Coke...

First you specify that you want a "coke" and then the question is asked "what kind?" and you reply with the specifics.

Down south it's all about brand names.

Polyphobic 06-02-2004 06:59 AM

Pop in colorado. Pop also in Washington state. For some reason, I hear soda and think of a fountain drink.

Coke works fine down here bro. Its kinda like Kleenex. It doesnt mater if its a Kleenex brand or a Puffs or some generic brand its still a Kleenex.

primal 06-02-2004 07:11 AM

It's pop. Also it's splinter not sliver.

Tonic is club soda with some extra chemicals added.

Here in MD (right by DC) we use soda and coke pretty interchangably, although we also go by brand name since UMD is a Pepsi campus.

I prefer Coke, because when I want a cola I want a bloody Coke.

Location: NW PA, USA

Word: Pop, Drink

Funny thing is I also use Pop to talk to my father, I dont use dad, father, etc.. just Pop/Pops

NoSoup 06-02-2004 08:30 AM

Soda is the way it should be... also, here in Wisconsin, we say "Water Fountain" whereas other, less cultured :D , regions say bubbler, referring to the thing that spouts water out so you can drink it...

jobu 06-02-2004 10:16 AM

what a great thread. when i used to live in new york we would have this discussion all the time. i grew up calling it pop. when i first moved to ny and ordered a pop, people would look at me like i was speaking a different language. strange.

in ny i worked with a guy from pennsylvania who told me that half the state calls it pop and the other half soda. he went on to tell me that there was some sort of charity sporting event ( i think basketball) that had the sodas vs the pops. anyone ever heard of this?

riptide4070 06-02-2004 11:12 AM

I'm from north carolina, so I call it soda

la petite moi 06-02-2004 11:25 AM

I always just say: Can I get a coke pleaaaaassseee?

Sometimes I say soda, but never pop.

Rubyee 06-02-2004 11:28 AM

Some of you people need to relax and calm down. This isn't a life or death thing, now.

Whatever happened to "soda pop?" Or how about "soft drink?"

It is simple- when asked what I want to drink, I ask if the restaurant peddles coke products, or pepsi products. If they answer coke, I tell them I want a diet coke. If they answer pepsi, I ask for the crab juice.

If I am running into the gas station, I will usually ask the person with me if they want a pop.

If I am referring to the drink in a passive voice, I use soda.

Sometimes, I use soda pop.

denim 06-02-2004 12:32 PM

Soda. I'm from the northeast USA.

Funny map. I like how Phoenix is equally split between all names for it. All those damn transplants fucking everything up here. I either refer to it as soda or coke.

Rekna 06-02-2004 02:19 PM

pop! (south dakota) The midwest all refer to it as pop.

Coke is a brandname. Nothing pisses me off more when I ask for a Coke and they bring me a Pepsi.

User Name 06-02-2004 02:23 PM

South Florida is definitely "soda" territory, and that's the word that I use.

matteo101 06-02-2004 02:26 PM

Soda Pop..;)

heyal256 06-02-2004 03:57 PM

As has been mentioned, soda here in New York

06-02-2004 04:11 PM

kepage- You read my mind- I thought about starting a thread like this just yesterday!
Soda is ahead, and I just made it more ahead.

I like using the old fashion/english verions- soda, colour, favour, etc.

Laugh! 06-02-2004 05:10 PM

I live in Dallas and I call it coke. Usually though, we just use the real name of the drink, but when referring to carbonated beverages as a collective, we use coke. I hate Coca-Cola too.

My relatives from Wisconsin either call it soda, pop or soda-pop. All of those drive me insane, especially soda-pop.

The real question is: how many of you drink the best drink ever, Dr Pepper. It seems to be a South thing as well and the restaruants that serve it grow scarce as you travel northward - try it out sometime. My mom even used to hate it when she lived in Indiana, but after moving to Dallas, she began to love it for some reason. Hmmmm...

Phaenx 06-02-2004 05:59 PM

[x] Don't care.

The item has multiple names, fascinating. I honestly thought people would have gotten over this by now.

*grumpy*

When I am at school, everyone I know calls it a bubbler, confused the crap out of me for quite a while. Never call it a water fountain. That is what you find on a golf course. I always have and always will call it a drinking fountain.

Hrothgar 06-02-2004 07:18 PM

I call it by the name of the product. Coke=coke and Pepsi=pepsi.

