Sexual Orientation Poll

I searched a bit and didn't find a poll like this, so I thought I'd give it a go. Which way do you swing?

This poll is prompted partly by abaya's thread in sexuality about whether gay men feel welcome at TFP. it was an interesting discussion, but the conclusion seemed to be that there were no gay men on TFP, or at least none who would say so. I thought this would be a good chance, anonymous chance for them to make their presence known. Plus, I thought it would be interesting in general :) .

I, for one, am a straight male.

Grasshopper Green 05-28-2005 09:47 PM

There is no poll???

Grasshopper Green 05-28-2005 10:17 PM

I voted interested in men...I"ve had a few interesting and fun experiences with women, and plan on continuing to do so in the future...but I'm primarily attracted to men. Good thing for hubby ;)

tecoyah 05-29-2005 03:21 AM

Tried to vote "interested in Medusa"....wasnt there, so I settled for the next best thing

There's one openly gay/bi male that I can think of, and a few more that I've probably forgotten.

I'm a straight male, btw.

Mephisto2 05-29-2005 05:40 AM

Goodness.

Look at the poll result.

What a surprise!!

:)

I responded male interested in women. However something made me wish I was a female interested in both. And like Mephisto, I was surprised at the results thus far. I'm also surprised that people may be afraid/reluctant to disclose their sexual orientation here. Of all the forums on the Internet, this is the one that I would think people would find gay bashing to be unacceptable.

And FWIW, I wouldn't be any good at being gay because I don't care for anal sex.

One would think...and i think the TFP is a more welcoming place than most.

But, the main problem is simply lack of critical mass. If these issues come up, at least from a male perspective...there are only a few active voices to answer. there are a lot of good allies...and i'm grateful for that work, but it doesn't provide a replacement for queer participation.

Think of the kinds of questions you might expect to be answered if you posted in Tiltled Sex. Would a gay poster find a similar response and information?
Think of some of the threads posted in Politics. I understand that a "clean up" effort is currently being made, but past threads have included personal attacks on queer posters. That's going to have a consequence for queer participation here.

Yes, the TFP is more welcoming than most online communities. But that's a comparison to a pretty low standard, one that i think this community has the potential to vastly supercede. And with due respect to Seretogis (see Abaya's thread for his response on the 2nd page), i think that intentional effort is necessary. Simply put...without trying to do so, this community is not going to have queer voices here. Assuming that this place is non-discriminatory simply becuase it is not actively supressing queer voices is just not a rational assumption. Our situation in a broader culture that silences queerness is cause for us as the TFP to assume that queer voices are not automatically welcome.

FWIW: plenty of gay folks don't care much for it either.

ktspktsp 05-29-2005 07:58 AM

I think there are quite a few people who are mainly into in one gender but also slightly interested in the other one - is bicurious the right term? It would've been interesting to see those on the poll too.

rhaevyn 05-29-2005 09:45 AM

Female, interested in both, though I prefer women most of the time.

AYHJA 05-29-2005 05:16 PM

I've always been curious as to how ^^ that ^^ works...And it's always more acceptable coming from a woman, a man says that, and he's pronounced G.O.A...But a woman says it, and boy, doesn't the male mind being its escapades into the gutter..?

Zephyr66 05-29-2005 05:24 PM

Voted for male and both, as seen in my thread in tilted living about a month back. But yeah, I'm bi

present_future 05-29-2005 07:18 PM

Voted for male and interested in women (and lots of them.)

jonjon42 05-29-2005 08:38 PM

male interested in women...particularly the crazy brown eyed, blue haired one watching the screen right now ;-)

Craven Morehead 05-29-2005 10:09 PM

Hey I was number 69, my favorite number!!! :D

yabobo 05-30-2005 02:09 AM

In my teens I did many things. Wouldn't change them for the world.
At my age now the gate swings only to my wife of 23 years

I just pray that I'm never tempted for I still love the boobies of the world!
I am only human (male pig) and subject to moments of weak thought.
Wife knows how flirty I get. She has her fun too. I still get jealous. Love is really great :suave:

ironman 05-30-2005 09:06 AM

I do remember that sometime ago there was a thread started by a gay (male) member, in which he complained about TFP been not very supportive to male gay members. I can't find it, so it may have bee in a previous version of the TFP. Thing is that I've always thought that the TFP is a very liberal community who accepts anyone despite it's gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc..., as long as you have something interesting and respectfull to say. Hooray for the TFP!!!

Astrocloud 05-30-2005 12:41 PM

I doing my best to be "INTERESTED IN NEITHER" but the poll won't allow it and neither will my hormones.

