How many songs have you downloaded for free? Lets see what people have to say.
This question is being raised based on other posts about lawsuits agaist "file sharing" people.
It is intended to narrow the responses down to an actual number. So that we can all see the scope of what has been happeneing to the recording industry. Please be completely honest about the number of songs you have downloaded. I can hardly wait to see your response, thanks Skippy |
over 10000.
Less than 30. What I liked, I bought, and what I didn't, I deleted.
I, myself, have downloaded whatever 8 gigs would be and ALL GOT ERASED IN A REFORMATATION!
I currently have one song downloaded, lol. (swing, swing for those wondering) |
about 2000
I buy cd of bands I like, though |
i have 9782 songs which comes out to approximately 48 Gb
I don't know the actual number. 30 gigs worth though.
64. File sharing sucks on macs.
Maybe 2 or 3 gigs...I don't download music anymore. I don't even have a P2P program installed on my machine...I buy all my CD's.
SPY SPY SPY for the RIAA!!!!!!!!!!
hehehe just kidding... ive got 3 or 4 gigs of mp3s... almost no full albums unless i own and ripped that album myself... |
around a thousand
I've got 10 or so albums worth, but I tend to just prefer buying CDs. I use the file sharing stuff to listen to an album before I go out an buy it. Saves me from buying a shitty album with one or two good songs on it.
hrm..
mp3's - we just got a 120 gig HD for them because the 80 gigs was almost full... how much of that is downloaded or how much is from the 200+ cd's we have, i've no idea. perhaps half/half. |
Probably about 500 or so. I'm now working my way back through them, to decide to either buy legit copies, delete, or keep. Mostly cleaning out the illegal stuff.
Oh, then I have a whole bunch of legitimately downloaded free music... which could absolutely never be sold. Try out freespeechforsale.com and dictionaraoke.com for a few laughs. |
619 songs, I only download what I like. And one of these days I will buy CD's again...when the RIAA stops inflating prices and burns in hell.
Actually to be completely honest i have barely any, maybe 10 or so.
I have just over 1000 songs; only keep the ones i like. Like I know a lot of people who will download like 5 different albums just because they like the one song. Plus.. i don't want my iPod filling up.
3 gigs.
about 11 gigs total, 2 gigs were ripped and the rest dloaded.
IF YOU ARE THE RIAA$$: I DID NOT WRITE THAT, IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE |
I had around 240, then I formated, now I have about 60. My comp is currently without sound (broke it somehow), so thats more or less the reason.
I have never downloaded a song. I don't feel ripping off an artist is my right. The record company - er, artist - deserves every penny they work for.
*receives pat on head and a nice doggy biscuit from the RIAA* |
5047 on my hd right now. I have downloaded more but they were crap so I deleted them.
about 2000 or so.
I also have all of my CD's and all of my roomates cd's (that we own) for another 5200 songs or so. |
less than 1000 most of which i havent listen to yet, and will probly delete cause i'm not sure what they are. most of the time i just listen to net radio
zero.
every time i try kazaa or something, it just doesn't work. firewall here at work, and i am inept. any pointers? |
I really don't know... All I know is I stopped buying CD's a while ago. When there's an album I want I wait until I know someone who has it and I rip and/or burn it. I don't really download a lot of music.
bout 1000ish
too many to count. i really have no idea, but it's a lot. i've also only listened to about 10% of what i download, and end up just deleting the rest.
I have maybe 200 songs... and those are either singles that I downloaded, or friends CDs that I've ripped. So I guess I have probably 150 downloaded songs.
Quote:
Er, and I've downloaded approximately 1200. My morals suck ass. |
I'm actually a bit surprised how much people have downloaded. No wonder the RIAA complains so much. I've probably downloaded 60 over 4 years. I'm not particular to my music, just load up Music Match and whatever is on I listen to. I can see 2-3 thousand on computers of music nuts. I guess it's just me because without file sharing or online radios I probably would have bought at most 6 cd's over the span of 4 years.
