University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked top party school
Quote:

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison topped a list of the nation's best party schools released Monday, despite a decade-long effort by the school to reduce its reputation for heavy drinking.

Meanwhile, Brigham Young University led "stone cold sober" schools for the eighth straight year.

The rankings are based on survey responses regarding alcohol and drug use, hours of study each day, and the number of students in fraternities and sororities.

Schools often criticize the list, while the American Medical Association has urged Princeton Review to stop putting it out, saying it legitimizes students' drinking.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley dismissed the report as "junk science that results in a day of national media coverage."

The chairman of the campus student government, though, said many students would take pride in the ranking considering the university's other reputation as a top academic institution.

U.S. News and World Report ranked UW-Madison No. 34 among national universities in its annual survey last week.

"It just shows that we work hard but we play hard also," said Eric Varney, chair of the Associated Students of Madison.

The list -- which is not affiliated with Princeton University -- is based on online surveys of more than 110,000 college students and is included in the Princeton Review's "Best 361 Colleges."

Robert Franek, who authored the report, said students are looking for more than just a classroom experience when they pick a college.

"The mission is very simple -- to provide information to make the college search palatable for a student and all of them to find a school that's the best fit for them," he said.

How'd your school rate?

Does how a school rates, partying wise, effect your decision to go to a certain school?

I find this funny because back when I was a high school junior or senior, I looked at UWisconsin/Madison (they even offered a big chunk of cash for me to go there) visiting the campus, they got ruled out pretty quickly because Madison was just so frightfully boring...

I don't go to school but I do go to parties This list has a couple of surprises. I figured Texas would be higher up and I don't see Florida State.. FSU used to rock when it came to parties. I've been to a few parties at Va. Tech.. and wow.. how they aren't on the list.. beats me.

My school didn't rate, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing The whole "party" thing here tends to be dominated by the Greek system, and I'm not really into that whole scene. I didn't attend a frat party until I was a junior.

I think Oregon State is a school where a person can have a lot of fun if they want, whatever kind of fun that is. If you want to go out on Thirsty Thursday, there's always something going on. Whether or not it's going to be what you want is a different question. For those of us who prefer quieter gatherings, we usually have to wait for another night of the week. But the fact is you do have to look for opportunities to party. I assume at other schools that is not the case.

I chose OSU for the campus, not the parties.

Our parties at tufts used to suck eggs, we were a boring lot... head into Boston, and dang those eggheads at MIT knew how to throw a party... changed forever my opinion of engineers (smart = way way hot and oodles of fun)

Not at all surprised to see Zoo Mass on the list... that was also a happen' place.

I don't see Northwest Missouri State. Does that mean that my "First Ammendment" might actually study?

One of the things mentioned in the article, is that lists such as this especially done by Princeton Review, (Playboy, I thought, used to put one out back in the 80s), legitimizes student drinking... Does it?

yes dear, and she'll also wear very conservative clothes, listen to classical music, write home every sunday afternoon to tell you she loves you and not ask for money, and steer clear of boys until she's 35...

My jaw is hitting my desk. I went to SUNY at Albany! and it was ranked #5! Of course, I went there a long time ago (1987-1989) so maybe it was different back then. I remember there always being a frat party to go to, with $5 all you can drink.

For the first time in ages, CU (Boulder) isn't on this list. They announced it on the radio today, all sad that they weren't in the top10 (like usual). I blame it on those damn football kids who ruined it for us all with their dumb decisions..

This is a crime! An outrage! USC doesn't make the list? The single greatest university on the face of the earth isn't one of the great party schools?

Seriously, though, would this actually be a factor in anyone's choice of colleges?

I know some folks, yeah. A girl I knew left our school because it wasn't enough of a party school for her.

After hearing this, I took another hit off the beerbong and climbed the art building. She didn't know what she was talkin' about. Foo.

I noticed that most of the schools are eastern...I guess we western folk don't know know to party....

The University of Utah was not a party school compared to the rest of the nation, but compared to BYU, we were all sinning heathens who were doomed to the depths of hell.

I foresee lots of all night benders at CU-Boulder trying to regain their perptual top ten ranking.

Of course, my alma mater is IIT which might rank in the top ten nerd institutions for people with no social skills.

Hawkeyes are pretty high up there, proud to see that.

My roommates and I have been working hard to achieve that ranking.

Well, I went to a small school that liked to hide it's drinking problem...

but man, I partied at Lehigh a LOT. The best times that I can remember (and not remember) from college came from there. They're small, and not well know, but they do know how to entertain.

On the subject of this list, though, I do think that it's on the pointless side. Yes, it is sort of interesting, but it is highly biased and gives the school a bad reputation. I remember for years that Penn State was looked down upon because of heavy partying. I don't think that they really can scientifically study this to a distinct degree yet (everybody has a different definition of what a good party is) so it's still vague science on the whole.

Gee, I thought my current graduate school (Penn State) would be farther up in the ranks. #13 ain't bad, but damn, the rate at which I observe my undergrad students coming in with hangovers and/or stoned... well, I can't imagine how it is in the top 5 schools!

Personally, I'd appreciate it if we were a little farther down on the list. Might make my teaching slightly more worth it, though I do love the energy on campus. As it was, I attended a Christian undergrad school and we were probably right down there with BYU. /shivers. I guess I appreciate the party scene much more in my grad school days!!
