What's your mantra?

I always carry a mantra in my wallet. Whenver I feel lost, depressed or what not, reading it actually helps. Some people have mantras, others have a quote or two which motivates them and pushes them through the tough times. I thought it would be neat and helpful if we shared our "mantras".

Here's mine:

Rudyard Kipling

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

I'm baaaaack!

I carry something similar- it is a list of why I do things. A list of why I keep going to work, of why I am quitting smoking, a list of why my life isn't horrible.

On it are a lot of names of friends and family, and some activities like video games and playing guitar, and of other things, like music and sunsets.

Reflecting on that list of things that make life richer can sometimes brighten my mood.

I had that hanging on my bedroom door when growing up.

it's now on the fridge.

I also had on my bedroom wall:
Quote:
Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Max Ehrmann, Desiderata, Copyright 1952

thanks Cynthetiq, that used to hang on the wall of my grandparents house and I haven't seen it for years... brings back memories

i have memorized this poem, which is good in adversity

Quote:
as i went down past charing cross
a plain and simple man was i
I might have been no more than air
unseen by any mortal eye

but lord in heaven, had i the power
to show my inward spirit there
then what a pack of human hounds
had hunted me, to strip me bare

a human pack, ten thousand strong
all in full cry to bring me down
all greedy for my magic robe
all crazy for my burning crown

I have two, as I get older, this one becomes more fitting -
Quote:
Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple
By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
Basic gist, do what makes you happy, the hell with what anyone else things...

And a passage from The Little Price by Antoine de Saint Exupery that I have in my wallet.
Quote:

"...AND AT NIGHT YOU WILL LOOK UP AT THE STARS. Where I live everything is so small that I cannot show you where my star is to be found. It is better like that. My star will just be one of the stars for you. And so you will love to watch the stars in the heavens...they will be your friends. And besides I am going to make you a present...and he laughed again.
That is my gift said the Prince...
In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing...and so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night...you--only you--will have stars that laugh...look for me...I'll be there for you.
And when your sorrow is comforted, he continued, for (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me...and I will be there in the night sky, shining on you...and with you forever, for here stars never die. Your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the stars...but you can say "the stars?...they are a gift...my friend gave them to me to make me laugh.

aaah gotcha. You're a rookie still. It's in the Member's Playground which you don't have access to just yet.

Welcome to the TFP.

------

One day on a plane to Los Angeles I was watching As Good As It Gets.... after Jack Nicholson walks into the waiting room and asks,"What if this is as good as it gets?" It struck me as a profound statement hitting me in the gut and leaving me dumbstruck about my life.

I was also reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which went over governing values and how to create them. It was a moment that I spent defining myself, shaping myself for the future. Each person has their own governing values, there is no right or wrong.

I don't share these values with most people I interface with, in fact I keep it in my PDA and I refer to it every so often to make sure that I'm still on target with them, and as my life changes, I add to it. I've not adjusted it since I got married, I will add to it tonight in this very thread.

What are some of your governing values? Do you know where your lines are and how close you can come to crossing them? Do you ever realize that you've crossed them?

Here's mine:

I, Cynthetiq, state the articles of my values, so as to strive for excellence, perfection, balance, and harmony.
  • I will strive to always be a good person.
  • Remember humility. The student can sometimes be the teacher.
  • I will leave society a better place by sharing experiences I have with as many people as I can.
  • I will take care of my physical self as it is the vehicle which my consciousness rides.
  • I will strive to feed and car for my mind as I continue to grow intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally.
  • I am a spiritual being, whose relationship is with God and God alone.
  • I will always look for the positive spin on all things.
  • I will always treat others better than I expect to be treated in hopes that other learn by my example. Respect others.
  • Always have compassion for fellow beings. Remember life wants to live.
  • I will honor my wife and family, offering my assistance, support and guidance. I will strive to be a good husband and family leader. I will remember that responsibility of leadership is shared.
  • I will honor my mother, father, and sister, offering my assistance and support and guidance spiritually, financially, and emotionally. I will strive to be a good son and brother.
  • I will use all senses to my maximum capabilities. Look. Listen. Touch. Taste. Smell. Think. Nothing comes to us that doesn't come in through the 5 senses. Only after collecting as much information, can a wise decision be made.
  • I will honor the value of money. I will strive to be debt free so as I never live beyond my means.
  • I will temper my heart with my mind and vice versa. Balance is essential.
  • I will live life to it's fullest as if every moment may be my last.
  • I work to live, never the other way around. I enjoy my work but must never lose sight of my true love, life. Choose life.
  • I will listen. I will do my best to shut up and pay close attention which can sometimes mean stopping what I am doing and just listen.

This is the first semester that I've spent in college away from home (2500 miles away from home), and after looking at all my options and what I want after college, I got scared shitless by the prospect of being in school untill I'm, you know, 30+. Where I want to go is just so damn intimidating, but it's the only place I really want to go. So I was kinda scared untill my parents sent me a card with this.

True story.

On one of my most darkest stretches of life, I was sitting in my truck a few years ago, honestly considering going for a last drive into something large, dense and immobile. As I sat in the parking lot with my truck idling, I prayed for a sign and immediately heard this song come on the radio the very second I stopped praying. It was one of those moments, when the skies suddenly seem to crack open and you realize that there is *someone* or *something* looking after you, trying to tell you that everything's gonna be alright, and you can immediate believe it.

Quote:
Don't Stop
by Fleetwood Mac

If you wake up and don't want to smile,
If it takes just a little while,
Open your eyes and look at the day,
You'll see things in a different way.

Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Don't stop, it'll soon be here,
It'll be, better than before,
Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone.

Why not think about times to come,
And not about the things that you've done,
If your life was bad to you,
Well, just think what tomorrow will do.

Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Don't stop, it'll soon be here,
It'll be, better than before,
Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone.

All I want is to see you smile,
If it takes just a little while,
I know you don't believe that it's true,
I never meant any harm to you.

Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Don't stop, it'll soon be here,
It'll be, better than before,
'Cause yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone.

Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Don't stop, it'll soon be here,
It'll be, better than before,
'Cause yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone.

Don't you look back,
Don't you look back,
Don't you look back,
Don't you look back,
Don't you look back.
As goofy as it may sound, this song probably saved my life. I sat in my truck and cried for about 2 hours after hearing that song, then went back inside my house and called for help.

Sometimes His voice comes across in strange ways. One things for sure, His words hit me like a ton of bricks that night... Who'd've thought He was a Fleetwood Mac fan?

And, no, I haven't looked back since. Yesterday's gone.

Attitude is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a business...a home...a friendship...an organization. The remarkable thing is, you have a choice every day of what your attitude will be. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the actions of others. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thinkg we can change is our attitude. Life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% of how we react to it. - author unknown
