How does having hay fever affect you being able to fly? I'm confused.

Ft. Dix, NJ - Air Base Ground Defense Training (Air Force had no combat training at the time so the Army had to do it for us - they didn't know how to treat us since we weren't Army, hilarity ensued)

That's a new one for me ..... being rejected for Hay Fever. I would still feel good about avionics though.... You can build all the airframes, engines, and flight controls you want, and then assemble them. But, if you don't have a good set of avionics to tie everything together, that ship ain't gonna fly.

I spent 12 years as a general mechanic... and I always had a deep respect for our "wire chasers". I can read a wiring schematic, and about half the time make sense out of it, as long as I understand the systems on that particular ship... but it takes a lot of patience and attention to detail to work that side of aviation maintenance. When a general mechanic works on a component such as an engine, rotors, or what not...it is easy to see the progress he/she is making. But in avionics so much of it is hidden behind everything else.

While I worked for DynCorp AeroSpace, we trained a team of mechanics as well as their pilots from the Royal Netherlands Air Force. They purchased a fleet of Apache Helicopters, and went through the same training at Ft.Hood that the US Military sent their aviation battalions through.

Good luck !

I have never served but the important men in my life have:

Dad: Enlisted, Navy; WWII. Bombardier in the Pacific in a makeshift civilian aircraft. Shot down three times; spent last six months of war in a psych hospital for "battle fatigue."

First Husband: Drafted, Army, 101st Airborne; Viet Nam. Ground pounder on point for the incursion of Cambodia. Untreated PTSD sent me running from that marriage.

Current Husband: Volunteered for the Navy on a bet with drunken buddies and was the only one accepted; Electronics Engineer E-5, but two or three Captain's mast's for being insubordinant with his immediate officer. Honorable Discharge. Claims to secondary fame: His ship picked up John Glenn (USS Noah); he calculated and strung a communication line for sending an SOS after his ship's upper deck was taken out by a hurricane; and he decoded and delivered the CoC's (JFK) message to his captain to meet the Soviet fleet and prevent their arrival to Cuba.

Overall, not bad for a nonconformist sob.

good luck! even if you had your heart set on flying rotary wing, i think you got a good backup plan. i've had some contact with RAF officers, they're all top-notch... no one i'd rather go to war with more than you Brits.

Yeah, I was too! They didn't specify exactly why I couldn't, they said I could re-apply in 2008 if my symptoms were gone! I guess it's because I'd have the mask on and I might be a bit too 'sniffely'. Not that you get much pollen at 15000ft...

None of you probably remember me, but I stopped posting here about six months ago. I still came back every once in a while to read, but haven't felt compelled to post until now.

After having done absolutely fuck all with my life for the past two years, I decided to enlist in the USMC. I'll be going to the MCRD at San Diego on December 12th. Hopefully in March I'll be able to be proud to have earned the title of Marine.

My chosen MOS is 0300, which is Infantry. I haven't gotten a lot of encouragement for my choice, but it is something that I feel I have to prove to myself.
