TFP Chat Guide in Tilted Newbies. It walks you through setting up mIRC and XChat so you even have a choice of client
I always leave chat open and drop in whenever I notice something interesting going on.
EDIT: looks like the pics for the mIRC tutorial are no longer working. The XChat tutorial I added is still working however. I'm always open for suggestions to make it more clear
