Living in the best city in the world?
I live in Sydney, Australia. Alot of my friends have just finished University and have been coming back from trips overseas. Some of them have been to the US, others have been to Europe and a few have gone to Asia.
One comment they have all made is that there's no place like home and that hands down, Sydney is the best place in the world to live. What I wondered was does everyone in the world say the same thing? Have you travelled overseas only to come back and tell everyone there's no place like home, or is Sydney truly the best city in the world?

yes, Sydney is the greatest place on earth.
your friends are right... that feeling of touching down in Sydney (home) is overwhelming... no matter where i´ve been, i always thank the lord for delivering me back to sunny Sydney. but i should imagine that ´coming home´ is a phenomena felt by the vast majority of humans when they return from a trip abroad. (even if they are slightly deluded about their cities and towns being anywhere near as great as Sydney).

Well, I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and nothing (nothing) compares to my home town.
BUT... I believe that is characteristic of most people. They all love their homes (most do at least). Having said that, I've also spent a lot of time in many different cities around the world. And I now live in Sydney. It is, without doubt, the best city in the world I've ever lived in. Whilst it doesn't have everything I would like (less cultural and historical depth than say Rome or Paris, or even London), it is the best "all-rounder". Sydney also typically tops the polls for most popular or desireable city in global surveys. Sydney Rocks (no pun intended to my co-metropolitan colleague; inside joke...) It's not home, but it's so much nicer in many other ways! Mr Mephisto |

I honestly think that's just what people say.
I feel Canada is the best country in the world to live in...Doesn't matter what city..Well it does, But to me it's still canada..No matter what city your in...But I prefer Toronto. But people in the states will say the same thing about thier city or state..even thier country. Now I realize that thier are country's where alot of people what to get out of thier current country. There is no place like home...And wherever that is, Most people will feel that it's the greatest place to be. |

I spent the past year living in London, and the minute I arrived back in my hometown, I felt as if I had left the greatest city in the world. I've been away from there for 4 months now and I cannot wait until March when I will be able to make it back there, unfortunately only for a week though.

Well I've never been to Sydney, but out of the cities I have been to (Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Nouméa, The Gold Coast, Brisbane, and a few small cities around New Zealand), I have to say my hometown Christchurch is the best... though Nouméa with its hot weather, beautiful chicks and topless public beaches comes pretty damn close. If only I spoke good French I'd probably go live there.

I hate to break it to all you Sydney-ites, and everyone else, but apparently the verdict is in and MELBOURNE beat you all out:
<a href="http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/10/04/1033538761412.html">http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...538761412.html</a> The text: Melbourne has been declared the near-perfect town after being rated the best city in the world to call home. In a survey of 130 cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit rated Melbourne and Vancouver in Canada as the best cities in the world in which to live, with Perth ranked third and Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide tied in eighth place. Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby was rated the worst. The London-based EIU assessed the level of hardship for expatriates in the 130 cities, focussing on 12 factors including housing, education, recreational activities and climate. Not surprisingly, Melbourne's weather prevented it earning a perfect score of zero, with the Victorian capital and Vancouver scoring one point, Perth two and Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane all on four. Sydneysiders won't agree, but Melbourne's weather, based on humidity rather than rain and temperature, was adjudged better. And while Sydney received a near-perfect score in all categories, its high level of violent crime, on a par with New York and London, cost it points. "Really we found very little wrong with Melbourne, it's just about the perfect city," said Bill Ridgers, editor of the EIU's Cost of Living survey. "It got a perfect score in every single category we looked at, apart from slight faults in its humidity and the availability of recreational activities, but that's really splitting hairs." Cities were rated one to five in the 12 categories, with one at 0 per cent meaning there was no hardship and five, at 100 per cent, indicating extreme hardship. Sydney earned a two for violent crime, the same as New York and London, while Port Moresby scored five. Melbourne received 1.1 for recreational activities, falling down on the availability of concerts and theatre, while Sydney earned one, but Perth received the lowest score of the five Australian cities surveyed. The survey was split into three categories with the health and safety section rating the threat of violent crime, the threat posed by terrorism or armed conflict and a health and disease assessment. Culture and environment looked at the availability of nightclubs, restaurants, sporting events, sporting facilities, theatres, cinemas and concerts, as well as studying climate, levels of corruption and the availability of consumer goods and services. The infrastructure section ranked transport, housing, education and utilities. Ridgers said although the survey was based on expats' experiences, the factors were broad enough to apply to locals as well. London was joint 44th on 13 points along with Hong Kong, Lisbon, Madrid and San Francisco, while New York was 52nd on 16, equal with Dublin. Canada performed strongly with Toronto equal fourth with Vienna, Geneva and Zurich, while Montreal joined Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Oslo in eighth and Calgary was ranked 16th. New Zealand cities Auckland and Wellington were both ranked 24th. Let the internecine squabbling begin!

