I'm contemplating going back to school for a degree in Business - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I already have a double degree in Communications/Sociology but its hell finding a job and I realize I like helping people alot...but I need money too lol

I was focused on the Sociology part of my degree. Half way into my Comm degree * I was going to do Radio and TV* I decided I didn't want to do that and I wanted to focus on helping people so I did sociology at the same time. Unfortunately for me, it's hard as hell for me to get a job in the field. So yea. Well my brother did accounting and he's making like 65k a year working for Quest Diagonistics. Seems good however I don't want to completely follow in his footsteps I want to make my own path so I'm lookin at different aspects of business. Business Administration apparently isn't in super high demand like other concentrations of Business. So is it safe to assume that Finance/Economics/International Business/Marketing are the ways to go?

What are some colleges in NJ with good Business schools? So far I'm looking at:
William Paterson University
Montclair State University
Ramapo College
Rider University.
Rutgers University

William Paterson has the E TRADE center. The creator of E Trade graduated from there and now they have like a stock market room or something of that nature. They have an entire area that was recently built dedicated to the business program.

Montclair State University, rated by Princeton Review as having one of the best business schools. My brother graduated from there with a degree in accounting

Ramapo College and Rider University I don't know much about. If I go to WP or Montclair I wouldn't be able to dorm because its so close to me *5min drive to Montclair and 15 min drive to WP* and I would REALLY like to dorm...but I know money is an issue.

Rutgers I dont know much about either but I know its a good school as well.
So yea, what do you guys know of any good NJ business schools

Take this from a BSBA and MBA grad....

Unless you want a career in Accounting/Finance don't bother. I've hired many a person with a liberal arts degree in regular business positions.

Also, with your Comm degree you have an opening to chase MarCom positions in my opinion. Take a look at the public relations firms or advertising firms....

Do you want to be an accountant? Do you want to be a loan officer? If so, then you should focus on schools with these fields that have good placement rates of their grads.

The real question is: what do you actually want to do? As Kryptoni alluded, the degree matters much less than the person who owns it. I know history and English majors making multiples of what your brother makes in insurance and advertising. Unless you need specific training in a certain field, like accounting, then you may be qualified for it now.

I think you need to figure out where it is you want to go before you start plotting out your path.

I may not get the following quote right... its been along time since my BS graduation...

Anyway, I remember the Dean of the College explaining at the ceremony that as a Bachelor degree holder we have shown society we can LEARN and as a Master degree holder we are PROFICIENT.

The point I remember is that a Bachelor degree is just a ticket to a professional career not a license. I know many people with hardcore engineering degrees that are now executives at business to business service organizations.

The point is just a The_Jazz states, it doesn't really matter what the degree major was UNLESS you want a TRADE (i.e. Accounting = CPA).

If you want to help people and make $$. Be a Entrepreneur! Start your own business that helps people and make as much money as you want...

I guess part of the problem is I honestly dont know what I wanna do with myself. However with my current degree I dont feel like I have any options. I feel completely loss in the world and such. I feel as though with a degree in business with a specific concentration I would be more attractive to perspective employers. I'm 22 years old and just lost in the world as of now. So many of my friends feel the same way...hum

Getting another degree won't give you direction, even if it may open more doors. It sounds more like your issue is direction, not employability. You should figure out what it is you really want to do, and then move in that direction.

I have degrees in History and Russian and Eastern European Studies. There's a member here who at least has a Masters in History and most likely a doctorate.

I'm an insurance broker, and he's a musician.

Unless the person really impressed me, I'd NEVER hire someone who majored in insurance or risk management. I have and always will give first look to liberal arts majors since they have to learn how to think and write. In my company, the top 3 producers (no, I'm not one of them) majored in Criminal Justice, Aeronautical Engineering and English for their undergrad. Not one has gone to any grad school. There another very big producer for us that still has her social workers license.

If you want to work in "business", go do it. Don't apply for a job that requires certification. Honestly, that's exactly what I did, along with at least half my friends from college.

I'm trying to figure out what I wanna go to school for as well. seems like all the big money jobs are the ones that help business stay in business. sales execs and the like...

ho hum. and here I am just wanting to peter away my time on music.