This past year at school, a kid in my Photography class came out as bi, but preferring guys. He told everyone at our table. If anyone had a problem with it, they kept quiet.

K-Wise 05-30-2005 05:55 PM

Well these polls only work if everyone replies I guess.

Male interested women here. (another one haha)

Asta!!

World's King 05-30-2005 05:56 PM

I like tits and ass.

K-Wise 05-30-2005 06:02 PM

^ So post ops are in too?

Asta!!

jaco 05-30-2005 07:26 PM

TnA au natural please

So, by the people in this poll and the people I know I will assume to be only attracted to the same sex is rare where as bi is far more common or perhaps someone knows of people who are?

cellophanedeity 05-30-2005 07:32 PM

Omnisexual! *laughs*

I like humans. We're fun.

chickentribs 05-30-2005 09:05 PM

I have been involved in some discussions with gay men on the philosophy board, esp. regarding the issue of gay marriage. Found most people to be respectful with only the occasional comparison to deviancies like beastiality or some such nonsense, and honestly it seemed to be genuine ignorance as opposed to nastiness.

I have, though, been struck by a consistant need by some straight men to jump on any board that involves bi-sexuality or gay lifestyle issues to simply state that they were straight so couldn't be of help in the discussion. I guess that is nice if it is meant as a show of support, but could come across as a bit alienating to somebody...

snowy 05-30-2005 09:32 PM

I call myself sexually ambiguous simply because I don't believe you choose who you love based on anatomical difference or similarity. I don't like to be called bisexual because I see myself as being interested in a continuum of people of multiple sexualities and perspectives, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or sex.

But yes, I am interested in both women and men.

getwonk'd 06-01-2005 06:01 PM

I'm interested in men but I wouldn't say no if a female came into the picture.

ty300x 06-01-2005 09:32 PM

I'd say I', 80% into women and 20% into guys. I date girls and can mess around with guys. I would definitely have "fun" with my female friends, but never my males friends. Not sure where that falls on the poll. Stupid gray area. I usually consider myself a '2' on the old kinsey sexuality scale.

Gilda 06-01-2005 11:35 PM

Female, interested in women, and apparently the first in the poll. I've dated men, but found them not to my taste. On that Kinsey scale of hetero/homosexual, I'd probably be a 5.

Since two others have mentioned it, post-op transsexuals would be fine with me, as long as they are completely feminine.

And I know of more than a couple of guys who thought they wouldn't be attracted to a MTF until they met my sister.

Sweetpea 06-01-2005 11:52 PM

Bisexual all the way :)

although, even though i'm married to a man and am totally attracted to him and our sex is great . . . I would identify as a "lesbian indentified bisexual" because i am more attracted to women sexually than men. But i think onesnoyowl hit it correctly for us bisexuals, that the heart makes it's own choices whatever the gender is.

Straight as an arrow here :) Nothing but women

jbw97361 06-06-2005 06:56 AM

yeah, i looked but couldn't find a link anywhere for any sort for the kinsey scale... Curse you google deficient fingers!!!!

Anywho, some of us are bi and just dont like to bother others with our relationships with EITHER gender.

I thought about including the Kinsey scale but I figured it would take too many poll options (1-7 for men, 1-7 for women). It could make an interesting poll though.

Does anyone know how you place yourself on that scale, like is there a definitive test or do you just guess?

lurkette 06-06-2005 08:25 AM

Hm...I'm probably a 3 or 4 on the Kinsey scale.

iccky, I imagine you probably just "guess" based on self-knowledge. For example, I am married and occasionally find myself attracted to men besides ratbastid, but I am very powerfully attracted to women, so I'd probably say I'm primarily homosexual but more than incidentally hetero.

So much for anonymity.

After voting in this poll I'm not sure what the question or rather the results really answer. I'm not surprised by the results give the 180 responses of this small sampling of tfp users. The overwhelming majority of users are male and hetero. That's not really news. Curiousity about orientation....meeeh.... who cares? If you practice a little common sense when you contribute to these forums you'll make everyone who participates here feel welcome and free to express themselves appropriately. If you are an idiot the mods will see to it that you are decisively removed and I, for one, really like that.

Ustwo 06-06-2005 08:56 AM

I have always felt that all women are bisexual, some just don't know it yet.

So far I've convinced a few :D

Daniel_ 06-06-2005 09:48 AM

I could only find THIS....

http://www.channel4.com/life/microsi...ter/index.html

It seems that I am exactly 50% gay - "Congratulations! You've scored right in the middle and are a happy and well adjusted hetero man!"

Slavakion 06-06-2005 11:08 AM

Hmm... seems I'm 26% gay and need to loosen up a bit. :p
