Where's the "every now and then" option? I go in there from time to time, but it's not because I have to, and it's not like I hate it or anything. I'd just rather post on TFP or play Battlefield 2 than carry on a live conversation.

Sure thing! I often don't post in the forums because better points have already been made, or I don't have the relevant experience to contribute. So I find the tfp Chat a great way to take part and get to know the community. You're all a real swell bunch!

It is nice to see some new faces in there, though. Liven things up a bit so shesus doesn't have to keep playing strip trivia.

There is a TFP Chat Guide in Tilted Newbies. It walks you through setting up mIRC and XChat so you even have a choice of client

I always leave chat open and drop in whenever I notice something interesting going on.

EDIT: looks like the pics for the mIRC tutorial are no longer working. The XChat tutorial I added is still working however. I'm always open for suggestions to make it more clear

I will (though don't hold me to a date) chat in there some time. I used to a few years ago, and then sort of fell off the whole IRC thing, but now that classes are starting back up, I need better ways to distract myself, so I'll probably try reinstalling xChat and giving it a go in the near future.

I voted "No, too shy", but the real answer is closer to "No, not my thing". I've never used IRC, IM, or any other instant-writing communication style. I prefer to read and respond at my own pace; I like the message-board style of communications.

While this is gernerally my take on things, I have found that I enjoy going in to this particular chat room from time to time... I am mostly too busy to visit but when I have a moment or two I like to pop in and say hi...

The difference for me, between TFP chat and other chats, is that I know most of the people in chat already. It's like popping into the pub for a quick one before heading home.

often just idling while doing other stuff, but sometimes i'll make an ass of myself ...
..er, sometimes i'll talk. yeah

it is a good way to get to know people - it feels a bit closer to irl than the board.
more like 'talking' and less like posting.
since my 'social life' is currently pretty much all here, it helps me feel like less of a loser, i think

we need more people in there! don't be shy, people, it's fun!