Jackebear 06-03-2004 01:54 AM

It's called "pop" in Canada and "soda" would be soda water like when you ask for a vodka soda or vodka tonic.

It will always be POP for me.

man, elfuq kind of just did away with this whole thread. :-) that's a pretty interesting map though. i'd like to see more like that displaying other regional differences.

raeanna74 06-03-2004 12:38 PM

I'm from Wisconsin. I used to call it pop all the time. When I waitressed at a truck stop I got so many comments about my term for it that I eventually changed what I called it. It stuck somewhat. I find myself morphing back into my old habit of calling it pop. I actually like the word pop - just has a ring to it. Maybe I like it because it's what I used to call it as a kid. Like that sound when you pulled the metal cap off "POP!"

That's funny. I know waynesville aint that far from Boone, and it's called coke here.
I use to call it Soda when I grew up overseas, then when I went to college in IN, it was called pop, and then I moved to NC, and they call it Coke, but I still call it pop. :D

ObieX 06-05-2004 02:26 AM

From NJ here and we call it soda. Calling it coke is just confusing in most cases, but i use it sometimes too. When i refer to a coke im refering to either coca-cola or pepsi though. I find it annoying when i order a "coke" and get back "what kind". It pissed me off, though, when i ask for a "coke" and they say "we dont have coke". I always end up asking "ok, what else do you have", the reply always being something like "well, we have pepsi, diet pepsi, etc etc". To me pepsi and coke are the same damn thing - cola. People look at you even more strangely if you order a cola though.
The coke-pepsi things gets really old really fast. The taste isnt really noticable at all if you dont pay attention to it. Not anything like the difference between regular and diet. Diet cola tastes like rancid ass to me.

cowudders14 06-06-2004 11:53 AM

I hate both the words pop and soda! I used to work friday nights in a petrol station and would get drunks asking me for a "gottle of gop" etc at 3AM. Trying to prise from them which of the many brands of soft drink we sold they actually wanted was a nightmare!

"Just gimme some pop man, why you givin me all is assle over some op? Just a can of fizzy. You hear me?!"

I loved my job... ;)

pig 06-06-2004 12:21 PM

I'm with cowudders, but for different reasons. I usually go with coke, or maybe the specific brand name - but the very sound of "pop" or "soda" makes bile rise in my throat. Akin to seeing old men from Ohio and PA, in pleather sandals with black socks pulled up to their mid-thighs with khacky shorts, running around the beach with metal detectors. icky.

wraithhibn 06-06-2004 12:39 PM

In my experience the map shows Kentucky about right. I'm from Northeastern KY and it always been pop, but since I moved to Louisville everyone calls it Coke. Pop is definitely better.

canuckguy 06-06-2004 02:24 PM

i've always went by pop but my wife called it cola for any soda type beverage.

cameroncrazy822 06-06-2004 02:39 PM

I live in MD and we generally indicate we want coke when wanting soda.

samiam 06-06-2004 02:45 PM

Carbonated flavoured beverages seem to be called pop in Canada and carbonated water seems to be called soda here. I had not heard the word soda to refer to a flavoured carbonated beverage until I visited the United States.

ariekitten 06-06-2004 03:24 PM

in texas i think we just call everything coke
well not everything, but all sodas....
i dunno why *shrug*
my dad calls them soda waters, but i usually ask "hey, anyone want a coke?"
and then i ask "ok what kind?"
people tease me about it

bundy 06-06-2004 03:51 PM

its called 'Soft Drink' all around Australia.

no one ever calls it Soda, unless its Soda Water (which is sparkling mineral water a la Perrier).

no one ever calls it pop, ever.

and coke is just coke, unless of course its coke.

Ralvek 06-06-2004 06:34 PM

I love the odd looks I get when I travel and ask for a pop!

ibis 06-07-2004 04:46 PM

THat map is cool. I'm so fasinated by stuff like that.

Arizona is not a "soda" state, atleast central Arizona,

BTW, it's COKE, ok?

choskins 06-07-2004 04:58 PM

Coke in SC.

When the restaurant offers Pepsi only, sometimes they say "Is Pepsi OK?" Sometimes they don't even bother.

splck 06-07-2004 06:55 PM

Only people from far away places call it soda around here.

Everybody knows it's pop.
