v-day sex in the city
I am thinking about getting the GF the first season of sex in the city on DVD. since Im a student, these are a little pricy for me.
my question: would it be bad to get her a used copy from a pawnshop? i was thinking of also getting her something cheap and practical as well. but if i had to get a new copy of the DVD, it would just be that. |

Simply answering a question with a question:
What is the GF's views on Pawn Shops? If she thinks they are scummy and only low-life's ever go in there, then there you have your answer. If she goes in them to get deals herself, then there is your answer. If she has no opinion on the matter, then I don't know what to tell you. If the DVD's are in excellent shape, I see no reason why not. Having said that, it is not me who you are trying to impress.

is that a new show or something??
I thought it was Sex AND the City sorry.. .. I don't see it would be a problem, just don't tell her it came from a pawn shop. If you're strapped for cash she should understand that.. after all Valentines day isn't supposed to be about how much you spend on her.. it's about being with her. Or something like that. |

As a girl. I LOVE it when somebody finds a deal, even when it's for me. Really it sometimes takes more effort to find a good deal than it does to just walk in, buy something off the shelf and pay full price for it. To me it's the effort that matters most I think.
I personally will shop at the thrift stores in town before I'll go to the retail for a lot of stuff. We haven't got a pawn shop that I know of but I'd go to one of those as well. Only thing I won't buy used is underclothing. Jackets, shoes (unless they're dingy sneakers), household stuff and books or tapes/CD's are fair game.

She really wouldn't have to know and this is how you do the 'trick'...
First of all make sure that she wouldn't want to return it. Then, since it will already be opened or have cheaper wrap on it don't wrap it or give her the box. Have the first disc in the DVD player. Then just say that you want to watch a movie. Push play and surprise it's Sex and the City. Then you can give her a kiss and all is done. I typically don't ask where my gifts come from and she probably won't either. Then she'll also think that you spent the $60+ on the gift. Deceitful, probably, but she'll be happy, you'll be happy, and no one will be the wiser. You aren't lying just leaving out details. Plus, it's the thought that counts, not the price. Good luck.

My millionaire father gave my wife some CDs that he burnt himself for her birthday. She was more impressed with the fact that he'd remembered what she'd been saying about the kind of music she liked and that she'd been searching for some particular CDs for ages without success than she was taken aback by the fact he didn't buy them new. She made a couple of harmless jokes about it, but she was quite chuffed at the thoughtfulness of the gift.
