Pop or Soda

I live in Minnesota and have always called it pop. When I went to Wisconsin for school, everyone calls it soda. I know it is called both by different people and by other names by some. I was wondering what you call it. Also, where are you from because it seems to be a local thing. If you call it somthing else, what do you call it?

Charlatan 06-01-2004 04:31 PM

I don't know anyone in Canada that calls it soda (unless they are ex-pat Americans).

We call it pop.

maleficent 06-01-2004 04:35 PM

It's much easier to just ask for a beer, it's the same in any language, midwestern, southern, yankee... tastes better too.

Lasereth 06-01-2004 04:36 PM

Here in NC we call it "drink" or "soft drink." I used to call it pop when I was like 6. I've never called it soda and probably never will. All of my northerner friends call it soda, though.

proof that "pop" is correct: http://popvssoda.com/

 :D

glasscutter43 06-01-2004 04:54 PM

I call it "Liquid Death" because of the 9 tablespoons of sugar that are in a can of Coke.

i dont drink "soda" but i do drink beer.

amonkie 06-01-2004 04:57 PM

Call it soda here, but when I go to Minnesota to visit family, have to switch into "pop" mode. I hear pop and think of popsicle.

maleficent 06-01-2004 05:00 PM

For the folks that call it Pop -- is the sugar free version, diet pop? (that just sounds strange to me) Diet Soda sounds more normal.

SecretMethod70 06-01-2004 05:11 PM

how is diet pop strange sounding?

Kepage23 06-01-2004 05:12 PM

I never call it diet pop, I usualy just call it diet, or ask for a specific diet.

Amethyst 06-01-2004 05:14 PM

I hate when people call it pop. It's not pop it is soda!

warrrreagl 06-01-2004 05:17 PM

In the South, it's all Coke. Even if it's Pepsi, it's still Coke.

Mehoni 06-01-2004 05:22 PM

"dricka". ;)

KellyC 06-01-2004 05:30 PM

I use it interchangeably. Some times pop, other times soda, other times drink. Or I'll just say "Can I get a ____ (name of drink)"

Seriously though, what's this big controversy about it?

CheeseButtons 06-01-2004 05:31 PM

It's soda...always was, always will be.

CinnamonGirl 06-01-2004 05:43 PM

Being from Ohio, it was always "pop," but since I've lived elsewhere, I started calling it soda for whatever reason.

My mom said the next time I ask for a soda, though, she's going to hand me a box of baking soda

analog 06-01-2004 05:53 PM

Of course, I don't drinks cokes anymore, so it's not like I care much nowadays.

Deominous 06-01-2004 07:45 PM

Come on, everybody knows it's sodapop.

Just like the word taxicab.

elfuq 06-01-2004 07:50 PM

Interesting regional difference there.

MaGlC_MaN 06-01-2004 07:58 PM

coke.. but a lot of times i will just call it what it actually is, "hey, care to get me a mountain dew while you're up?"

Esco 06-01-2004 08:03 PM

Used to call it coke all the time. Couldn't figure out why everybody would get confused.

Now it's soda.

Sugar&Spice 06-01-2004 08:07 PM

In Wisconsin we all called it soda..now that I live in the north west everyone calls it pop.

punx1325 06-01-2004 08:15 PM

IT'S SODA!!! READ THE LABEL ON ANY STORE IN ANY STATE!!! IT WILL SAY SODA! No seriously if you look at a label or reciept it will say soda. Proves soda is right...

Jeff 06-01-2004 10:48 PM

Soda or Pop works.

Coke however, does not work. It's a brand name damnit.

WarWagon 06-01-2004 11:12 PM

This is one of THE things that pisses me off more than any other in Ohio. I hate it when people call it "Pop." Its not pop, pop is a fucking verb, not a noun. It's soda.

I grew up in Maryland and live in Florida. Only person I knew in those areas that called it "pop" was my grandmother, which is odd because she lived in that area all her life. I have friends in Wisconsin, and I hear pop quite a bit up there.

WI seems to be a transitional state for dialects. I hear people with no accent, a Chi-caaaaaaah-go accent, and the full-blown northerners who sound like the people in "Fargo".

eyeswimslow 06-02-2004 01:13 AM

Wow, I never realized so many people called it pop. I live in St. Louis and lo and behold, just about everywhere around St. Louis county calls it soda. I went to Cincinatti over the weekend and I had to do doubletakes everytime somebody asked me if I wanted pop at a restaurant. Crazy...

qtpye4u84 06-02-2004 02:09 AM

that map thing is cool but I think we have more ppl in oregon that say soda then what the map shows.

Down here in the south everthing is coke

absorbentishe 06-02-2004 05:28 AM

Pop here in Toledo!

troit 06-02-2004 06:01 AM

I, like a few others I see, have always called it soda. Doesn't matter what flavor...

I guess "What kinda pop do you have?" just doesn't sound right because of my upstate New York upbringing...

maleficent 06-02-2004 06:05 AM

Going to school outside of Boston, they were really bizarre - to the best of my knowledge Tonic was a Soda, Soda referred to Club Soda only. (I never could quite figure out what you got if you ordered a Gin and Tonic) But what do you expect from an area that doesnt put ice cream in a milk shake.
