Introducing Lasereth and Redjake: Death Sled

Me and Lasereth had a couple of decrepit computers that belonged in a dumpster lying around the room. Neither will take Windows XP (we're talking about 99 MHz here) so we decided it was time for another abusive computer-hardware-destroying-fiasco. At work we talked about what would be cool. Some ideas:

Body-slam them into a dumpster

Hit them with a sledgehammer

Blow torch? We could light those bitches up

Maybe ram them with a truck or run over them

We eventually settled on rigging up the two computers into a Death Sled of Computerness and chaining it to my Dad's wrecker at his shop. One of us could ride it around the shop like a christmas sley! The wrecker is a Turbo Diesel 450 Cubic Inch V8. More than enough to pull two computers and Lasereth!

So we take the computers down to the shop and get the wrecker ready. I pulled it around the shop (stick shift baby, lotta fun) and backed it into position. Me and Lasereth got some chains and bungie cords and made a harness (complete with footholders and reins) for the two computers. We chained it to the back of the wrecker!

Then, we put some towels on top of the two computers and Lasereth sat down on the Sled of Awesomeness. I crank the Turbo Diesel V8 up, activate the beacon lights on the wrecker, and let her fly! My first thoughts were: wow, he's staying on the Pentium Sled! Not falling off! It was awesome seeing Lasereth through the rear view mirror on the Sled. I drug him around the shop for about 40 feet, hitting probably 4-5 MPH (maybe 6 at the straightaway) and then Lasereth wiped out because the harness disintegrated when I hit Warp 10 (around 7 MPH). It's hard to keep a Turbo Diesel stick shift running while going that slow! I had to let the clutch out a bit. Disasterous consequences!

Anyway, Lasereth wiped out and I hit the breaks. He wasn't hurt, just a scrape on his leg and dust everywhere. Left a huge scrape path along the gravel, leading up to where we stopped

Best part? I got it on video! As soon as I get it uploaded I'll post it, it's about 17 MB (sorry dial-upers).

Mods, if this post seems meaningless and worthy of deletion, you will miss out on an action-packed video!

I'll get the video up ASAP!

Personally, I would have given them to a local charity, school or elderly relative. 99Mhz is fine for web-browsing.

But I don't want to make you feel bad. :-)

They didn't have OSs And I'm not about to go looking for a copy of Windows 3.1 or 95 and reinstalling it all and finding the drivers and everything. Just to give it away

Good idea. You guys would've been fun to grow up next to.
Needs more speed, though, so I hit fast-forward.

Btw, who was your cameraman?

I'd like to live to see 90 too, but if I have a spur-of-the-moment idea, I'm gonna do it (as long as it's pretty safe). Dragging two computers (and Lasereth) behind a wrecker going 5 MPH is pretty tame when compared to the stuff on Jackass and other shows

of my friends that all thought that same way...

I lost one 14 years ago.

2 others at the end of finale Xfiles Season, there's even an In Memory Of... for him and his brother.

all of them thought that same "as long as it's pretty safe"

None of them saw 30. YMMV.

You're telling me one of your friends died from doing something similar in dangerousness to being dragged behind a wrecker going 5 MPH? The only way Lasereth could have got hurt is if I hit the clutch and the wrecker rolled back on him. In which there are brakes for that kind of thing. There's a big difference between being dangerous and just having some good old fashioned fun. If we thought it was the least bit dangerous he would have been wearing a helmet. Which was not needed. In fact, no armor at all was needed. Because we were going 5 MPH.

Sorry if you lost your friends because they like to live life on the edge but I have my own life to "reality check" me every once in a while. We don't do anything life-threatening In fact, we were gonna water-ski with the two computers on gravel but we decided not to because of.....well, dying and stuff. But thanks for your concern

sure, but your antics prove otherwise when other people are involved. I don't need to remind you of the car incident thread you posted a few back...where you two could have been shot IIRC.

while you may find it to be perfectly fine... there's others out there that mucky up the mix beyond your control, as is what happened to my other friends. They did things relatively safe especially the one that was in Xfiles, they did stuff like Jackass back in the 80's as they both were stunt men in Hollywood. Didn't die from stunts died from a bad car wreck in Beverly Hills involving another car that hit them from the side.

nevertheless, that's just my opinion...

i think its great.

i reckon the video should have showed the adoring public exactly how much you guys fucked up the 'pentium sled'... (before Lasereth took to them with the sledge hammer) and i'd like to see more speed in the next effort, so that Lasereth (or i suppose it'll be your turn Redjake) pulls some serious G's around that corner.

btw, exactly how tall is the guy holding the camera, seemed like he was a giant.

sounds very grizzly to me! I bet he could lay some smack down if necessary!

Ya more G's on the turn would be crazy, I would do it if it wasnt damn gravel!

Reminds me one time me and my buddies were bored as hell, playing Halo for like 4 hours we decided its time to go outside. Well it was like 4 degree's out with 5-6 inches of snow. I have this old taurus, was my first car, I bought my mustang when the taurus tranny shat itself.

We ripped the hood off of this thing and took it to "Dice Hill" which is like, probably the biggest hill around here thats clear enough to slide down. I had some parafin(sp?) wax coz of where I work and we waxed this bitch down real good on the bottom. We built a ramp that was like 2 and a half feet tall.

Man I wish we would have video taped that, we had a crowd and everything people said we must have gotten a good 8 feet in the air all flying in different directions landing all over the place. Only one person actually stayed on the hood, but was quickly blown off as he landed.

Good times when you create your own ways of having fun out of crazy stuff :P

Sorry that's exactly what my point was, while we think it's safe it's something outside of our scope that whacks us. I wasn't trying to kill the thread.

back to your regularly scheduled program of the Lasereth and Redjake Variety Show.

As much as I like being in Chapel Hill for the summer, it's things like these that would've been fun had I stayed home in King, as I would've been right there too most likely.

I must say, that looked pretty damn fun, though faster would have always been better if it was attainable.

Kinda reminds me of the last computer-related smackdown I participated in, when RedJake and I took an old pickaxe and demonstrated an appetite for destruction against my defunct 17" computer monitor. One thing they don't lie about, those monitors hold a charge for a long ass time, even if it isn't working at all. Wooden handle on the pickaxe was probably a good thing.

Car + Snow + Bordom reminds me of something this past winter. Several friends and I were bored and held up inside after a snow storm of only about 4 or 5 inches, but well packed on the streets and such. So it just so happened we had an old mattress that wasn't being used, and someone had a tow cable in their trunk. We put two and two together and ended up trading places going up and down half the streets in Chapel Hill sitting on a mattress holding on for dear life to the tow cable and being pulled behind a car. You had to dig your feet in real well but once you got the hang of it, it was pretty damn fun. I know while I was on it I got up to a little over 20 mph which seemed a lot faster, though I wiped out a couple times when they purposely whipped me around and I hit the curb area and flipped. All and all great fun, and my favorite part was when we were stopped for a second letting a car pass from the other direction, the other car stopped beside me (on the mattress), rolled down the window, and pretty much just gave me a blank uncomprehending look while asking if we were insane. A quick shrug of the shoulders and call to the spotter in the passenger seat of the car and we were on our way again, with the people in the car dumbfounded that we were actually doing it.
