But that doesn't mean that these kids don't have the right to do this. It may not be socially acceptable, but it is perfectly within their rights. As long as no public money has anything to do with this, we have no right to force these kids to desegregate their event. But it's our responibility to voice our disapproval of what they are doing, let them know that it's not right. Hopefully they'll change on their own, and that's the best we can hope for. Unfortunately, many times ignorance in this vein will only disappear with the generations. |

I just want to throw in my 3rd and 4th cents. I live in Georgia and let me make it absolutly clear that this is not behavior that would be acceptable in much of the state. I have lived in Southern California, Illinois, Texas, and Kentucky. I don't think that there is significantly more racism here than elsewhere. At times it is a little more open, but not really more prevalent.
The fact that these kids choose to have a seperate segregated prom is completely unacceptable to me. However, more as come to light since my first post. If this is a private event, then they have a right to do this. They should be castigated for it. (The Darwinist in me thinks they should be castrated too....but that is not legal.) But people have the right to be complete asses in our country if they choose. That does not mean there should not be consequences.

when i read the article, i was thinking "wtf, why would guys and girls want a prom to themselves?" ... racial segregation didnt even cross my mind.
i don't know how this is allowed in North America, but if something like that was organised in metropolitan sydney, all hell would break loose =) |

this is crap.... Why segregate again? What is the difference? I wish they could give their reasons to the segregation, so that i could debate with them.. and see where we end up.

first off, a big thanks to LD and Rinndalir for showing that Southerners are not racist anymore than others. it saddens me that people who speak out against ignorance are themselves obviously not too aware of how things are here and there. i am so weary with generalizations of the South.
anyhow, back to the topic, the school not only should not allow this to happen, they should not had been allowed to have segregated proms to begin with. at least post civil rights movement. to learn that they only stoped a year ago thunderstruck me. if the kids want it to be white only, let their little spoiled asses rent their own place, pay for their own refreshments and so forth. You can't stop all acts of hate without censorship but you CAN stop affiliating with it. i'd cut my funding off imediatly. as for the kids... i find it hard to believe, over all. i guarantee their parents are doing this. and in a way can you blame them if their parents are telling them to host white only? the kids have to go back home.... i have a feeling these children are in a real grinder. things like this make me frown upon all people who do such ignorant shit. i don't give a damn if you're fucking purple bisexual she-male from mars. if your kind, you'll get kindness from me. so..... let us stop seeing victims, or be victims. for now on why don't we all voice public opinions, forums, letters, polls, and what not? Shame to segregation. Shame to this school. Shame to any people that hold such bullshit meetings. white only proms. black spring break. ITS BULLSHIT. guys, we got to do something in our society to open eyes. white only or black only anything is just wrong and should be publicly frowned uponed and discouraged. if enough people act, fundings will die somewhere. i am so sick of his shit. |

inkriminator: We do not have the right, nor should we, to force our opinions or values on other people who are adults. we can, and i feel we must do so with the kids. i fear it is too late already, but i think all of us are obligated to interfere, frustate, pesture, and ultimately stop such foolishness.
if these kids do it, next year maybe other can also... repeat, repeat, repeat. if we stop it NOW maybe we can shape some children correctly: free of hatred that should never have been instilled into them in the first place. |

when i was in school in pittsburgh there was nothing like this, even though i'd say just about 30% of the kids were white. In fact, whites hung with blacks, asians hung with hispanics, etc. it was alot of fun. I think the people at the segregated prom will be
just missing out. It's very sad that the kids chose it like this. My fault for thinking that this generation would be smart. And what the fuck does the school have to say about this? Or do they just not give a fuck.
