Belgium - couple of questions (you saw it coming, be honest :) )
OK, so I nicked the idea, just to be honest, but it seemed like a fun thing to make up, if you're from one of those not overtly known countries...
Again, people from Belgium (all 3 of us) , don't reply, we know you know So here goes, again, don't google if you can, it's more fun that way 1. Where on earth can you find Belgium anyway? 2. What is the official language of Belgium? 3. What's the capital of Belgium? 4. How many people live there? 5. Name 3 famous beers from Belgium 6. How about 3 famous athletes, sportsmen/women? 7. Name 3 famous foods from Belgium 8. Approximately how many brands of beer are there in Belgium? 9. Name one bad thing about Belgium (this one should be easy, so go all out if you want ) 10. Are gay marriages allowed in Belgium? 11. Is weed legal in Belgium? 12. What side of the road do they drive on in Belgium? 13. Exactly what was the function of Belgium during WW 2 ? 14. Belgium is at the core and the co-founder of what big organisation? 15. What exactly is a "belgian compromise" ? Tried to go both for general things and a few specific questions, so getting them all right is gonna require a good memory and luck that you just happen to know this things Have fun and the first one to get them all right, can go get themselves a beer from the largest beerbrewer in the world (AmBev - Interbrew) which happens to be Belgian

1. Where on earth can you find Belgium anyway?
North of France, West of Germany, on the coast of the north sea/english channel. I believe adjacent to Holland, with a lower degree of certainty. 2. What is the official language of Belgium? Flemish and French. Well, I think Belgium is a hyphinated country, technically? 3. What's the capital of Belgium? Brussels 9. Name one bad thing about Belgium (this one should be easy, so go all out if you want ) The Belgian Congo. 11. Is weed legal in Belgium? No 12. What side of the road do they drive on in Belgium? Right. 13. Exactly what was the function of Belgium during WW 2 ? Parts of Belgium where used as a way around the defensive line established by the French. By attacking over hilly terrain and using bombers rather than artillery, the german forces out flanked the french army. Less certainly, I believe the English retreated off of Belgian soil during the first period of WWII. The fact that the British military got out before the Germans wiped them out has been cited as one of the (many) turning points of the war. 14. Belgium is at the core and the co-founder of what big organisation? Nato.

Re: Belgium - couple of questions (you saw it coming, be honest :) )
I'm Belgian. Really, I am. Let's see...
1. Where on earth can you find Belgium anyway? In the middle of Europe, right between France, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. 2. What is the official language of Belgium? Dutch, French, and German. English is also widely known. 3. What's the capital of Belgium? Brussels. 4. How many people live there? 10 million 5. Name 3 famous beers from Belgium Stella Artois, Leffe, Kriek. 6. How about 3 famous athletes, sportsmen/women? Kim Gevaert (sprinter), Luc van Lierde (thriatlete, triple Iron Man winner), and others. 7. Name 3 famous foods from Belgium Waffles, apparently. 8. Approximately how many brands of beer are there in Belgium? Over a hundred, though I'd have to look up the exact number. 9. Name one bad thing about Belgium (this one should be easy, so go all out if you want ) Political corruption. But it seems to be getting better. 10. Are gay marriages allowed in Belgium? Yes. 11. Is weed legal in Belgium? A law was passed here a while ago that's too complicated to explain here, but basically if you're over eighteen you can smoke all you want, and if the police catch you with less than three grams on you you're free to go. They're going after the dealers, not the small time users. 12. What side of the road do they drive on in Belgium? The right side. 13. Exactly what was the function of Belgium during WW 2 ? We originally wanted to stay neutral, but fought the German invasion anyway and were defeated in two weeks time. 14. Belgium is at the core and the co-founder of what big organisation? Interbrew and the European Union. 15. What exactly is a "belgian compromise" ? No idea.

First of all:
“The expression 'Belgian compromise' has been applied to this characteristic process of problem solving: complex issues are settled by conceding something to each party concerned, through an agreement that is often so complicated that nobody completely understands all of its implications. In spite of the apparent inefficiency of these settlements, they do work in practice, because they resolve existing conflicts and thus allow life to go on without argument or obstruction. The ambiguities and confusions that arise from such compromises are usually solved on the spot, due to the Belgian talent for improvisation.” |
