Tiger mauls Roy (of Siegfried & Roy)
This one's pretty gruesome. Siegfried & Roy were performing their usual show Friday night at the Mirage in Las Vegas, when a tiger (making its first appearance in the show) lunged at Roy's neck about half-way through the show and dragged him off stage.
He's currently in critical condition. http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/10/0...ked/index.html |

I hope they don't kill the tiger.
I remember as a kid going to the circus and watching them have tigers do tricks and everything...I loved it. But remember, It's a tiger..Something that could pretty much take your face off with one swipe of his paw. I have total respect for the trainers who can train these big kitty's to be friendly...but...I don't care if this tiger has been under human care since birth..It's still a tiger that has the killing instict..and the risk of it eating you for lunch is always there. It mentioned that it was a white tiger...So it was a siberian tiger, A tiger that is almost extinct. If these people want to risk doing shows with a predator animal, That's fine by me...But when it turns on them, They can't blame the animal. That's what they do..There hunters. I really hope this tiger can just be sent to some kind of shelter where they take care of these beautifull cats..and keep them safe from pochers or whatever those guys are called. As fascinating as it is to see humans interacting with such a dangerous animal...I don't think it's right, These things belong in the wild..Or in the shelters away from pochers like I said above. I know and you know what the risks are of an animal like this turning on it's trainers...And when the tiger does decide he's had enough of that whip...Your gonna know it. I will be livid if I read that they put the tiger down.

That's what they get for screwing with one of natures most beautiful creatures. Tiger should have killed him too. I would have.

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Maybe they won't fuck with wild animals anymore. Hope he's okay though, and I hope they don't kill the tiger.

"A Taste For Roy"
a true story by Anleja On stage, getting ready to perform before a crowd of 1,500, Siegfried looked at Roy. Roy looked at Siegfried. They gave each other a mutual smile. Soon they would bring out the tiger. The tiger was Roy's idea, decades ago. "Gentle creatures" he told Siegfried. "Nothin' but big pussy cats. Their hearts are 100 times the size of their teeth." And gentle creatures they proved themselves to be, show after show after show. Sometimes they even let the tigers sleep between them in their shared triple-king-sized bed. After they smiled at each other, they looked to the crowd and smiled some more, raising their arms to greet the fans. To welcome them to a show they would never forget. Meanwhile, the tiger was sleeping in his cage to the side of the stage. He was having a dream. Africa. Running free. Eating fresh hot animal flesh and washing it down with tongue laps of water. In the dream, the tiger stared at the water as he drank it. After this, he was going to hump some lady tiger. All was well. Then, in his dream, he saw Siegfried and Roy rise up out of the water as if they were stanging on big bubbles. Before the tiger could comprehend what was happening, Roy leaped onto his back and restrained his head with a chain in the mouth as Siegfried looked into the tiger's eyes and said "there there kitty, just a little shot to put you to sleep." The tiger saw the syringe, and as soon as he felt the needle touch his skin... ...the tiger woke from his dream to the sound of 1,500 screaming humans. He heard his cage being opened by one of Siegfried and Roy's 250 assistants. The assistant held in his hand a slab of bloody cow meat. "Here ya go, ya big furry bum," said the assistant as he handed the tiger the cow meat. "Eat up, you're on in five." The tiger slowly chewed the cow meat as he looked at Roy talking to the audience. "We have for you tonight an evening of wonder, an evening of enchanment," Roy was saying to the audience through his microphone. Suddenly something strange happened. Even though he was eating cow meat, it suddenly started to taste like how Roy smelled. An odd mixture of vanilla and sweat and... so tender. As the tiger chewed the meat, he stared at Roy, imagined his tenderness, his flavor. "Bring on the tiger," cried Siegfried. Suddenly the tiger was once agin hit with the nightly ritual of stimuli, the lights, the cheering, the excitement... and a new sensation: a taste for revenge. A taste for escape. A taste for Roy. "Down, my friend," said Roy, looming over him like a storm cloud, smiling. I said... DOWN!" As he said these words, he brought his microphone to the tiger's nose, tapping and tapping and tapping and... Roy screamed as his body was flung like it never had been flung before. The tiger suddenly felt many years of the frustration of being captive lifted off his large muscular shoulders. He would be no one's prisoner from now on. As they sprayed him with a fire extinguisher, he let go. He licked his lips clean. A taste of Roy. The tiger looked at a terrified Siegfried and thought to himself: "Who's smiling now, motherfucker." |

K... I don't pay attention to the news that often, though I was just reading the story about Zigfreid and Roy.
I suppose I was amused, in a sick way, by this line... "Many in the audience thought the scene unfolding before them was part of the show..." Why would someone think that a 550 lb White Tiger that grabbed it's trainer's (Roy) arm and then proceeded to carry the trainer off the stage by the neck part of a show??? I know it's sick but seriously... I don't think I'd imagine seeing a tiger carrying a human by the neck would be a part of any show. But I have to agree with previous posts that tapping tigers on the nose with a microphone would be kinda stupid.

