Dixie Chicks Latest Faux Pas
The Dizzy Chicks have seen the bet and raised it three! The Chicks are posing nude on the cover of Entertainment Weekly- The sisters are standing in front of (maybe trying to hide) Maines but it didn't help much. They have comments written on their 'bodies' procliming their cause - Think it'll help? Or hurt them even more than their previous experience with hoof and mouth disease?

I don't know, looks to me to be more media bullshit and hype... but if they are willing to get nekid on the front cover (I'd like to see some uncencored shots of this I'm all for it. It makes a statement, that's for sure.

To be quite honest, I could care less what some country pop stars have to say...to me their voice is meaningless. It's a corny publicity stunt, that their PR people created to make everybody remember their antics a few weeks ago. "Hey look at us! We're naked renegade popstars! Pleasegive us the attention thatwe think we deserve!" I don't know.

I'm still amazed that so many people are worried about what 3 country singers think.
I like their music. I don't care how they feel about politicians, the war, current events or arts & crafts. Magazine covers like that are never a bad thing. It will sell a few more issues, give them a chance to speak their mind....if you don't like them, don't buy the magazine and everybody wins.

I don't follow the hicky chiks so I don't know their names but the one on the right is smoking.
I like "Sin Wagon" but it's the only song I know the name of from them. I'll stick with ZZ Top, the Stones, and Arrowsmith.

I've never understodd why people were upset with them... Afterall don't they represent the best of America? The ability to say what's on your mind without fear of censorship?
Besides they are just musicians.

I'm not against any hollywood or music celebrity speaking out on the war...I just don't see why they're all being taken so seriously. Anyone else notice on Fark.com how many stories have musicians and movie stars giving their opinions on the war? Paul McCartney even criticized the military tactics we used! My question is when the hell did these people become political analysts?

We argued over that on the old board. Hey LD - I told you she wasn't fat any more! As far as the publicity stunt - they're probably smart enough to have figured out that the best way to get back into a man's good graces is by giving him a hard-on. That's a pretty universal truth - right, guys?

Celebrities aren't less qualified than Joe Sixpack, but they aren't any MORE qualified either. They can sing well, act well etc. When they go out of their area of expertise, I would hope that all of us would be open-minded enough to take what they say with a grain of salt. |

Just wanted to add (and it's a completely different thought - THAT'S why I didn't use the edit button):
Is that cover real? The more I look at the picture, the more I am thinking, "That is very, very hot." I mean, other than a (possibly) strategically placed patch of material, Natalie is pretty damn nekkid!

I think they have great bodies and I know sex sells. But personally I think that using their bodies in this way to promote their ideals actually distracts from the message they are trying to send. What does their nudity really have to do with speaking out against war? I can think about many other ways they could get the message across without blurring it with their bodies. Maybe there's a message in there I didn't get but I think they should have maybe done it another way. I know I would listen closer if it weren't combined with nudity. There are many people out there who are against public nudity and even soft porn that will completely block out this particular message simply because of how it was presented. Still the picture is artistic and they have lovely bodies - I can't help but enjoy it. I just think they would have made more impact another way.

I am kinda shocked they did that. But I like it. I have tickets to a sold out concert of theirs and I am wondering how that will go.
I didn't think Natalie was that skinny, she looks good for having a baby recently.

I have never been a fan. The attention that they're getting has more to do with the fact that they're nude than what they said.
Our culture (Americana) is so pre-occupied with star-worship and the like that their message is lost. Ask most people about the Dixie Chicks and they'll be aware of them posing nude but won't be aware of what they said to get them this attention. What do you expect from a nation where more people watch the Super Bowl than vote in an election?

Wow - the heifer has dropped a few pounds - still has a way to go. The one on the right is cute, and I'd be interested in finding out if the one on the left has something tucked between her legs.
I could not stand them before their latest faux pas/publicity stunt, and feel the same way now about them. |

I was out of the country when the original statement was made and I was not getting a lot of the news, so I kind of aware of this whole controversy in the late stages. But I feel like I need to make a few points to overcome some misunderstandings about the issues involved.
1) The right to free speech as guarenteed in the US constitution does not apply in England where the statements were made. 2) The right to free speech does not absolve the speaker of any consequences for making certain statements. All it means, is that the government will not impose sanctions on the speaker. Private citizens are free to impose any sanctions they want. The right to free speech does not extend to the right to eternally sold out concert venues and best selling records. 3) I don't have any respect for celebrities who use their publicity capital to make ad hominem attacks on those they disagree with. They certainly have a right to make those statements, but they will fall in my estimation. I don't have any problem with celebrities using there position to champion causes I disagree with, as long as they do so with some degree of logic and intellectual honesty. 4) As an American, if you want to make negative comment on official government policy, do it on American soil. Don't belittle US leaders or policy overseas in order to sell more albums. These kind of actions (not so much in this case) are used for propoganda by oppressive regimes. That can come close to treason when it reaches Jane Fonda levels. 5) A rap or pop artist would have little or no career problems after a statement like this. If you are in country music, you should know your audience. I don't think their fans are going to forgive them.

My comment was about how a celeb can say they're pro-war, and everyone is fine with it, but if they say they're anti-war, all of the sudden people are coming out of the woodwork about how they're unqualified to make comment on international affairs. No one seems to question the policy knowledge of those celebs who take a pro-Bush stance.
I think it's silly that some celebs are acting like their free speech is being infringed on over reactions to their anti-war stances. But my comment was more about how many people don't have a problem with celebs speaking their minds, until they start disagreeing with the celeb.
