Drugs... Sex... Etc,etc
I was reading 'Empire' earlier, and the guy reviewing Deck Dogz says "Pasvolsky doesn't really water down the language or the behaviour of his leads, and as a result, they do seem like your average annoying teens. They shoplift, dabble in drugs, vandalise property and are horny as hell."
But I'm thinking, most people I know aren't like this at all, and then I thought, maybe I'm leading too a sheltered life, because I would have thought the majority of teenagers have enough sense not to screw themselves up anymore. So my question is, is this the norm? Or is it just the way adults think how it's like these days?

I don't remember doing any of those things when I was a teenager. In fact, I deliberately stayed away from such things and I shut out people who were associated with them knowing that my life would somehow be a lot worse for it.
That was 14 years ago. Looking back on it now, turns out I was right. Most of those people who I thought were my friends are pretty much going nowhere in life. They still party, smoke weed and god forbid if they have kids (some do unfortunately) they don't take care of them. In the end, I think I turned out pretty well. If staying away from drugs, booze, etc. early on in life equals the definition of a sheltered life, then I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. But, I sure was horny as hell. I think that's gonna be the trend of the thread, alot of people will fit at least one or two of those "criteria".
But in the end, I think the view is alot worse than it needs to be, simply because you tend to notice teenagers that fit all of those criteria a lot more (they make a lot more noise, or leave behind vandalised property for instance), than the people that just experiment a bit, and generally behave themselves. As for me, I'll subscribe to the last one on the list too

I was the Evil/Goth/Druggie/Metalhead teenager.......(before these things were cool, and Yes I know they are no longer cool, but there was a brief period in the late 80's-early 90's when they were). I pretty much fit the criteria, except the shoplifting, and turned out pretty..............oh well, at least I dont do drugs anymore.

I hung out with a pretty rowdy crowd in high school, and that was probably true, but the vast majority of teens are not like that. Well, except for the horny part. |

I did all of the above, though not really shoplifting when I was a teen.. I did that when I was younger, but got out of it fast.
Basically from ages 15-20 I lived in various cities across western Canada filling my time with bmxing, drinking, doing drugs, and having sex. I haven't even come close to having as much fun since. I am almost 23 now. |

of all the teenagers i know, 99% drink(me included), roughly 90% smoke reefer (me not included) , now vandalizing is a touchy subject. We used to start fires and stuff all the time in garbage cans with fireworks or knock over construction signs but nothing like breaking into cars or destroying meaningful property.
Shoplifting very few i know do it, or atleast few talk about it. 2 summers ago a friend and i were going threw 20+ beers a day a piece, he'd go in, and come out with an 18pack or two and we would enjoy the day until night came and everyone else came out and then we would all buy more alcohol and party the night away. Since then my friend has long retired from beer runs. My close group of friends all smoke weed like crazy, 3 are in pretty good paying jobs, 3 are in college right now and me who doesnt smoke at all is floundering about for the next couple months until school starts. |

Are you counting everyone in your school etc, or just the people you "know"?

I think what happens is that people look at the few to classify the many. And most of them look at kids in high schools. The thing with public school is that it is just that....public. People there run the gamete of their activities in Drugs, sex, and other "morally questionable" activities. Everyone has to go to school so of course there would be people who do different things. What I saw of people in school was that except for a few bad seeds, for the most part, people there were good people. Most of them occasionally drank and smoked pot but I would not call it rampant.
The age when kids are 14-18 is a time to experiment and discover yourself. It is not surprising that some of them do try drugs, sex, and alcohol. I myself tried all of them during those years but I am not a bad person. I think it’s just easy for adults to classify all teens in that group, because of the ones they have seen. Either depicted in the media or on the streets hustling pot.

I remember vandalism was my thing in high/middle school, and it kinda still is, but that was just more of a "being a guy" thing rather than anything else, as I've still not done drugs (although I do drink now). I think that that description listed in the first post would only describe less than 10% of teenagers I knew (until college anyway).

I did none of the above. I know I lived a sheltered life. Hubby did all of the above, and he's a well adjusted adult who is in college and is a responsible father. Guess the teen years aren't always reflective of how an individual will be later in life.

I had older stepbrothers to do all of that for me. I was able to observe their behavior and I learned...its so blatantly evident that they are failures that I didnt even need anyone to tell me not to be like them. I assosiated their habits with failure.
one of them regularly had a mustache(however the f*ck you spell it) and beleive it or not, I still associate mustaches with stupidity on a subconscious level. I catch myself doing it, and realize its assenine of course... I'm more interested in money (to buy things for the car), cars (to take to the track), and sex(something to ease the sadness after throwing a rod) |

I didn't do the drugs, vandalize or shoplift, but most of my Friends did. All of us were horny as hell and there was a lot of screwing going on. I hung with all kinds of different groups. Student council, honor society, theater, music. didn't seem to make a difference. All the groups seem to contain some that did some that didn't.

1. Being horny is part of being a teenager. It's when your hormones kick in, puberty starts up, etc. Anyone who tells me "all teenagers are horny" will get a resounding "fuck you" from me, as this is a stupid comment to make. Of course they are. It's that part of their biological life cycle. If people didn't get horny in their teens, the world would be a much different place. Also: just because people in the current "teens" phase are more in touch and open about their sexuality doens't mean they're all whores. I've known many who enjoy sex for what it is, but are careful, protect themselves, and know the consequences of their actions. The rest are uninformed or rebellious anyhow. You can't save those who don't want to be saved. 2. There's not one generation of children that was free of shoplifters. They're just easier to catch now. 3. There's not been one generation of children that was free of drugs for quite some time, and I know for a fact that there are VERY many adults "dabbling in drugs" to balance out the "teens". 4. Vandalizing property is something asshole kids do. You raise your kid wrong, they get in the wrong crowd, you know the drill. Kids dare each other, there's machismo, peer pressure, and just plain-old stupid posturing. "I stole/broke this, I am so cool." |

Never shoplifted, never vandalized, never did any kind of drug other than prescription (when I was supposed to). But then, I knew a lot of people in my school who DID do these things. Shoplifted and did drugs, at least. Maybe a bit of vandalism here and there.

I don't shoplift anymore. I don't gratuitously vandalize anymore (I'm not above taking revenge in creative and semi-harmless ways, though.) I smoked pot once and didn't like it. I can drink you under the table, but I probably won't feel like it when you ask me to prove it.
I'm in student government. I do well in my classes. I work 30 hours in three days ecery week to help support my family. Of course I'm horny, I'm male and I don't need Viagra. There's nothing inherently wrong with drinking, drugs, and sex unless they're used/done irresponsibly (although in my opinion some drugs cannot be used responsibly.) |
