Six Degrees of Separation
So we are all supposed to be linked to one another through six degrees. everybody knows everybody on this planet through six degrees. Thats the theory anyways.
for those that don't know what i'm talking about - theres a theory thats been out there for quite some time that we are all connected through 6 people. like me knowing someone in say an obscure african town through some african guy i met while i was on vacation in honolulu. ill be connected to the people that this guy knows, and its refered to as one degree. try that six times and voila..we're all one big happy family..sort of anyways. after seeing the news a few weeks ago about the 'lost tribe' in the amazon, it got me thinking about the six degrees and whether its actually true. its a theory that could come pretty close at least. so anyways.. i thought id try this on tfp and see what results we get. so here goes i know george w bush through 2 degrees- i have a family friend who worked for the saudi king who knows george bush.

Nope, no connection with yours.
I know Doc Holliday through 1 degree. He is a distant uncle. Does that count? I know the Dalton Gang through 2 degrees. My ex-husband was related to them (his great grandmother still remembered the raid; her family members were in the gang) Did I get that right?

Six Degrees of Separation is a great film. Quite possibly one of Will Smith's best.

I know Valentina Tereshkova through 1 degree. My late co-worker's mom and she used to be friends. Same with Vladimir Titov.
Through the same co-worker (who used to be an ambulance EMT in St. Petersburg) , I know Igor Talkov - a Russian rock singer who was shot after his concert backstage. He was on an ambulance that took him to the hospital. I think that's about it.

You're all one degree from John Bohstedt, who tackled the shooter at the Knoxville church shooting on Sunday.
I'm one degree from Cybil Sheppard - one of my college friends was her personal assistant after graduation. And she knows Jeff Bridges. Who knows John Goodman. Who went to rehab with one of my cousins. So I'm back to me. I'm the center of the universe. Suck it, Kevin Bacon.

Twenty years ago I worked at a pharmacy that also had burgers/sandwiches/drinks. Linda Evans came in twice, and one time I made her a tuna sandwich.
So I guess all of you know Linda Evans by 2 degrees.

My uncle married a woman who used to be married to Craig Frost of Grand Funk Railroad, now with Bob Seger. Her daughter is my step-cousin.
Me > my step cousin > Craig Frost > Bruce Kulick (currently with Grand Funk, formerly of KISS) > Gene Simmons. How cool is that?

1. Dad
2. Rafik Hariri (former premier of Lebanon, from my dad's hometown. They knew each other professionally too). 3. Dubya 4. Saudi King 5. Dlish's friend 6. Dlish's So 6 degrees . Of course, Hariri worked a lot with the Saudi king, so no need to go through Dubya. So 5 degrees. And since we're both Lebanese, I'm sure there's an even closer connection somewhere. Actually, now that I think about it, since we know each other, we're 1 degree apart. Proceed. |

My wife went to school with Sandra Bullock, so 2 degrees. A former boss went to high school with Kirstie Alley, 2 degrees. I produced a CNN reporter who is 1 degree from almost everybody in DC. I worked with former congressman and actor Fred "Gopher" Grandy, so 1 degree from him, he knows Bush, who knows the Saudi king, who knows Dlish's friend, who knows Dlish's, so that's 5. In fact, living in the DC area and having worked in the media, I'm 1 step from Bush in several ways, but have only seen his house from the outside. The bastard.
I'm 2 degrees from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin. 1 degree from George Noory and Laura Ingraham. I'm also 1 degree from John Denver, but he's dead. I also work for Bruce Hornsby. So I'm one degree from him and 2 from the Grateful Dead.

My aunt(mom's sister) is Isabella Rossilini's former agent. She was also Tula's(the British transgender Bond girl) agent. So I guess that makes me 4 degrees to James Bond. Feast on THAT, Willravel!!
My mom's cousin was a former call girl who knew both Joe Namath(says he was boring) and Tom Jones(says he was a horny bastard), so same level to those two. |

Now, if i had a such a connection, however distant, i would certainly not mention it in public. I dunno about this. It doesn't seem that remarkable. I know lots of people who know Obama. I used to live in his adopted Chicago neighbourhood, and his first political sponsor is someone i've had dinner with on several occasions. My hi-school buddy's ex-girlfriend is a Hollywood character actor & sister of a bigger star, so through her i know everyone in Hollywood. Through my editor, i know every intellectual and writer worth knowing in Japan. Zappa & the mothers used to stay at a friend's place when they were in New Haven. (I hope Zappa never schmoozed with Gene!!) I myself have conversed with Cornelius Castoriadis, saw Derrida with my own eyes, cooked for Yoshimoto Banana etc. etc. -----Added 31/7/2008 at 04 : 50 : 30----- Who? I am fairly certain I can get to W. in two degrees so that gets me to dlish, in a round about way. Of course, I know dlish here so that's just one.

One other one. Oscar De La Hoya was my neighbor back in '92. The mailman told us he lived there, and we got his autograph. That summer, I was away with family in Mexico, and at that time, my friends were hanging with Oscar's family, shooting pool in the garage and swimming in the pool in the backyard. They've moved out of there ages ago, but the front gate still says, 'De La Hoya'.

wow.. this thread took a while to kick off..but i go for a vacation for a few days and i come to this.. gee whiz!
sticky you are right - 3 degrees. intersting to see how we are all connected within a few people, although we are 'relative strangers'... sounds like an oximoron but we are all strangers who happen to be related in one way or other. whether in 6 degrees of not. spindles - i know hazem el masri who plays for the canturbury bulldogs (then again which lebanese person in sydney doesnt) who would know know all the current rugby league players who would know all the current union players..so theres probably 3 or 4 degrees between u and i. 777 - i used to do a bit of boxing when i was younger. i used to train with Hussein HUssein who challeneged for the world title 2-3 years ago who still is vic darchinyans training partner who both met oscar da la hoya personally as well as muhammad ali and mike tyson jazz - i met linford christie once but he was a total c*cksucker..so im sure we're only a degree or two in the athletics world. for thosetaht are interested heres an article i read today confiorming the theory on the 6 degrees of seperation.. BBC NEWS | Technology | Study revives six degrees theory Quote:
