the main thing that drives me nuts is the "macho man" attitude a lot of guys get over the internet, when in real life, they can't back it up. I hate how people act on the Internet - especially when it comes to insulting. If someone gets mad at you, they just cuss you out on the internet, with no repercussions. Pretty annoying. The maturity level in humans drops by 500% when they get in front of a monitor. That's why I'm at the TFP. You will get shit on by the mods if you act like a jack ass.

I am going to have to agree with just about everything already posted in this thread. But I would also like to emphasize that I too suffer from lack of body language being expressed online. My Hubby just the other day laughed at me because I was shrugging my shoulders while having an online convo, which made me notice how often I still use my body language while typing. Shaking my head, laughing out loud...I'm sorry but lol had lost all it's luster and meaning and I only use it when I can't figure out something better to say or to appease a family member who doesn't know any better.

I have to add that it drives me CRAZY to get IM's from my cousins, who are normally very smart in person, full of the craziest spelling I have EVER seen. I get im's with 3=e 1= can equal L I but horribly placed in a word where neither of those letters were even supposed to be placed.

When I first started here I was called out on an excessive use of "..." but for me, that's just representative of my own pause in thinking before typing, and that same wasted 2 seconds it took to read it, you would have had to deal with silence as I thought about how to phrase what was said next. I try to type like I talk, which shows most of the time. Kinda is a word I use frequently in person and therefore I use it online too, it's not proper grammer, but it's how I speak. Same with gonna, which I am gonna keep using, but hopefully it won't discredit that I am not a below average thinker because I use made up words.

I hate that when I get passionate about a response for various reasons and make a comment in such a way as to try to express that passion, it just isn't possible. People already have a vague idea of who you are and it seems online it's much easier to assume someone is being an ass instead of someone who is doing their best to participate in a conversatoin (which I suffer from the same profiling of people sometimes), but is coming off differently then they intended because of other people's preconceptions. That was a mouthful...hope you understand what I'm getting at.

One more thing I hate is that my opinions don't always include big words or seemingly highly educated responses and therefore there are times where I won't even bother to respond to a thread because I don't want to be ignored or called on something beacause I don't know how to express what I'm trying to say very well. That's not to say I actually would be, but that's how I get to feeling. Where as if we would have been face to face I would have been glad to say something without fear of sounding dumb, because I would be able to better express myself with all those things already posted that just aren't conveyed online such as body language.

I have to also say that it bothers me to have people complain about certain things without even acknowledging or knowing they suffer from the very same problem...But that's just me!

What drives me nuts? well it's a short trip to nutsville for me- so it doesn't take much...

1. People who feel the need to nitpick grammar or spelling in chat/IM... gimme a break people, it's one thing to be a 15 year old and talk in Leetspeak but typos happen -- get over it... no one has perfect grammar or spelling.
2. People who nitpick use of some shortened forms of words-- like hashbrowns, in chat I will say gonna, or hafta or kinda- i talk like that - unless I'm in a proper business meeting, i wouldn't never say i'm going to go to this - I would say I'm gonna do this - is it proper grammar? no. do i care? No... I'd call it comfortable speak.
3. People who get pissy when i don't use capital letters - I'm generally typing fast... and i can type faster without the use of the caps key -- or punctuation... did you miss my point by not having me punctuate? No - didn't think so - get over it.
4. My sense of humor does not translate at all into chat or IM - I'm a smart ass, and a wise acre... smilies don't help -- facial expressions do...
5. Blowhards... I come across waaaay too many of those...
6. It bears repeating because it just happened not 5 minutes ago - random stranger comes up on AIM - now my AIM name is the first letter of my first name and my last name - it's not anything cute like DizzyBlonde or SexyMomma or whatever - it's professional, my profile is professional as well - -well except the part where i say I enjoy tormenting little boys who ASL me... I guess that's seen as a challenge Five sentences in to chatting- i was asked for a picture (nope no can do) or what do I look l ike (I could tell you, but I can promise you wouldn't like the response) and well clearly MachoManxyz123abc only chats with pretty people (I saw his profile pic - it's good to think you could get a pretty person...

there are a few people I enjoy chatting with - I like it for customers because it saves a phone call - and I can usually take a few moments to give an answer - but to just jump on random people - I still maintain that it's rude...

I HATE those random PMs. I changed my profile from 28/f/Sweden to 56/m/Small former Soviet Republic and that got rid of most of them.

I am a twenty-something who is fifty years after his time. As such, I find the whole medium sort of lackluster. Until recently I actually did my best to avoid online chatting; it was only when I was in a long-distance relationship that it became a viable option. Since that's not likely to happen again, it really becomes superfluous now.

While I wouldn't give up the friends I've made online, I don't particularly like it as a form of communication and will, where possible, go out of my way to avoid it. I've been known to call friends who IM me, just so I can talk to them instead of chatting and I'm notorious for not sending txt messages, it's a wasted feature on my cell (which I only have in the first place because between the long distance plan and the discount Bell gives me on my phone and internet service, it works out to be cheaper to have one and not use it than not have it at all).

Specific complaints have been covered. My grammar isn't the best out there when I'm online, as I tend to fire off messages somewhat quickly; I also have a bad habit of unintentionally substituting hominems (ie 'you're' instead of 'your', 'their' instead of 'there'). So I am by no means perfect in my online communication; however, I do try to maintain a certain minimum level of spelling and grammar in my writing; I firmly believe that failing to do so implies a lack of respect.

Also, a/s/l. The whole concept needs to die. If you want to know who I am, ask me questions and get to know me. Being that most of my online handles convey a certain amount of masculinity, the instances I face that sort of AOL-ism are thankfully quite rare, but I still see it from time to time.

Most of y'all won't fall into this category- but I seem to be a prime target... those delusional early 20 something boys who seem to think that women of a certain age have nothihg better to do with their time than wait for these boys to IM them so they can run off some where and 'hook up'... Oh whatever...

Mrs Robinson was a movie I don't wish to be a part of...

while I hate "internet shorthand" I also hate the spelling and grammar complainers. I flunked grammer....(and yes I use .... as pauses in my thinking too). Seems "some" of the more rigid spelling, grammar people dont seem to remember that even dyslexics have a right to use message boards too and that NO spell check doesnt alway catch either mistakes.

make a reasonable effort to type the word correctly, and not in all caps and I'm fine, oh and dOnT tYpE lIkE tHis hOw CaN yOu sTaNd hOw LoNg iT tAkEs tO gEt OnE sEnTaNcE tYpEd?

I don't think I have anything more to add, you guys covered everything pretty well. I want to shut down my msn just thinking about everything said
