getting down the stairs, waking a second teenage boy with her wheezing and stumbling.

"They helped Christina go up the stairs and they decided to go outside," Miron said in Saguenay, about 250 kilometres north of Quebec City.

"She collapsed and stopped breathing. The 911 recording is not funny to hear. You can imagine, two young boys 15 years old dealing with a young girl in front of them, not breathing."

The boys tried to resuscitate Desforges and she was taken to hospital, but the coroner estimates her brain was deprived of oxygen for 25 to 30 minutes. She was taken off life support nine days later.

Desforges was allergic to nuts and peas among other foods and had suffered reactions as a young child to cashews and meatball stew.

The girl also suffered asthma from a young age, carrying an inhaler to deal with respiratory problems that popped up occasionally.

In August 2005, Desforges went to a local emergency room to deal with a severe asthma attack after spending the day in a house with two cats, a dog and smokers.

Asthma kills about 500 Canadians every year, according to the Asthma Society of Canada.

About three million Canadians suffer from the disease, a chronic inflammation of the airways that may be triggered by an over-sensitive immune system.
lastest update; death from asthma attack

maybe kids can eat PB&J at school again... dunno why it was banned from some schools to begin with...