^^ Same thing I was thinkin man. I guess it was denile that made them think that like "OMG this can't be happening...it must be part of the show" deep down knowing "YES THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING" they're just holding on to that glimmer of hope.

Blah Blah, sympathy... x2..
The real question is, when will the jokes emerge about this incident? First thing my boss asked me this morning when I walked into the kitchen was, "hey, you got any good Seigfried and Roy jokes?" That was only the begining, the rest of the day was hell. His greatest culmination was, and I quote - "Oh man, the other day I was at this chinese restaurant, they use so much soy sauce, its almost like Roy sauce!" .. then silence. .. the impatient pause, waiting for the crowd to laugh. .. .. .. .. Someone has to have something better then that! |

That one is really stupid. Makes no sense at all. Does give new meaning to the phrase "Here kitty kitty" though. (do the drum thingy!) perhaps if they brought him out like that he woulda just purred softly and started doing figure eights around his legs.

Some things said here were really cold. He didn't deserve that. Those of you who complain that they keep tigers working and it's cruel, that's an understandable complaint. But, think about the positives, Seigfried and Roy have donated tons for the species. They've raised awareness, money, fed, nurtured, and helped hundreds of tigers.
Sixate, I wasn't surprised by your comment. Your comment in the kangaroo thread was equally as tasteless. As for the rest of you, "he deserved it"-ers, I'm disgustingly surprised. I've seen the show once. I enjoyed it; I'm not a crazy or obsessed fan. I just found comments by a lot of you distasteful and disrespectful.

I'm surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.
No, he didn't "deserve" it, but he sure should have seen it coming. You can't play with a big predatory slab of muscle and sharp bits and not expect to get hurt. Like IC3 said, play with fire and you're going to get burnt.

If tigers hadn't killed people in the first place, S&R wouldn't have had a show. The show consists of people gasping at two Germans not getting eaten.
If tigers didn't kill people, S&R wouldn't have made all that cash. When something like this happens, it's more irony than tragedy. And while it's a human being we're talking about, I don't see why this is so terrible to laugh at. Nobody here's making money off it, it's not like the Darwin awards. And while I thought it was pretty awful in the first place, it kind of turned funny when I found out about the microphone detail. I'm interested that there seems to be a lot more compassion for this dude than the chick who got killed in a boxing match a while back... I'd say that of the two, this guy was taking the bigger risk. Personally I wouldn't call either of them stupid, or say they deserved it. Sure, what they did was certainly risky, but life with no risks would be boring.

Just for the record...it was a Bengal Tiger, not a siberian (at least I'm 90% sure).
This whole situation does suck. Only cause they may put the tiger to sleep. Sure it sucks about Roy getting mauled, but like it has been said many a times in this thread....play with fire..... |

I can't believe that there isn't a video of the attack out on the internet yet. Or is there???? As far as my reaction to this.... I dont think he deserved this... but, I am not shocked by it either. The only thing I regret is that the Detroit Tigers don't have that much killer instinct.

I Actuvlly heard on the radio that of all the tigers, the siberian is the furthest from extintion. (interesting timing to have that little science gem on the radio) So of course, I had to know the stats for myself. I found the link to the report through the radio stations (www.ckua.com) site. Here's the report I heard. http://www.earthsky.com/Shows/Latest/ Siberian Tiger The Amur tiger and the indigenous people of Russia's far east coexisted peacefully for centuries. But in the early 1900s, during the building of the Chinese Eastern railroad, tigers in eastern Russia were hunted to near extinction. Siberian tigers today -- on today's Earth and Sky. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, October 6, 2003 Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) Photo courtesy of Allen Matheson at Photohome.com This is Earth and Sky. A century ago, there were eight different subspecies of tiger -- now only five kinds are left. And they're all in danger of becoming extinct. The tiger with the best chance of survival might be the Siberian, or Amur tiger -- the biggest cat in the world. It lives in a harsh, remote habitat in the woodlands of Far Eastern Russia. The Amur is lucky. Its cousin, the Bengal tiger of India and Southeast Asia is getting crowded out by the ever-expanding human population. But eastern Russia is relatively unpopulated. And Amur tiger hunting was banned as early as 1947. In recent years, tiger poaching has been curbed by international cooperation. Today there are thought to be about 500 Amur tigers left in the wild. The biggest threat to their survival is the logging industry. An adult male tiger needs about a thousand square kilometers -- about 400 square miles -- of territory. Cutting down large stretches of forest reduces the size and quality of the habitat -- not just for the tiger, but also for its prey -- wild boar and elk. The Siberian Tiger Project wants to protect Amur tigers. Their strategy focuses on logging practices that protect forested corridors between tiger preserves. Thanks today to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We're Block and Byrd for Earth and Sky. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Author(s): Eleanor Imster <<>> And from http://greenfield.fortunecity.com/tiger/6/facts.html Of the five remaining tiger subspecies, three - Sumatran, Siberian, and South Chinese - are considered critically endangered. Two species - Bengal and Indochinese - are endangered. All the white tigers in captivity spring from a single cat captured in central India in 1952. There are no known white tigers now in the wild. All white tigers are Bengal tigers. <<>> |