23 - All were songs I looked for in stores but could not find to buy them (otherwise I would've bought them).
(When's the last time you saw the Focus album with the song Hocus Pocus on it in a store? Me, never.) |
Maybe 50...probably more around 20-30. I have 400 MP3s, and most of the songs I d/l are songs from CD's I already own, or from Cassettes I had bought long time ago.
The one's I have d/l that I don't have CD's for are songs that are impossible to find to buy (Counting Crows - Einstein on the Beach...What f'n CD is that on anyways???) and some songs from one-hit wonders who don't deserve my money for a whole CD with one good song on it. |
Not a lot anymore, too lazy to download stuff.
I know people who have like 50000 though. |
10,950 on my hard drive
About 3 large underbed cases weighing in at 20+ pounds each of CDs But I do buy t-shirts, concert tickets, posters and stuff from the ones I like. EDIT: I weighed myself, and then with one of the boxes. It is 25 pounds, so however many songs fit into 75 pounds of cds (plus jewel cases) |
i never got into the music deal music. i have a hundred or so, many on my stereo bought.
i have done the book thing, though. i got fuckin gigs of audio books and crave more. not to mention my true passion... |
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1600 right now. Get more constantly.
Somewhere around 1200 for me.........
Downloaded around 1000, ripped around 500 more from my own CDs.

Throughout my teenage years and into my early 20's I spent a lot of hard earned money on vinyl and tapes. Approx. 350 tapes and 400 records. When I found out I could download all those tunes off the net I went nuts and did it. Don't feel a bit of shame or remorse about it either cause there is no way in hell I'm gonna pay all over again for cds to replace all those records and tapes.
Last time I checked I was a little over 4000 mp3s. |
over a 1000 songs in my time...not that many
100s
maybe 1000s hard to say heheheh |
Ive got like 300 - 400 songs... dont know the exact figure
Quite a few, I like to check out lots of different music. I tend to buy the stuff I like though.
Two 40 gig drives full, movies and music
whatever happened to hotline for mac? the first and last time i saw it was about 6 or 7 years ago, but it looked pretty cool... I think that was my first exposure to p2p filesharing come to think of it...
I've got somewhere between 5000 and 7000 mp3s on a hard drive around here, plus 15 mp3 cds full that i can't seem to find anymore. And I've downloaded less than 20 songs in the past year. Most of my mp3 downloading was done in the days of napster, of which I was amongst the first users (on a 56k, no less... or should i say no more). |
about 2000. but with all the ones i deleted because i got tired of them...closer to 3000
iunno prolly a few hundred,
I don't have any *albums* on mp3 that I didn't buy. All of the full-albums I have were already bought on CD. I do have about 200 songs that I didn't pay for - no band having more than two or three songs that I've downloaded from them. I refuse to pay twenty fucking dollars for a single good song and 10 other shitty songs. Put out a good album, I'll buy it. If not, I'll download your one decent one and that's that.
I have about 134.7
I fucking hate listening to a newly downloaded song to find out I got only part of the file... sonsabitches! |
I've got 2000-3000 and have listened to all of them...hard to tell exactly cuz I've got some duplication in my directory structure. I've purchased exactly one CD in my entire life--Audioslave.
Yes it is stealing. Yes I will continue to do it as long as technically feasible. Meh. |
I have less than 50, I doubt much, if any of it is even RIAA related stuff, but if I had a fast connection I'd download a whole heap of pop just to rub it in their well-fed faces.
probably about a hundred. i delete the ones i end up getting tired with so usually have about 40 or so at any given time.
I d/l about 5000 over the years. A new album comes out and someone recommends it -- I just d/l the entire thing -- No harm, no foul -- if I don't like it, I'll just delete it...
Overall I've probably downloaded around 400... Friends have sent me music online as well.
