Jeri Ryan (Star Trek and Boston Public hottie) and kinky politician ex hubby

I wasn't sure where to put this, and it is a story that could fit into many of the forums -Sexuality/Politics/Entertainment; so I'll stick it here.
Summary: The hot TV star in court documents related to a custody fight alleged that her ex husband, who's running for Senate in Illinois, took her to sex clubs and encouraged her to engage in sexual activity with him in public.
Here's a link and the story:

Ex-wife of GOP Senate candidate alleged sex club forays
Tuesday, June 22, 2004 Posted: 0647 GMT (1447 HKT)

Republican Senate candidate Jack Ryan and actress Jeri Ryan

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- The ex-wife of Jack Ryan, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, alleged in court papers filed in 2000 that he took her to sex clubs and asked her to engage in sexual activity in front of other patrons.

Portions of the documents, which related to a visitation dispute over the couple's son, were released Monday, after a judge in Los Angeles ordered them unsealed.

At a news conference Monday, Ryan reiterated the denial he made in his initial legal response to the charges by TV actress Jeri Lynn Ryan, in which he called the allegations "ridiculous" and "smut" and insisted he was "faithful and loyal to my wife throughout our marriage."

"I am sticking by the exact things I said five years ago," he said. "No one has ever said that I haven't abided by every single law or abided by my marriage vows or abided by commitments I've made to people."

Ryan also said he intends to stay in the Senate race, despite unease among fellow Republicans about the potential political fallout.

"I think we'll be victorious in November," he said.

Jeri Ryan, who starred in the TV shows "Boston Public" and "Star Trek: Voyager," also issued a conciliatory statement, saying that she now considers her ex-husband "a friend" and has "no doubt that he will make an excellent senator."

While not addressing the sex club allegations directly in her statement, she said that "there was never any physical abuse in our marriage -- either to myself or to our son -- nor, to my knowledge, was he ever unfaithful to me."

"Jack is a good man, a loving father, and he shares a strong bond with our son. I wish him all the best," she said.

Several Chicago media organizations had sued for release of documents relating to the Ryans' divorce, saying the public interest outweighed their concerns about privacy and the possible effect on their now 9-year-old son. Friday, a judge in Los Angeles, where their divorce was litigated, agreed to unseal portions of more than 360 pages of documents, although large parts remained blacked out.

Both Ryans had objected to the release of details in the documents, but they opted not to appeal the ruling.

Jeri Ryan said her then-husband took her on three "surprise trips" in the spring of 1998 to New Orleans, New York and Paris, during which he took her to sex clubs. She said she refused to go in the first and went into the second at his insistence.

"It was a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling," she said in the court document, adding that her husband "wanted me to have sex with him there, with another couple watching. I refused."

She said on arriving at the third club, in Paris, "people were having sex everywhere. I cried. I was physically ill. [He] became very upset with me and said it was not a 'turn on' for me to cry."

In his legal response to her allegations, Jack Ryan said while he did arrange "romantic getaways" for the couple, they "did not include the type of activities she describes."

"We did go to one avant garde nightclub in Paris, which was more than either one of us felt comfortable with. We left and vowed never to return," he said.

Ryan, 44, a wealthy former investment banker, is locked in a tight race with Democrat Barack Obama for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Peter Fitzgerald -- a potentially key contest in the battle for control of the evenly divided Senate.

Rumors about allegations in Ryans' divorce documents swirled during the GOP primary, but Ryan steadfastly refused to release them.

He said Monday that he and his wife tried to keep the documents sealed out of fear of the possible impact on their son, Alex.

"Jeri Lynn and I long ago put those issues behind us," he said. "It's not helpful for my son ... to reopen those conversations."

Ryan said he believes voters will not hold the allegations against him.

"I think that when voters look into their hearts and minds and say, 'Can we trust this fellow Jack Ryan, or does he try to do the best he can, or is he in this job for the right reasons?' I think they'll see that same sincerity to try do the right thing, though knowing that in the end that I am human and I do fail."

Besides tittilation at the mental image this story helps to create, there are many different topics for discussion that this story raises.
It seems like they were just being a little kinky, but that no one did anything wrong. Do we hold our politiciians to a higher standard of vanilla sexual desires? What bearing does a couple's kinkiness have on custody matters, and what has become of the family law situation in this country that custody fights are not really about what is in the best interest of the child, but about dragging the opponent's name through the mud?
Personally, I think this is a non-story with not much relevance to anything, but the media likes it because everyone loves some juicy sex scandal, and even better when it's involving attractive people and a Republican politician. So, having said that, I'm guilty of spreading the story some more, for your amusement, enjoyment, and to facilitate discussion.

Whatever people do in the privacy of their bedroom is their business, I don't want to know about it. It's not my business. Long as it's legal, I really don't care.

However, what I find most disturbing about this story, and in every divorce, there are always three sides, his, hers, and the truth to the story. But, he took her to these sex clubs, the first time, the second time, and the third time, and he wasn't quite getting that she wasn't into it, and then got mad when she got upset.

If he won't pay attention to the woman he promised to love, honor and cherish (or some such bs) and honor her wishes, I wouldn't trust him in office.

First...I don't really care what activities that they engaged in. They were married (at the time), and it's their business...not mine.
However...isn't he the Republican candidate? Isn't this the party that wants to get into everyone's personal and private business? I see a duality here.