Lurkette, that article makes me froth at the mouth!!
Melbourne is nice... if you like grey. everything in Melbourne is grey. the buildings, the weather, the mood, the yarra river (well, no thats brown), the dirty sand and the clothes. you´ll never, ever find a Sydneysider agreeing with that clearly biased poll. having been to Vancouver, i´d say it should be in the top ten, but not above Sydney. as for putting Perth above Sydney, and then ranking Adelaide and BrisVegas as equal is just insulting. i´m shocked that anyone would even consider that!! btw, has anyone had a guess at where The Age is published?? its a Melbourne daily... nuff said! a number of people have called Melbourne the asshole of the earth... i disagree, but they´re not far off, since the asshole of the earth is really Port Augusta.

This was the point of my original post.
NOWHERE ever beats "home". But if you take that as a given, then the best city in the world? I'd say Sydney. But I've also heard of the following: Toronto New York San Francisco Paris Rome Tokyo I'd like to try them all, having visited every one apart from Tokyo. The two things Sydney has over and above all of the above are price (much cheaper than any of them, unless you are trying to buy a house) and the beach. Oh God, the beach. Bondi and string bikinis... enough said. Mr Mephisto PS - I'm not Australian, so I'm not biased but I agree 100% with bundy. Melbourne sucks choads. Grey, grey, grey, wet, cold, grey, boring, grey, pompous, grey and just generally a very ugly city. Sydney is actually a very beautiful city what with the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House etc. |

Didn't live in Sydney but lived for a few months in Mossvale, near Sydney. Love Sydney as a tourist, however I doubt I could live there for my whole life. It's just not home. Home for me is a town in Northern Australia (Darwin) home to about 100 000. Yes I love it. I'm currently studying in Brisbane at uni, and although there are many more opportunities here its not home, and its not as good as my home town. When deciding the qualities of a city personal experiences have a massive factor in the result.

Never been to Sydney. (Well, I have been to Sydney Nova-Scotia twice, but believe me, it aint the same.)
But i know a VERY VERY cute girl from Sydney Aus. (Her nick-name is Sydney.) She spent a couple years in Toronto before Canada immigration caught up with her and booted her out. She's now in the UK, but hoping (and so am I) to come back to Toronto next year. She's a hell of a girl. I also knew (very briefly if you know what i mean) a girl from Brisbaine (spelling) Australia. She was also very beautiful and sexy, but a bit of a drinker. (Canadian guys go nuts for those girls with Australian accents.) I would love to go to Australia one day and see the place. I often thought if I couldn't live in Canada, I would think Australia would be a close second though John Howard is a bit of a freak in my eyes. I am not quite sure i understand how you guys elected him. Been to London UK (and London ontario) and London UK is without a doubt an amazing place to be. More so than New York city in my eyes. I could live in London, temporarily live in Manhattan (only). I like London better than New York. It just feels better there that's all i can say. But New York is a great city too, don't get me wrong. I am not originally from Toronto but been living here for about 10 years. I have to say, it's a hell of a great place to live in North America. Diverse, hip, urban, alive, safe. Toronto is a collection of neighbourhoods and the people here never cease to amaze me. My car broke down, and two of my neighbours offered me the keys to their cars to use. I travel on business and when i come home, my lawn has been cut or my snow shovelled. You are walking down a side street and complete strangers say hi. People from the rest of Canada often say it's an unfriendly city, well, nothing could be further from the truth. I could never move back to my home town now. What did Robin Williams call Canada, America Lite or something like that. |
