Cold Sores

Does anyone know a way to get rid of cold sores? I bought that Abreeva stuff and put it on right when I felt "a tingle" just like the package says, but it didn't work I now have a full fledged cold sore and I need it to leave.... Any home remedies or something? Much appreciated.

i dunno about any home remedies. they run rampant in my family, especially in my dad, mostly when he's outside in the heat or in direct sunlight.

if it's just one, then live with it till it goes away. if you get them on a somewhat regular basis, go get a doctor to prescribe you some valtrex. say goodbye to that cold sore.

well, if it's a real cold sore then it's Herpes simplex 1, which I don't think is curable. HSV1 is mainly on the mouth can it can be spread to the genitals if a sore is present and you do oral. As far as remedies HSV loves the amino acid arginine which is in chocolate and other foods. It hates lysine which is in legumes and many other foods as well. If you go to the health food store you can get lysine supplements and also get Licorice pills, which help fight HSV outbreaks.

That site provides some at home remedies. There is a medicine out there called..camphophenic that my friend always uses. Another at home remedy that works good right when you feel one coming on is hydrogen peroxide. Just put some on a q-tip and dab it on there many times throughout the day. Chances are it will never become a full blown cold sore. But since you already have one..give the hydrogen peroxide a chance. Should dry it up quickly.

If it is a cold sore, it's a viral infection. Get your immune system up and/or get some anti-viral treatments.

Google for "cold sore home treatments" gives me:

Use a warm tea bag on the cold sore. Leave it in place for about 20-30 minutes, pressing on it firmly. By the next morning- the cold sore should be gone.

Get pharmaceutical grade CoEnzyme Q10 and break open a capsule. Smear liberally on the coldsore. It worked for me.

IF they are cold sores, the advice here is right on from what I can tell (although I've never had cold sores so I can't speak from experience). However, there tends to be confusion between cold sores and canker sores, which are not the same thing, so be sure that it is cold sores you're talking about:

Valtrex or zovirax cream - both too late for you now, but get a prescription so you'll have some on hand the next time one starts creeping up. If you coat the zovirax on just when you start feeling the tingle, the blasted thing either won't surface or will barely pop up. You'll look like you have spooge on your lip, but I'd rather that than the cold sore!

I always get them when the weather changes suddenly.

I tried the teabag thingee, and hopefully that works. The cold sore already feels like it's softer and not as large (it's located right where the dip is on my top lip, so it's pretty noticable and irritating). I used Chamomile tea bags. I hope that's ok Share some more if you guys have them, k? I looked at all those websites and they all gave good advice, unfortunately most of it was geared toward before actually getting the cold sore, so I'm a little late.

I've put my methods up in this and this thread - have one now, but it isn't visible due to my way of taking care of it

ok I consider myself an expert on this subject. I have had coldsores all my life, usually I will get 1 during times of stress, such as the start of a school year.

You will never 'get rid' of them - they are the result of the Herpes Simplex virus that you received from your mommy while in the womb. Consider it your very first birthday gift

you CAN treat them symptomatically though, and I believe I have found the perfect way to do so!!!!

You need 3 things: isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), lipactin (or some other product that forms a film-like seal over the sore), and polysporin (or any antibiotic ointment).

As soon as you feel the tingling sensation and you think you might be getting a cold sore, grab that bottle of rubbing alcohol. cover the opening with a finger, turn bottle over, and dab the finger over the spot. DO NOT RUB, just dab it in one spot. Let it dry for 10 seconds or so, then apply more alcohol. Do this like 5-10 times. Then, put the lipactin on. Let it stay for an hour or so. try not to smile or the seal will break and the stuff will peel off.

After an hour, go to a mirror and peel the lipactin off, and do the rubbing alcohol thing again. Put more lipactin on. Keep repeating until the cold sore is 'dead'... that means no more 'bubbles' and no more tingling. At this point, put polysporin over the sore. Looks silly, so good to do this over night. If you roll in your sleep alot, cover the polysporin with a bandaid so it doesn't rub off.

Here is the timeline I have my coldsore removal down to:

first day, afternoon maybe: Noticing tingling sensation, start doing rubbing alcohol and lipactin.

next day, morning: sore may be 'dead' already so start with polysporin to speed healing, otherwise, keep at it with rubbing alcohol.

nighttime: cold sore is definately and always dead by this time, sleep with a big wad of polysporin over it.

Next morning: sore is barely noticable... keep doing polysporin inconspicuously until it's completely healed.

NOte: if you do the polysporin while sore is still 'alive', it will spread through the area the ointment is covering. This is bad.

I have this down to a science now. Whereas once I had to walk around with those big ugly sores for several days (was hell as a kid in grade school), now I have them barely noticeable in the first place, from the alcohol stopping growth, and then healing very very fast from the polysporin.

Hope this helps

I just use carmex and it seems to work for me. I have tried other more expensive remedies and they never seem to work as well.

My suggestion is what I recommend in my business. I offer aromatherapy oils and uses.
For cold sores, use 1 drop uncut oil to 1 tbsp. of unscented lotion using either bergamot, myrrh, or sandalwood to apply to the sore 1-2 times a day.

I've never had a cold sore, but from what I've known by others, it does.
As a warning though, if you have sensitive skin, it can easily irritate, so be cautious.