On my hard drive now I only have about 100 or so. And none sharing ;) I always buy albums that I like. |
One. Hubby has downloaded quite a few but I don't listen to that much music and and usually not picky about who I listen to. It all depends on my mood and the kind of music and rarely on whether I like the performer or not. Often I just listen to the radio or one of our several hundred CD's. I have such a wide variety of tastes that I don't bother spending the time or drive space on Music that I can get somewhere else without the work. The only one I downloaded I lost in a drive reformatt. It was an older song that I couldn't find very easily. It's been so long since that too I don't even remember the title well. Something like Wayfaring Travelor. It just seemed a little hard to find the traditional playing of it on a CD.
Several hundred. I made them available on Napster but got rid of Kazaa due to the pop-ups, etc.
I had about 2,000 but just reformatted my HDD and decided to wipe 'em.
I live in Canada so the RIAA can't touch me... I just listen to Radio Paradise now @ www.radioparadise.com :D |
20 or so over the past three or four years from Morpheus and some crap websites - 99.9% of my multi-gig collection is from Emusic.com or my own encoding jobs.
I've got about 1500 songs on MP3. On the other hand, I have about 900 CD's. I have bought plenty to keep the RIAA happy.
Of the MP3's, I usually buy the CD if the songs are worth a crap. Alot of the songs I have downloaded I now have the CD's for. I actually think CD sales would be down more without all of the file sharing. There are alot of people that I would have never heard if it wasn't for Napster / Kazaa / etc. |
hEY EVERYONE
Thanks for all of your submissions , I really appreciate your honesty. I used to have hundreds of songs but found that I never listened to them. I know that the RIAA doesn't give a shit about wheather or not your actually listen to the songs. All they care about it whether you have the songs. Which I am sure you agree is complete bull%^$@. Since I aquired digital cable for my home I listen to any one of the hundreds of comercial free "CD quality" stations that they offer as a part of the package. The funny part is that m new digital pckage offers more music for a lower price. ( I am paying for the TV anyhow the music is free) It's funny that you can't find Metallica anywhere on the digital system. Those losers are so worried about me downloading their songs ... and they aren't even good enough to get picked up by any of the hundreds of digital stations availble nationally. I figure that good music sells and crap won't. G'day Skippy |
Around 300 or so.
All of my songs have been downloaded for free....its the best price in town
Around 1000 songs. Lately I can't seem to find anymore music that is worth downloading.

As far as album mp3's, I'm not sure. I don't really keep anything but bootlegs. My main reason for d/l-ing mp3's is to either get the album before it comes out or to see if I want to buy it. After that I usually get rid of them. I'd say I have maybe 3 cd's of (studio)album mp3's. Bootlegs I prob. have about 20-25 cd's (mp3 format, not decompressed and burned). |
i have download "enough" or "sufficient" amount to satisfy my needs :D
Spidey. I appreciate your candor. I used to have a few thousand files but now I haven't got any. I just didn't listen to the music. I also don't buy any more commercialy produced CD's unless I buy them from the band I have gone to see. Live music rules!
I also have Cable radio at home... that makes a huge difference. |
i fully understand what you mean by not listening to them anymore. I mean seriously if you have over 2000 mp3s thats roughly a billizion hours of music and no way on earth would anyone be capable of listening to all that. I believe the one true reason why people have so many is for bragging rights. I mean i notice this being a common topic among friends, "i have x number of mp3s which is more than you y number of mp3s etc etc"
There is a movment in Canada to have an additional tax added to the sale of any blank media (tapes, CD'S, etc). This money would be given to the recording industry to offset copyright imfringment losses from downloading MP3's and copying CD's and DVD's. To me, this represents a "download/copy fee". I will never buy another pre-recorded CD.
not too many.
iīd say about 50. its not that i consider it theft... i donīt... but i only have a dial-up. which means that it takes me about 15mins to download per song on Kazaa Lite. i just canīt be bothered most of the time. |
id say about 2 gigs worth
6.37 GB for 1131 songs. Most were downloaded from the old Usenet newsgroups, few (less than 100) via p2p.
i have about 1000 songs maybe a little more
Looks like about 12 Gigs...
