Post Counts
I first found the TFP last May or so. I would go every so often but did not register. I was shy and did not want to input any personal data. I had never gone to chat rooms or discussion boards before. Then I got a web based E-mail address and signed up around July. After a brief period I found it was easy to post and my count rose quickly as I input my two cents into a lot of threads.
Over time, I felt like what I was going to post was not really adding anything to what was alread there, so I would just not post it. I was not really interested in piling up posts. With the advent of TFP v 4.0 I am posting a lot more everyday and I really don't think it is just to accumulate a post count. I do want an avatar back because it makes it easier to find yourself in threads, but other than that, I am not that concerned. I think it is just easier to have something worthwhile to say when the threads are new again and fewer in number. It is also important to show appreciation to those who are creating threads for the TB. Does anyone else feel the same way? |

I do... alot of the time someone has already said what I thought so I don't bother to post... I figure no one wants to read the same thing over and over again. The artwork and photography forums in v.3 was my main place for expression.

I definitely agree. Occasionally I feel like some threads turn into long strings of people basically saying "I agree" or "Yes, that's true," but not saying much more than that. There are lots of threads that have good debates with many people giving valuable insight, but other times threads seem to go on without much discussion actually going on. With so many new threads, its much easier to add things to the discussions without it becoming repetative. Please don't take this the wrong way: I love TFP and it is by far the best discussion board I've come across, and the people here are great. What I'm struggling to say is that because we started over from scratch, people are trying to get their ideas out again, so they are generally putting more into their posts.

Yea but even if you are saying the same thing again (or even I agree) I will say it is nice if you are that first poster to see that others DO agree with you.

What really annoys me though is people who feel the need to post two times. Use the friggin edit button

I admit that I would like my avatar back, so I am 'contributing' at a more furious pace than I usually do - but - that said, I would contribute regardless.

I'm faring a little better. I was a little distraught having working myself back up to 700 posts, but I guess its worth it.
I figure if Hal and crew went to the trouble of putting it back up, It would be almost a disservice to not register and post again

Not really other then bragging rights. Well at 250 you get an avatar and at some point you get a custom title. Past that not really.
And yea I WOULD prefer if people posted more then just "I agree" BUT I would rather them post "I agree" then not post at all.

So, is this my cue to get in one more post?

Since I am consistantly scanning the board I hit threads I would like to respond to every few minutes but if I did I wouldn't get to the next one.
So I try and kick in steadily and regularly. One of the things about the new board is that people had favorite threads from the old one that they wanted to restart. Originallity is a lot to expect in one week. |

I post more (still not tons I know) because I've been able to follow all of the thread topics from the start and so don't feel as if I'm dredging up old stuff. And it was nice to have a level playing field.
But I'm glad I'll have to quit TFP in a couple of months (end of uni) as I can't help but feel that TFP is too addictive and that life is something you do, not something you talk about. Yeah yeah, I know that TFP is a 'real community' and that meeting new people and having conversations here is just as valid as doing so in the offline world. Nonetheless I can't help feeling that it isn't something I should get sucked into (maybe because of my addictive personality). And TFP has a lot of sucking power.

i do feel an excess of posts on tfp. and now more than ever, i don't bother reading posts with many replies because only 1 out of 5 replies are worthwhile. and i also don't like replying if there are more than 10 replies already. most likely i'd be repeating someone else (too often i'm too lazy to read the previous posts) and i think that after a while i think no one reads the replies.
overall.. i just feel less enthusiastic about tfp with tfp 4.0..... for one thing, i don't think i can keep up.. and i doubt anyone else could. i feel like people are going to quantity and not quality. and i especially hate that with titty board posts... when someone posts a bunch of threads at once with mediocre pr0n. i'd say that less than 10% of titty board posts are worthwhile. *sigh* |

I think most of us are just cranking the posts up to the magical Avatar Level, and we'll chill after that. I know that's my plan.
Right at the moment, though, it's true that we're trading quality for quantity. Expect that to change in a week or so. |

it is my opinion that emphasis on post counts lowers the quality of posts. conversely, de-emphasizing post counts increases the quality of site content.
if you think about it - it's a no brainer. there may be other reasons for post counts but I believe what I stated above is in accord with human nature.

Now theres an intelligent statement. Lets think about that one. If we spam the board to get our avatars back and then stop posting, whats the point of having an avatar. If you don't post after you hit 250, then nobody will see your avavtar. It will end up rotting away on the tfp server where nobody will ever see it. So come on people, post. Post like you mean it. Post something that will stir up emotions in others that once might have been dead. Take pride in what you write here, because like it or not, with every post that you do, we all get a better glimpse of who we really are. And if you're constantly posting nothing or little braindead comments, well......

As usual -- Well said Wile E.
When I first joined TFP last year I posted at a furious pace for about 6 months or so. All I cared about was getting the post count up. But as the board expanded and the variety of forums emerged -- I found it fun and interesting to just browse through them and read what others hhad to say. I would add a comment if I felt like it but no longer felt I had to contribute.