This quote bothered me the most. Do "Inquiring minds" take precedence over the privacy of someone's personal affairs. I think this is extreme bullshit and I am disappointed that an issue like this can actually be used in court. What is wrong with our country when other's peoples thirst for prying outweighs one's individual privacy?

Basically sex sells. If it was a boring private divorce, no one would care, but add the Penthouse Forum angle, and he' a politician, she a actress, both attractive, so its doubleplus good for the media.
Political parties don't matter to the press when there's a sex scandal, it sells and money is greater than party loyalty

and if i may be a pervert for a moment. I would love to see one of her video tapes.

Jeri Ryan.....ex-wife of Jack Ryan....I didn't know this.

If I were a more feeble person I'd say that gets him my vote right there

Seriously though, I don't see how this has anything to do with child custody, and even less to do with a senate candidacy. Besides, if my senators are getting good sex, they're probably happier, and they'll probably be happier during the (little) time they dedicate to lawmaking as well

*obligatory wish to see Jeri Ryan naked in public*

Jeri Ryan, not down with the kink.

http://thesmokinggun.com/archive/0622041ryans1.html

"JUNE 22--In what may prove a crippling blow to his U.S. Senate campaign, divorce records reveal that Illinois Republican Jack Ryan was accused by his former wife, actress Jeri Ryan, of pressuring her to have sex at swinger's clubs in New York, Paris, and New Orleans while other patrons watched. The bombshell allegation is contained amidst nearly 400 pages of records ordered released yesterday by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge who ruled on media requests to unseal documents from the Ryan case. The salacious charge leveled at the politician was made by Jeri Ryan, who has starred in TV's "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Boston Public," in a court filing in connection with child custody proceedings (you'll find a portion of that heavily redacted September 2000 document below). The performer alleged that she refused Ryan's requests for public sex during the excursions, which included a trip to a New York club "with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling." While Ryan confirmed the trips with the actress, he described them simply as "romantic getaways," denying her claims that he sought public sex. The politician has repeatedly claimed that his divorce file--portions of which were sealed in 2000 and 2001--contained no embarrassing information that would harm his chances against Democratic nominee Barack Obama. The Ryans were married in 1991 and, in November 1998, Jeri Ryan filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences." (6 pages)"

I guess being married to Jeri Ryan isn't enough for some people; you have to have other people SEE you banging her to make it official. I am suprised that she was ill at the sight of a swinger club in Paris. I would never picture her as a prudish person, but one can never tell these things by appearance I guess. I think it is entirely possible that she was ill at her husband's actions, not the activities in the club.

Also, her husband is an asshole in general for trying to force her to go to swinger clubs.

I love the part where it says this could be a crippling blow to his campaign. Here I thought that the crippling blow to his campaign was running against a black democrat who is from Chicago in the Illinois Senate race. Also having the same last name as the disgraced former governor doesn't help. In the last gubenitorial election, I recall seeing a voter poll about who they were planning on voting for. The Republican candidate (who's name was also Ryan, but was a different guy, neither the old governor or Jack Ryan) would be losing by almost 20%. Then, they would go back and explain to the people polled that he was not the old governor and he would only be losing by 5%.
I have tons of faith in the voting public.

Why Unseal Ryan's Divorce Papers?
Neither Jack nor Jeri wanted them unsealed. What gives?
By Brendan I. Koerner
Posted Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at 3:05 PM PT

Records from the 1999 divorce of Illinois Senate candidate Jack Ryan were unsealed Monday, and the revelations contained therein are spooking some of his supporters. The documents contain allegations from his ex-wife, actress Jeri Ryan, that her then-husband had a predilection for taking her to raunchy sex clubs. Both Ryans opposed the unsealing of the divorce records. Why was the court permitted to overrule their wishes?

Because the First Amendment rights of media organizations generally supercede the privacy rights of litigants, since the American legal system favors transparency in all court proceedings. In the Ryan case, the Chicago Tribune and a Chicago TV station sued in Los Angeles (where the divorce proceedings took place) to unseal the records. In keeping with prior rulings nationwide, the court concluded that the public's right of access outweighed whatever emotional distress the unsealing might cause.

To keep divorce records sealed, a defendant must prove that the release of the documents would cause objective harm to a concerned party, typically a juvenile. Indeed, the Ryans argued that salacious details of their case would damage their 9-year-old son. But the court ultimately concluded that only some of the documents contained information that might damage the child's psyche and unsealed the rest. Unfortunately for Ryan's campaign, the courts don't construe the disclosure of embarrassing sexual quirks as innately harmful.

This is hardly the first time that a politician has tried to prevent a media outlet from digging into his matrimonial secrets. One of the most famous was 1992's In re Keene Sentinel, in which a New Hampshire newspaper sued to unseal the divorce records of former Rep. Chuck Douglas. The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled that "there is a presumption that court records are public," and that it was up to Douglas prove "with specificity" how the unsealing of the records would cause him harm.

The Ryans' records might never have been sealed at all if not for an unbalanced Trekkie named Marlon Pagtakhan. When Jack Ryan initially asked the court to seal the divorce records in 1999, the judge denied his request. But a year later, Pagtakhan was arrested for stalking Mrs. Ryan, who was then playing the buxom Seven of Nine on the TV show Star Trek: Voyager. In hundreds of sexually explicit e-mails, he made graphic threats against the actress's family. (Pagtakhan was sentenced to five years of probation in 2001.) The stalking was enough to convince the judge that the Ryans' information should be sealed, lest some private details fall into the hands of other deranged fans.

Next question?
