valentines day is coming...original ideas?
okay, i need some ideas for a valentines day gift. we all know of the standard chocolate and flowers gifts, and i want to do something creative and original instead. to spare you the long, drama filled story, ill just say that she is my ex but we still talk and hang out all the time. we both really care about eachother, and i want to give her something that really shows it. we hung out last night and took a picture together, so im thinking ill frame that and give it to her with a card. other ideas?
thanks |

The best gifts come from going a step beyond the usual. Don't buy a cake, bake it (or make your own candies).
Card? Write your own sentiments inside or do your own artwork. (a pic of you both on a card would be nice). A DVD of the first movie you watched together, or her favorite one. Instead of flowers, a little indoor herb growing kit & a book of garden pictures. A blanket & a book by her favorite author. and I'm running out of steam... |

You could always take the picture of the two of you, photoshop it and make it into a small card. My boyfriend took a picture of himself with chocolate syrup on him that spelled out my name and photochopped little hearts in all around himself and made that into a card for Valentine's Day. I absolutely love it. Because he actually put some time into making me something, showed me that he really cared. I still have the card up on my desk.

Im with ngdawg.....valentines means nothing to me, Dave and I celebrate the 18th of every single month in some little way and that means more to me than ONE february 14th a year.
V-Day is nothing but a way for retailers to get you to spend more money on something you can buy for 50-75% less on february 15th but....if you must celebrate that day....something from the heart, or made from your own two hands would mean a lot more to me that a box of chocolate or a store bought card

I'm anti - love.. but it just seems wrong that people need a reminder from the greeting card companies that they are supposed to tell their loved ones that they love them on one specific day of the year... Isn't that something that should be done every day?

along with the other ideas...she's an ex, so surely you know her pretty well? what does she love? what could you give her that would mean the most to her?
is this a romantic "let's get back together" type gift or a "you're a great person and while we may never be more than friends, i'm always going to love you" kinda gift? i'd be very careful of the vibe your gift carries, depending on where you'd like this relationship to go. |

Like most things in life, it's what you make of it. I celebrate February 14th every year, usually with a card, gift, and flowers. None of them are ever heart shaped though, or say anything about Valentine's Day on them. They say "Happy Anniversary" instead to celebrate the February 14th seven years ago when I finally married the love of my life.

I get flowers, card and chocolate covered strawberries, and I ain't givin' that up, homey. It's one of the only times of year (besides birthdays and anniversary) that a girl is supposed to receive flowers. We girls love to get flowers.
How about soap/lotion/bath type stuff? To give it a more unique feel, buy them from the local health food store, then explain what each thing is for, aromatherapudically or otherwise. I'd be so impressed and tickled if my husband did that for me. Bake for her! Make her a special batch of cookies just for her! Or, make her dinner. |

4 centuries out of style but it still never fails...the love sonnet.
If you can write something remotely passable about you and her and really make it heartfelt, it'll make her feel very loved, appreciated, and special. Which, of course, she is. Your relationship might be a little light for that sort of thing, though. The picture's a good idea...take her ice skating or to a museum or on some other activity that you'll get to actually interact with each other during, and just have a good time.

just pointing out the obvious- if you're getting your ideas from someone else, they aren't really original, are they?
It doesn't have to be fancy, flashy, or creative. It just has to come from the heart, to show that you care.

Here's one that I used when I was going to be at sea for V-Day a few years back. I sent her a dozen roses via FTD, and the card read "I'll love you until the last one dies." But, I had them substitute one fake rose into the dozen. THe girl who took my order was like "If she doesn't like it, I'll marry you!"
She told me later she didn't notice right away that one of the roses was fake, until they all did start dying except one. -Mikey |

Go for it ICER. She'll love it!
My wife still has that one fake rose displayed in our house with the card. She loves telling that story to visitors. Whenever she does, I kid her, "I don't know honey... I think I see a petal wilting on there..." -Mikey |

Make your own card instead of buying one. Cook dinner rather than going out to eat. Grow your own flowers instead.... I'll retract that last suggestion!!!