6 Gigs of various stuff for an Internet radio show I used to do. 6 Gigs of Country Music because that's what I'm listening to now. |
None for me. All mine are CD's.
Not nearly as many as I have. I share a dedicated server at work with a few other and between we've ripped ourselves, and downloaded, we have a little over 68GB.. Granted some of it isn't my taste, but we have access. I would ponder a guess that I personally have probably dl'd 3,000-4,000.
Ive got somewhere near 9000 songs downloaded
Seeing as i have over 100 music CD's STORE BOUGHT, and then about 20~ cds or so dl'ed from certain non-p2p places ;P
I feel that is entirerly in the margin of fair. Because about them 20 that are not bought, the over priced cost for the 100 purchased them 20. I refuse to use p2p due to the political BULLSHIT that they can get away with for gaining your information. |
900 or so
I've got about 200 cd's and 40 GB of legally downloaded jamband (phish, grateful dead, etc.) concert recordings (all in shn, no sound loss like mp3). There are a lot of bands that allow and even encourage people to record their shows and distribute them freely. Check out www.etree.org or www.furthurnet.com to see.
Holy Shit! some of you guys....wow....:p
I have a little over two gig. Of that, about half is personally ripped stuff from my CDs; 1/4 of it is radio and television stuff I've downloaded (Monty Python skits; comedy shows) and the rest is illegally downloaded stuff. I run it on my computer in between checks to see what I like. 10,000 songs?!?! how in the heck do you listen to all that? Wow :) |
between 2500 and 3000, 30-40gigs worth... probably due to an inordinant amount of radio mixes (radio 1 essential mix, digweed @ kiss100, festival recordings, etc. etc). Contrary to what some have said, every song ive download i enjoy, and will listen to at any given time. Just depends on the mood. I purchase a fair amount of cd's, but a lot of what i get are b sides, unreleased tracks, or foreign releases, much of which never finds its way to the US. I dunno, i feel justified for the most part.

I am glad that you mentioned this point.. I had forgotten all about it. AND I AGREE COMPLETELY that it is a download fee as far as I am concerned. Skippy |
RIAA Sucks! They could have hopped onboard the mp3 craze and profited from it instead of fighting it. They deserve what they get!
p.s. 2500 Songs and counting! |
Oh i didnt really state in my previous post, i've got 5019 to be exact. most of which are legal tho.
I know a few friends who have well over 50-120 GIG. Now they have a lot. |
Well, I have about 2,500+ mp3s... But some are ripped from CDs I own, and others technically were downloaded bymy friends... so, hard to say.
Probably 75-100
Downloading songs kind of sucks when you only have dial up. |
Only about 300.
Havent did it for over 6 months but id say about 6 gigs worth
I have 2000 songs. . .all legal. You can test to see if it's safe here: RIAA Radar. Now I get free music and they can't bitch at me for anything.
200 I feel like artist don't make money on cd's just the record producers!! Artist make money on concerts and promo stuff!!!
For all us mac users, try out Poisoned, a P2P app which uses the FastTrack network, same as Kazaa
634 and movies and clips i have over 100
i think i am at 700 all illeagal songs...it's a lot of obscure mixes and such that you can't get on cd
About 2 gigs worth. If they lowered the price of cd's I would dload' so much. If I like the music I'll buy the cd.
Around 3200. Saved to disk and off the hard drive for now, just in case. All done over a 56K mind you.
I have a grand total of 41 songs atm
ha dragon.. .im riding at 600 now.. you got dsl yet?
most of the time at about 1000 or so, i dl songs to see if they're any good, then i delete em if they're no good, and if they're decent at all..i buy em.
