The sad state of affairs (and having worked in tech support for most of my adult life, and now working for a company that specializes in content filtering) is that the VAST majority of the population is horribly inept when it comes to even the basic operation of their computers.
From my personal experience the worst offenders are usually involved in education. Computers have been forced down most teachers throats and very few have any idea how to utilize them at all, even when they are essential to the job. She probably HAD to have access to the computer simply to record attendance, which is most likely tied directly to the teachers login credentials (thus the adamant warnings not to shut it down). The sad truth of the matter is that most of our educational facilities are grossly underfunded and IT is still seen as an afterthought in many of the school districts across the country. The consequence is that any sane administrator with any real expertise or talent does NOT stay in education for long simply because they can be paid so much better at any number of companies that are competing for their skill sets. This case is general is a complete joke, and not to abuse that poor teacher but I've seen first hand that people simply ARE that stupid when it comes to the technology in their worlds, I sincerely hope that they prevent her being turned into a scapegoat for others complete ineptitude.

I don't. Having worked for the government, as well ass ":the best of the best" in the intel field. I can say this is the kind of knee jerk stupidity that runs rampant in this country. Plus, this is just one more case of "OMG, think of the KIDS" bullshit that has people signing over their civil rights with a fucking smile. Just once I want to see someone come out and say "Fuck your kids, think of my rights".

I remember back in the mid to late 90's when I shared an email address with my wife. She went nuts when she saw all of the porn spam I received every day in my email box. She didn't believe me that I didn't visit the sites and ask for the email like the message said.
It wasn't until later in the year when I setup a account just for her on hotmail and within 2 weeks here account was stuffed with spam porn that she finally believed me....

NECRO BUMP! In case anyone was curious, it seems that Julie Amero has cut herself a deal to avoid the most serious consequences of this absurd little fiasco. $1k fine and losing her teaching credential are certainly far better than the jail time nonsense she was facing, but it still seems like a horrible miscarriage of justice.

Just a question: what was she thinking leaving a group of middle school students alone without adult supervision? That in itself seems to me to be enough to justify her ultimate punishment.

7th grade?
It's not unusual at all for a teacher to step out of the classroom for a bit. These are 7th graders, not 1st graders. I can't even tell you how many times I was in a classroom without teacher supervision for a brief period of time in jr high. The worst that ever happened was we got louder.
