Bees Swarm Highway After Tractor-Trailer Wrecks ------------------------------------------------------------------- CLAYCOMO, Mo. -- Crews are cleaning up bees Monday after millions of honeybees spilled onto a highway after a wreck. The accident happened Sunday at Interstate 435 and Interstate 35 north when a tractor-trailer carrying more than 500 beehives, which carry thousands of bees each, flipped on its side. The cargo spilled all over the highway, forcing crews to shut down an off ramp for a time. Residents who live in the area said that they will be glad when the bees are gone. "It just makes you nervous seeing that many bees in one area. I have two little ones and they are in the house right now and not allowed to come out," a woman told KMBC. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt. KMBC reported that he was taking the bees to Wisconsin to help pollinate cranberry bogs. ------------------------------------------------------------------- at least no one was hurt

The farmer gets his crop fertilized, the bee keeper gets honey. It's documented in an article in the National Geographic magazine about 5 to 8 years ago. Loading the truck and placing the hive boxes is no biggie, really. These people know how to handle bees. Apparently, it's not all that tough. There are procedures which make the bees allow it. According to the article, their main goal is to remain obscure. Incidents like this are exactly what they like to avoid. As has been said here, bees creep some people out. Personally, I'd rather have bees than wasps and similar. Bees, at least, have a use for humans. Wasps are just annoying at best. |

The magazine article I mentioned showed a previous accident like this, where a car cut the truck off. The truck tipped over and the bees which survived went to an overpass. The overpass was just COATED with bees. They ended up using flame throwers on them. I guess you can't get 'em back into hive boxes which don't exist any more. |
