caring for a baby squirrel
So a little squirrel was found under our jeep today, we decided to take care of it, it's a grey squirrel probably with about a 5 inch body excluding the tail, so it is still very adolescant. Anyone know how to care for something like this? It's the cutest thing ever and very playful, we've just been feeding it 2% and now we got some buttermilk for it.
Any suggestions? :P |

Let it go soon, or take it to an animal shelter. If you keep feeding it, it wont learn to survive in the wild and you can't keep an adult squirrel as a pet (I'm not sure where you live, but some states have laws for that). It's mom probably wont want it back because its been handled, so just take it to an animal shelter.

I think it was kicked out of the nest, we found some racoons in our yard and did the same thing. Dunno what the cat would do, but we showed it to the dog and the dog just chomped on it, so no more of that.
If we let it go now it would die, it dosen't have its teeth yet and dosen't eat solid foods. |

I've got good news and I've got bad news.
First, the good news! I found a website all about taking care of baby squirrels. Now, the bad news. Quote:

I always secretly knew cow milk was -made- for humans. See if you can find a Wildlife Rescue type organisation in your area. It may not be too late.

I almost had a Squirrel once. I was taking summer courses at UC Berkeley, and I had some popcorn. I was hanging outside one of the halls, and I started feeding this one that was by me. I came back, and I swear, this thing knew who I was, and came out when I called him. I want a squirrel really bad now :'(

I've raised a baby squirrel, he was the only an inch long when we found him and by the time we let him go he was fully frown.
It is very important to feed them goats milk with an eye dropper. Unsalted nuts etc, and organic vegtables. Goats milk is a must and you can get it in most specialty stores. Regular milk will hurt their stomachs and give them serious problems later in life. We use to keep ours in a shoe box and then a bird cage as he got older wtih some ceder branches in it. He still comes around, its over a yar later now, and will sit on our shoulder and take sunflower seeds from us. Give them as much stimulation as possible (hiding thier food, placing their cage; safely, away from predetors outdoors, so they will remain wild enough to be let go) As they get older, the males get violent and you will relaize they don't make good pets. I wish you the best with the little guys.

wow, thats really cool. The picture is adorable. As to squirrels being rats, I had pet rats, and they were great. I had one in my apartment building that was strictly taboo. Rather than trying to hide the cage I just let him live on the balcony and he would hide in the leaves whenever strangers came around. Hooded rats make great pets. Just because they are vermin doesn't make em bad pets.
by the way, where have all the black squirels gone, I knew they were being outbread, but damd, are they all gone now?
